Coach Brian Courtney. Elwood’s tennis record for the year is 1-9, not really a good indication of the team’s effort. Coach Brian Courtney commented, “With the exception of the Wabash and Taylor matches, we were in all the matches up to the end. We have not instilled the “killer instinct’’ in ourselves. We let a lot of matches get away because of this. I feel that working with junior high kids as I have tried should help strengthen the squad in the years to come.’ Thor Nordahl, exchange student from Norway, racked up an overall 8-2 record and 6-1 in the CIC. He won first round in the sectional defeating Alexandria 6-3, 6-2. He then downed Shenandoah 6-0, 6-0, and Pendleton Heights 6-4, before going down to defeat to Muncie North 6-2, 6-0. Including post season wins and losses, Thor’s total record was 11-3.

The Panthers tied the CIC with Alexandria, whom they beat earlier in the season with a score of 23-20. The varsity team also had an outstanding player in Ted Melvin. He rushed 1,217 yds. to become the second back in Elwood’s history to have back to back 1,000 yd. seasons. Ted was awarded UPI All-State Offense and AP All-County Defense. Ted, Todd Nance, and Eric Fettig were named to the All-Conference team. Six other Panther players made All-County. 29
