Mr Harry Iennrrrffs Crawford
Mr Crawford was born rn Emlenton January 19 1867 He was the son of Samuel
W and Jane C Truby Crawford Hrs father and mother lrkewrse were born rn Emlen
ton hrs father later became a proneer rrr the Gold frelds of Calrfornra However after
12 years rn the West he chose to return to Pennsylvanra where he became actrye as an
orl producer
Mr Crawford always recognwcd the responsrbrlrtres of good crtrzenshrp and had
a great rnterest rn the educatron of the younger gcneratrons In 1928 as a grft to thc
communrty he burlt the Emlenton School called the Elrzabeth Crawford Memorral
School rn memory of hrs father mother and wrfe
A trust fund was estahlrshed for the school the rncome of whrch rs used for thc
marntenance of the school later a crteterra was cqurpped from the same source
In 1939 the H J Lraw ford Scholarshrp Trust of S25 000 was establrshed for the
deservrng students from the hmlcnton drstrrct who wrshed to attend Grote Crty College
He was also the prrncrpal donor ot Crawford Hall at Grote Crty College whrch was
dedrcated rn hrs honor rn 1927 For many vears he was actrvely rnterested rn thc
college and served as yrce presrdent nd trustee
He was a member of the Irr t Presbyterran Church of Emlenton He was a
farthful attendant at Sunday School and Church a belrever rn sobrrety and hard work
Hrs wrfe the former Elrzabcth Hafele was born rn Foxburg Pennsylvanra Mrs
Crawford dred on July 30 1924 Mr Crawford was tb father of a son born December
19 1900 who dred rn rnfancy Elrzabeth Lourse wrfe ot Paul H Brery of O11 Crty rnd
Katherrne Jane wrfe of George A Br-eene of Emlenton
Mr Crawford was consrdered Emlenton s Number One Crtrzen He was respected
by everyone not only for hrs rmportancc rn the busrness world but also for the genurne
affectron he rnsprred rn the hearts of hrs fellow townsnren people of all ages and all
walks of lrfe
Hrs known phrlanthropres were many and generous but the generosrtres that
endeared hrm to the tow nsfolrc were the lrttle anonvmous gestures a doctor brll pard
or a loan to help a boy through corlege
Wrth the passrng of Mr Crawford the lrnk rs broken wrth the early davs when
thrs area was proneerrng rn the orl rndustry One of the foremost proneers of the orl
rndustry he began that work rn hrs youth pumprnsf orl wells rn thrs drstrrct for hrs
father
On May 17 1953 at the 011 Exposrtron held at Tulsa Oklahoma Mr Crawford was
awarded the srngular honor of berng named Proneer of Proneers of the orl rndustry
lhrs coveted award was the orl rndustry s trrbute to a man who had contrnuously de
voted three quarters of a century to the orl busrness
Mr Crawford drrected hrs tar flung rnterests from hrs offrce rn the Frrst Natronal
Bank at Emlenton where he could bc found oarlv at hrs desk takrng as much rnterest
rn the routrne of the bank s busrnr ss as rn the multr mrlllon dollar ventures hc helped
frnance Through the years Mr Crawford acqurred maJ0r Interests rn a number of other
banks rn Venango and surroundrng countres Hc also helped frnance rndustrres rn Orl
Crty and Meadyrlle Hrs orl rrrtercsts wcre more wrdespread coverrng the major orl
and gas producrng frelds of the nrtrc rr For a brret perrod he was the foreman of thc
South Penn Orl Lompanv leayrrrg to rcturn to the Emlenton Gas Company as managcr
and treasurer
He engaged rn the bankrng busrness at an early age He took chargc of the
Frrst Natronal Bank of Emlenton when Elmer E Sloan cashrer became serrously rll
He contrnued hrs servrces to thrs bank by becomrng drrector and presrdent The later
posrtron he held at the trme of hrs death 'Nor enrber 3 1953 He was rntluentral rn other
banks rn whrch he held hrgh po rtrons
The frnal trrbute to Mr Lraw ford has not been written nor can rt be as long as
there are such as we who ey cry dav corrscrously or unconscrously are encouraged to
a better way of lrfe becausc hrs rnflucnce has touched us

The Senlors were represented IH chorus other vocal groups orchestra
