That's our theme for the 1987-88 yearbook- Spartan- at ECHS. It has, indeed, been a year worth recording in this history book, and the staff of the Spartan is proud to present it to the students of Em- ery High. From the first day of school we have worked to capture the events of this year. It is our hope that you will pick this book up in the fu- ture, glance through it and remem- ber vividly the many things that took place at Emery High in the 1987-88 school year. Until then, “This Is It. Enjoy the book. You all made it pos- sible. We found out early about some policy changes. When you mess with the Spartans, you're messin' with fire Mr. Swinburne opens the school year with a welcome to the students Nothing is more important during the course of the school year than homecoming. That was certainly true at Emery High this year when a wide variety of activities were of- fered to compliment the onnuol football game and dance. The school celebrated '62 Day. Red White and Blue Day, Dl Day and Black and Gold Ddy. The assembly was held prior to the parade and featured a variety of entertain- ment. High Stakes Trivial Pursuit left many with egg on their faces. There was also a yelling contest and the Dating Game. Mike conducts the slave auction, above. At right, the faces of homecoming. If, during the course of the school year, you participated in the many activities such as Battle of the Classes, The Dating Game, home- coming, the dead bunny pep rally and others, then you took advan- tage of a student-council spon- sored event. Being a member of the student council means hard work. It involves a lot of planning and dedi- cation. This year's council members learned to work together, and they did it well. They tried to make activi- ties interesting and fun for every- one. Although most of the weekly meetings were less than serious, the council managed to put together a great year. During the summer the Spardettes at- tended a drill cdmp held at SUSC and brought home a first place trophy for their effort. The drills learned at camp gave drill mistresses Traci Jeffs, Holly Umphenour and Maxine Herzog ideas for performances during the school year. The Spardettes showed their school spirit by cheering and drilling at football and basket- ball games. They exhibited their courage when they per- formed at the state football game in sub-zero weather. At the Region 10 competition, they performed military, prop and jazz drills. I Clmtaadw 1 Emery High can be proud of its cheer- leaders. They worked everyday to learn new cheers and make posters to bring our school spirit alive. The cheerleaders attend- ed a USA Cheerleading Camp at SUSC in Cedar City. There they learned many new cheers and skits and received awards for their achievements. This year they brought back a spirit stick and superior and excellent ribbons. They performed at pep assemblies and cheered at all home games and matches — even in the bitter cold during football season. Front, left to right. Julie Stilson and Becca Cox. Next. Lorie Matson. The FFA helps young people develope leadership skills and responsibility. The Emery chapter competed in many contests this school year. Members also competed in areas like public speaking, proficiency awards and also in the state farmer category. Five members attended the national convention in Kansas City, Mo. Besides dealing with live- stock and crops, FFA members learn how to run a meeting and conduct business. Our chapter officers were led by a female president, Jennifer Anderson. It started in the 1982- 83 school year with a small member- ship of eight students. The club now has grown both in size as well as in its purpose. The club now has a mem- bership of 70 students and is one of the active clubs at ECHS. The primary purpose of the club is to promote the idea of Youth Help- ing Youth. The club does a lot of work in the area of trying to prevent the use and misuse of drugs and al- cohol by Emery County teenagers. These students, however, do not work only in this area; they also work in the area of relationships, depres- sion, stress, grades, suicide, and teenage pregnancy. The students are trained to be good listeners NOT junior counselors and for this reason they sometimes refer their friends to appropriate professionals. The teens do prepare and teach lessons about self-es- teem, choices, and they sponsor an alcohol and drug-free essay and poster contest, an alcohol and drug prevention week, an alcohol and drug-free graduation party, put on plays, talent shows, and numerous other events to encourage getting high on oneself. These students are trained by at- tending a three-day summer retreat in the mountains, by attending workshops and conferences around Utah and by special training sessions in the high school. PEER HELPERS This year the band started oft with a new instructor, Randy Orwin, and a large group of new sophomore students, and with a membership of well over 70 students this became quite a challenge. Between the jazz band, the symphonic band, the pep band, and the marching band a lot has been accomplished this year. These bands have entertained us at our homecoming parade, the Peach Days Parade, the annual Christmas concert, and at a number of various school sports and activi- ties. They also were invited to play at the Freedom Bowl in California, in Washington D.C.. at the Utah State Festival, and in the Durango Festival. Instructor Randy Orwin speaks at the Christmas Concert. Trombones patiently await their part, above Many Emery High School students took part in the traditional Lythgoe assembly. Those who participated fell into a deep hypnotic sleep. During this sleep Lythgoe gained control of his subjects' subconscious minds. During the day assembly he demon- strated the three levels of hypnosis, then during the night performance he demon- strated the ability to take his subjects back in time and also into the future. He also had each subject become the personality of his her favorite person. This year he helped our football players gain a positive state of mind for the upcoming games. This year, the juniors were returning champions, but the sophomores and seniors had other ideas. After competition in several relays, free-throw shooting, pop drinking, penny stacking, lip sync, hot-dog eating, and other fun-filled events, the seniors came out on top while the juniors were second and the sophomores fin- ished in third. Emery's J.V. football team had a great year by scoring 215 points to its opponent's 20. The Spartans were undefeated, beating Juab, North Sanpete, Delta, Richfield, Manti, South Sevier, and Millard, Making them the first Emery J.V. team to have a perfect sea- son. The JV's winning attitude is expected to carry over to the varsity program in the following years. The junior varsity is coached by Neal Peacock, Dean Nelson, and Tom Davis. Their goal was to make it into the 2A state volleyball tournament in Octo- ber. With a win over Richfield in the Region 10 tournament, the Lady Spartans did, indeed, earn a spot in the state meet. In the first round, Emery faced Morgan and lost a very tough match, two games to one. It ended the season for Emery, but the team won several big games along the way to the state tournament. Overall, Emery finished with a 4-18 record while the JV, un- der the direction of coach Nancy Martinez, finished with a 10-4 re- cord. They've touched our lives in many ways, and we leave this school at the end of the school year as better people because of what our teachers have given us.
