Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1985 volume:

“One day in 1709, there appeared in the London coffee houses a single news sheet called The Tatler, which bore the motto ‘Whatever men do is the subject of this book.' ” This yearbook is the students' interpretation of the year of 1985 at Emmaus High School. We hope that our goal of capturing the memories of all of the students was successfully accomplished. Throughout the year pictures were taken, copy was written, layouts were designed and deadlines were met. Difficult to Endure ... Sweet to Remember was chosen as the theme because we believe that this phrase ac- curately describes the ups and downs of our high school years. Much gratitude is given to Mrs. Larmer, whose experience and dedication has resulted in many outstanding Tattlers. Besides being seen at all the football games, pep rallies, and the Emmaus Halloween Parade, the band did well in many competitions. The show performed by the band consisted of “Topaz” as arranged by Jay Bocook, “5 times 8” by Mr. Gross, “Rainmaker” a Hal David hit, and “A Festival Prelude” plus a lot of fancy marching and equipment work. The band’s hard work showed when they placed first in Group III at the Whitehall “Music in Motion” Competition, placed first in Group III at a com- petition at Catasaqua High School, and participated in a competition at Westchester University. The band also hosted their own competition this year — the first of many Tournaments of Champions. To top off the mar- ching season they were awarded first place in Group III and the Chapter II Tournament of Bands competition which allowed them to represent Emmaus High School at Atlantic Coast Championships in Longhorn, Pa., where our outstanding percussion section placed second overall. dCet the (1h eerS l Qoar! The highlight of the band season was a trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, April 24-28, where a competition in a music festival with fourteen other groups from Penn- sylvania, Maryland, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Georgia, was held. Upon their return to Emmaus the Mayor, Luke Loeb, issued a proclamation and citation for the outstanding achievements of the EHS Band in Myrtle Beach. These achievements included: First place Marching Band and Parade Band and Best Overall Band in both these areas a Good rating in Concert Band, and an Excellent rating in Esquires (Jazz Band) with a public recognition of Sue Kohler for her outstanding solo perfor- mance on the alto-saxophone. The Squires Indoor Col- orguard received a Superior rating along with both the Drum Major and Drum Majorette who received Superior in both Field and Parade competitions. The bandfront was awarded First Place Superior rating and Best Overall for their Field and Parade performances. Mrs. Joann Harak Mrs. Sharon Glassman Mrs. Lucia Harmon Is it a machine that is turned on at 7:45 a.m. with a smile pasted to the face, where it remains till 2:30 when it is put into a closet? Not really. Teachers are people with feelings too. They have good and bad days, and they don’t always smile. They actually go home to do things other than teach. They play with their kids, coach football, paint their houses, play Trivial Pursuit, mow their lawns or just enjoy being with their husband or wife. Mrs. Virginia Huber Mrs. Colletta Krebs Mrs. Nancy Kresslcy EVERY TEACHER dreams of ihc ideal student walking into his classroom some day. What's the ideal student like? According to our teachers he's pleasant, courteous, self-disciplined, responsible, curious and eager to learn. Even those of us who snap gum, hang outside the hall until the bell rings, and do our heaviest studying at the drive-ins remain promising to Mrs. Beccham who commented, “He is someone who does their best and does it cheerfully. Maybe not. But teachers still have vi- sions of their own heroes. These heroes range from James Bond and Indiana Jones to their own fathers. Suprisingly, many of our teachers think of their former teachers as special people, worthy of admiration. Many look up to sports stars, such as Dan Marino (who can “perform under pressure”) and Mitch Gaylord (“because he’s cute and gut- sy”). Baby Fae was mentioned by Mrs. Meyers, because she feels “she brought everyone together, if only for a short time.” Mr. Himmelberger believes a hero is anyone who faces what life deals them and handles it. Many advised them always to do their best, while others suggested that they take advantage of all their opportunities and enjoy life while they could. Mrs. Barilla recommended that you “be yourself, not what others want you to be. “Be happy and find something that you enjoy doing. Enjoying your work is the key to happiness,” proposed Mr. Morgan. Mr. Himmelberger urged seniors to stay alert, keep an open mind and approach life with a positive attitude. “You deserve all that you work for; don’t settle for less,” advised Mr. Sthare. Mrs. Beecham advised us to remember the words of the song “Come alas like our youth too soon! — and don't waste a minute!! “I truly believe that one’s most salable item is a good attitude. I think a good attitude will get a person further in life than anything else, encouraged Mr. Sthare. In other words — GO FOR IT!!! 75 “Mom, I was caught again. In prepara- tion for the local election, an assembly was held for all senior CAS students. Senator Guy Kratzer and Emmaus Borough Manager, Bruce Fosselman, came to express their views, which were later discussed in classes. The end result of all these activities was a school wide election, which was directed by Mr. Husser's senior CAS classes. The results coincided with the national election held on November 6, 1984. EHS Dances Break dancing? Where? If you attended one of the many dances of this year, you probably saw this kind of dancing. How can people actually spin on their heads? You may have also seen people just standing or sitting around, too afraid to try ANY kind of dancing. But there are those who are out just to have fun. 79 Homecoming ’84 The day before Thanksgiving — a very memorable day for EHS Students! As early as 7:00 AM, the Super Seniors lined up for their annual Senior Breakfast. At 1:00 the student body converged in the gym for a very rousing Pep Rally. The highlight of the day came when Karen Brown was crowned homecoming queen and Tim Moxey was chosen as the male with the sexiest legs. As night fell — freezing students gathered around a blazing bonfire cheering wildly in hopes of winning the next day's game. 80 81 Senior Class Play Murder! That was the theme of this year’s senior class play. “Rehearsal for Death.” The plot was about a theatrical group rehearsing a play about murder when real murders occurred. The leads were portrayed by Denise Herr, Melissa Harbison, and Bill Miltenbcrgcr. The action was fast paced and the overall effect was one of excitement and intrigue. 82 Spirit Week Everyone looked forward to Spirit Week which was held before Easter vacation at Emmaus High School. The students dressed up for Slob Day, Beach Day, and the Sixties Day. The most popular of those days was Beach Day, as everyone was anxious to wear shorts in anticipation of the warmer weather. One eager person was spotted carrying a surfboard. 83 SLAVE DAY Did you see some people looking and acting really funny this year? Well, that’s because they might have been raising money for a very worthwhile cause. The Key Club held it’s annual Slave Day Auction on February 13 this year, and the slaves dressed up on the 14th. The money that was raised was given to Spinabifida. A thousand dollars was raised for this organization. South Pacific This year’s Spring Musical was Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific. Mrs. Susan Smith directed it, while Mrs. Marlene Wolf was the choreographer. The performers did an outstanding job, and as a result the musical was a great success. The main characters were Ensign Nellie Forbush — Kandy Klcppinger, Emilie de Becque — Mike Kollar, Bloody Mary — Melisa Harbinson, Luther Billis — Jim Rohrbach, Liat — Karen Bucci, and Lt. Joe Cable — Raymond Miller. 86 87 Germany During the summer, thirteen students from Emmaus High School traveled to Bad- Diirkheim. West Germany. For three weeks these students stayed with host families and observed their customs. During their visit, the students had the opportunity to see parts of France, Austria, and many towns in Germany. The highlight of the trip was the tour of Bavaria. While in Bavaria, the students visited Munic, Rothenburg, and two of King Ludwig’s castles, Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. Actually the boys' did better than their record indicates; of their 5 losses 3 were decided in the last event. Senior Earl Radkc led the distance runners this year and placed third in the League meet. Tim Moxey placed first in the pole vault at Leagues to wrap up an undefeated season in league competition. Juniors Jason Godusky (javelin) and Barry Roche (high jump) also captured golds at Leagues and went on to do well at Districts. Jason placed first, Barry second, while qualifying to compete in the stale meet at Shippensburg. The return of Jason and Barry in addition to many other talented underclassmen gives a brighter look for next year’s team. 121 Girls Track The Emmaus High School Girls Track Team enjoyed an outstanding season with a record of 9-1. Their only loss against Easton, occurred due to a technicality. The rest of the season proved that hard work and dedication pay off. The girls also won the League in the team competition, and did extremely well in the district competition. Ten people from the team were able to progress from districts to the grueling state meet, which was held at Shippensburg. Overall an enjoyable season was had by everyone. Ron 1: Kathy Kunklc. Although the girls anticipated a wonderful season it did not quite end that way. Despite their record they had an exciting year, and the team is only losing five seniors and therefore, expects an excellent year in 1986. Senior Karen Godtfring and freshman Jennifer Hansher represented the team in the All League conference game. Also, Mel Lutz and Kris Snyder represented the team in the first conference league. With many of these impressive girls returning, the team has hopes of going to the district playoffs in 1986. — 7 JF' Ron I: Lisa Shade. Melanie Lutz. Penny Frederick. CLUBS Emmaus High School offers a wide range of clubs for students to become involved in. These clubs consist of musical clubs, athletic clubs, academic clubs, language clubs, career-oriented clubs, as well as other various organizations including the very important Key Club. In the area of music there are many organizations in which a student can participate. These include the Esquires, the student jazz band, the Choir, for the vocally talented, and the Ensemble. These groups provide a means for Em- maus High School students to display their talents through competitions and concerts. The two main athletic clubs available to a student are the Marine Fitness Team and the student trainers. The Fitness teams compete against other teams in sit-ups, pull-ups, running, and broad jump. The student trainers con- sist of students who learn how to treat minor sports-related injuries. The students then help out at athletic events. A large number of the clubs at Emmaus are foreign language clubs. This includes the French, Spanish, German, and Latin clubs. Throughout the year club members are busy selling various items in order to raise funds for trips to New York (French Club) or Toga parties (Latin Club). Emmaus High School also has many fine academic clubs to choose from. Both the National Honor Society and the Scholastic Scrimmage Team provide an intellectual base for the academically gifted student. The National Honor Society provides a valuable service by volunteering their time to tutor fellow Emmaus students. The Scholastic Scrimmage Team competes against area high schools in school related contests. In the area of career oriented clubs there are the Future Homemakers of America and The Future Secretaries of America — both these clubs help teach skills to be used later in life. Last, but certainly not least, is the Key Club. The Key Club provides much valuable community service. This year the Key Club raised $1,000.00 from the popular slave day. The Key Club also aided greatly in the Special Olym- pics competition held at our high school track. Thanks to the many clubs available to Emmaus High Schools students were able to become involved in exciting, beneficial, extracurricular activities. National Honor Society Ro I: S. Mosley, L.
