f' , - . Q' llmll 5 ' - - -li- I I ' u Q QA A Q 7 All gui' IS ff' Senior Class History Four years ago a bedraggled group of Freshmen entered Elwood High School. They certainly furnished entertainment for the Seniors. The very first period on-e awe-struck Freshie came into Miss Groswege's solid geom- etry class with an overshoe sticking out of each pocket and his cap in his hand. He managed to ask if that was the physical training class. No won- der the Seniors laughed, but they certainly humiliated those beginners. However, those Freshies had the one consolation that they would not always be looked down upon as the 'tdumb-bells. The first year was the longest but it finally passed, and they became Sophomores. Sophomores-how soothing and inspiring to be addressed in that man- ner. They had climbed one step in thg high school social ladder. The class was permitted to organize and to participate in the many activities of the school. The mid-year class selected Green and White as their class colors and Lily of the Valley for their flower. 'tRowing, 11ot drifting, was the motto they chose to guide their footsteps. The spring class colors were Rose and Silver and their flower was American Beauty Rose. The motto selected was Simplicity, Sincerity and Service. Another year had passed, they were Juniors, upper classmen. One more step had been climbed, the class was taking an active part in all affairs. It furnished athletes, honor students, and contributed to casts of plays given by the school. The main social event of the year was a Hallowe'en party given in the gymnasium. They were all looking forward with en- thusiasm to next Year. Seniors-they had gained that coveted rank. How dignified to belong to such a group. They knewe and knew that they knew. They won the class tourney and gave the greatest of all class plays. 1 The officers for this year of years were as follows: Louise Robbins, president, Ralph Majors, Secretary, Lawrence Alexander, treasurer. The spring class selected these: Willard Windle, president, Charles Snodgrass, secretary, Wilda Striker, treasurer. Of course, receptions and senior week are the happiest times of a Sen- ior's life. The mid-year class reception was given in tea-room style, a very excellent farewell was given by this talented group to the outgoing class. The spring class at its reception carried us back to spain, where the beautiful Senoritas, and Senors were seen in an old Spanish Garden. Who could be happier? Now they have attained their goal. Their school days are pastg they have come. into their own. No longer will the steps they take be guided by the helping hand of some faculty member. They must shift for themselves. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said, Lives of great men a.ll remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and in parting leave behind us footprints on the sands of time. If all have not left their footprints upon the sands of time, they have surely left them upon the steps of dear old El-Hi. ' Page Twenty-three

-YQ fl Seniors of '28 Oh Senior Class, like a galley ship of old Hast come the day To set thy sails and put out upon the sea, Thou canst not stay. HUOIIIQ7, Destiny beckons, Come sailors bold And win thy laurelsfl Skilled were the builders i11 Arts and Charact'ry Learned and Moral. Instilled in the heart ideals noble and true, From folly retire. Deliberate and haste not to accomplish Every desire, ' For in thy unmounted haste thou might undo This priceless gift. Guard well thc gem that it does not diminish But serve to lift. Blow gentle zephyrs, let thy hand guide on This unskilled crew -' Far from the Styyian watefs of Despair, And safely through t The overwhelming waves of -Disillusion Which dispel trust, Past flippant Pleasure's jagged coast bleak and bare, We you intrust. 'V Dawn is breaking in the East, expectantly, With repressed fear, Prepared to quit the sacred port, they go now Leaving friends dear. May the banner red and blue floating freely, In them impress Service, Sineerity, Simplicity, at its prow Lead to success. BERNARD SCHUCK Page Twenty-four '72 fl . -, i QSM W ggi? X28 F' Y. .-
