Memoral High School our Alma Mater
WE THA K YOU
When a student's life in general seems out of tune, when teachers pile on the home-
work, when a two o'clock assembly raises hopes for an early dismissal and those hopes
prove to be ill-founded, when new rules seem senseless and the old ones impossible,
upon whose shoulders is placed the blame? He who assumes the Herculean responsibility
of serving as a high school principal seemingly must accept, along with the myriad iobs
that are naturally a part of the office, that extra burden that we students, unthinkingly,
add. On the days when we see things clearly, then we are aware of the daily impor-
tance, in our lives, of the man who is never too busy to hear our problems, to give us
his good counsel, and to encourage us with his kind and warm smile.
The busiest man we probably will ever know is our superintendent. To be responsible for
a school plant as large as ours is no insignificant iob. Problems multiply when many
diverse groups have interests in the welfare of an organization. We feel very fortunate
to have a man who sees the needs of our school and does something about them
promptly and efficiently. As students we do not find his office as familiar as that of our
principal, but we are conscious of a sense of security in knowing that the superintendent's
office claims this genial and friendly person as its occupant.
As our youthful thoughtlessness begins to fade and an awareness of value and quality
begins to develop, we realize the need to express our honest gratitude to these two men.
May the dedication of the 1958 Timberlane serve as a long-merited thank-you to our
principal, W. V. Langen, who for years has helped us on our way to better citizenship,
and to our superintendent, W. J. Murphy, who has made it possible for us to attend the
very best of schools.

Our school board members whose daily lives
are busied in such diverse occupations as
mining, homemaking, clerking, and the selling
of insurance, meet once a month, sometimes
oftener, united in the common cause of good
schools. Because of their forethought and fore-
sight, because of their diligent planning and
careful managing, we students have had the
opportunities to enioy the best of educational
facilities.
Increasing enrollment necessitates an enlarged
plant. A new grade school and junior college
will be built to meet this need. These schools
will provide more of the outstanding educa-
tional opportunities which make better citizens
ot us all,
A hearty thank you is due this small group of
citizens, all of whom give of their time sa

talents- all done well.
Our class of '58 got off to an auspicious start as early as our Freshman year with a
lively initiation. In our Sophomore year, under the capable leadership of Robert Tom-
sich, we presented our first mock TV show. Everyone enioyed the show so much that we
presented one once again in our Junior year. With money no worry, we put on our
beautiful prom, with the theme of "Black Magic." This was followed by our successful
Junior - Senior
Banquet. The
energy and will-
ingness on the part of the class reflected our ambitious and energetic class president,
John Koivisto. As our last year approached, we decided to make it a memorable one.
Our always-active class put much spirit and enioyment into our Homecornings. Despite
the flu, our Senior Class Play, Moliere's The Doctor In Spite of Himself, was a huge suc-
cess. President Chernivec led us in busy preparation for our graduation. ln four short
years, we have
"chalked up" so
many memories,
friendships, and events, that each and everyone of us is proud to say, "VVe're the class
of '58."

The Timberwolves, hampered by a loss of seniors, had a team studded with sophomores
and iuniors, with only four seniors on the squad. Although they did not win a maiority
of their games, the flashy running of their slightly inexperienced backheld shows great
promise for next season. The team played well for the young material it had and gave
some of the tougher district teams a few scares. The highlight of the season was the
annual Homecoming game with Chisholm, which Ely won, 26 to 6.
Loushin starts oft around end as Smrekar prepares to throw a block for him,

Ely's Tankmen, in keeping with their tradition of being one of the top teams in the state,
took second place in district competiton, and tourth place at the state meet. Although
graduation hindered the team, and only two seniors were on the team, they went a long
way. Coach Klun should be given special credit for his coaching. The team rates high
every year. Next year, the squad should be a good contender for the state title, with
all the team returning except two.

Baseball, which is a comparatively young sport to Ely High School, has come into its
own. The team won most of its games in regular district play, but lost the first tournament
game to Mountain lron by a score of 3 to O, against a veteran pitcher. This coming
year should be "the year" for the baseball team, for all the regular veterans but three
will be returning, the pitching staft will be stronger than ever, and the bench will also
be strong,
Coach Dresciclw studies the situation while Elioft and Hillman wait on deck.
