On the hockey field, in the gym, on the tennis courts. We play with St. Agnes, Albany Academy, and each other. VVC even exert ourselves to such strenuous pastimes as bridge and Chinese Checkers. But most of our playing is done on the athletic field. From autumn hockey to spring tennis there is always some sport available to keep us happy and healthy. This fall everyone came out immediately' for hockey to try out the new tunics and stayed there when their interest was aroused by the arrival of Mrs. Barry, an English hockey coach who certainly sltowed us nlazy monkeys" a thing or six about the game. Sage Kellas matches were played amid great excitement and much rivalry, and we also had scrimmage games with the Russell Sage girls who used our tield for practice. Soccer was a popular game in the fall and drew many of us to the field behind the science building. The soccer team beat the hockey team at soccer last fall, but lost in hockey, proving that each team was master of its own sport. The promise of winning a school blazer if we earn fifty points, according to the new point-scoring sy stem, spurred us all on to new heights. Un Field Day, the Purple team Cseniors and sophomoresj, appeared adorned with purple scartis and white chry santhemums, while the Greens Ciuniors and freshmenj, wore Tyrolean hats and great green mittens. The seniors did their best with hearty songs and cheers from the sidelines to spur their teams on, but in spite of it all, the juniors managed to take the honors in Bench Yvarmcrs, 'J-1 both hockey amz' soccer. Vac victisl That didn't lessen the great spirit with which we sang our team songs in the gym, however, and though we had to fix up the words to some of the songs for the Dinner, we had as much fun as ever , singing them. ln the winter term, the round robin tourna- - ment proved a very successful way of keeping Spring IS ,mt Around the Comer. up interest in basketball and taking care of all ' who wanted to play. The seniors, incidentally, redeemed themselves here, for our Senior III team won the tournament, and our class team downed the juniors. The varsity team beat Albany Academy , but wasn't able to play St. Agnes. Badminton is getting more and more popular every year. This year the state champs showed tts how to do it, and we tried OLII our tricky shots in three tournaments, all of which were won by Peter. 'I'ournaments were on in ping-pong, too, and we soon found out it wasn't the restful pastime we once imagined. Vile have the Athletic Association to thank for tlte sudden interest in this lively sport. Our annual dollars were pttt to use, and asa result, six lovely new ping-pong tables with all the necessary equipment appeared one day in the gym. It was a good investment --- they've been used continually ever since. Many thanks, A. A. The snow this winter was such that we spent more time conditioning skiis than using tltetn. However, we did have a little snow, and the ltill behind the intirmary proved to be a good one, especially for novices Cwhich is tnost of usj. Skating was more successful. We turned the little hollow by the tennis courts into a young lake and had several parties there. lighted with car lteadlights. ln fact we once went as far as to have victrola music from the gym porch and marsh- IUllll0XYS to be roasted. Formally and informally, music takes a leading role in our lite at school. "Formally" includes the three musical organizations in the school. All of us, regardless of our degree of vocal proficiency, go to Cltoral Class on VVednesdays and Fridays and do our best in three parts by various songs and anthems under Mr. Pickering's able leadership. We get quite expert by Commencement time, and it makes a really impressive performance when we all get going on Onward Ye Peoplex. The three glee clubs, Senior, Junior, and Freshmanf Sophomore, practice faitltfiully once a week and top it all off in .lune at the Musicale. Their members take tlte main parts in our musical performances such as Revels and the Junior Pageant. For our really professional voices, we have the choir, composed of' twenty-six of our most musical juniors and seniors with Higgy as president. Choir members were the ones who braved the cold the morning after Revels with red lanterns and many coats and scarfs. Their efforts were rewarded with cofliee and doughnuts in Northcroft after Love Came Dawn at Christmas Wakened tlte dorms. Phyl Massey broke all Spree Club traditions by being in the choir at the beginning of' the year, and, when Choo Train appeared in vestments in April, we realized that those happy Spree Club days were gone indeed. By way of' getting in on some really good music we go en masse to the chromatic concerts in Troy Music Hall. This year we heard two symphony orchestras, Cleveland and Rochester, a singer Gertrude Piuinger, and a pianist, Eugene List. Wie went to the Troy Town Hall series too, and saw the Ballet Caravan and the Eva .lesse Choir. CWill you ever forget the way they sang .S'ltadracl'fj But we don't have to go down to Troy for good music. Lester Taylor gave ns another program this year, and we were entranced by the personality as well as the music of' Phillipp Abbas, a cellist. Then we have our own little concerts in the living room after dinner, listening to the yictrola records of' Beethoven's Fifih or singing old favorites around the piano. Unce in a while the girls who study in the Emma Vliillard Conservatory let tts in on their talent in Sunday night programs. Cll1YI'Zll CIZISS. Wltat a relief! Since that amateur program last tall, do we think Major Bowes is outdated? No! No! A Thousand Times No! The Major was delighted to discover several new singers, dancers, and even a harmonica and a Xylophone player under Emma Will11rd's roof. The audience was so entranced with it all that no decision was reached as to who was the best. Vile only know that villain Bobby was hissed above all others. Wltat scenes our E. Other struggles in 14 Romantic Age and Sprig QI' Loral and Latly of' the Alanor Rosemary' resulted from an annoying parent or relative. In passing, we must mention the memorable Hallowe'en party in which every one turned dramatic, and in outfits composed of long red under- wear, shoeblacking, and other ltandy things, turned out Maria the Slyriapod, the Gold Dust twins, the Emma Willard football team and all. To add the element of terror Nliss Kellas made an impos- ing witch, and several stray dictators tried to stir up a Fascist revolt. Vl'e were saved by an umbrella and a fishline, however. ,.1 5.
