Hear ye! We here present the Class of I943-those dynamos of "June Mad" and candy selling, the juniors. Led ably by ulenksien and Wolfie," these little bun- dles of joy have come safely through their junior year - almost. Only mysterious pr om night is left for them to Ustrut their stuff." Cver-shadowed somewhat by senior limelight, these happy little people have gone joyous- ly on their merry way-waiting for their turn as 'thigh and mightiesu next year-the Class of '43. How well we remember their freshman year. The tortures of Timbuctoo were theirs. Taunted by experienced seniors, haughty juniors, and relieved sophomores, th ey sailed through with flying colors. Then, as happy-go-lucky sophomores, they were cheated out of their chance to tease. Be- cause of the banished freshman class, they still were regarded as Hour infinksf' Oh, woe unto them! But happy memories of this year are theirs. Remember their clever Spanish party, with Ferdinand, the Bull, and beautiful dancing ladies flying all about? And now, oh happy day, flanked by their captain-president, Karl Zieglerg private-vice- president, Thor Carlson: and messmate-secretary, .lo Ann White, they're marching through to another victory-the Class of '43, ll! crslucliCS The Class of 1943 'haw an ,- A-A. ku T55 Vw 4-... The Class of 1943 'CJ' 1 Q SOPHOMORE OFFICERS AND SPONSOR Judith Block Richard McAlpine Ruth Riks Mrs. Mann SCDPHCDMQRES We, the sophomores, being almost ready to pass on our name to our successors, the fresh- men, and inherit that cf our forerunners, the juniors, are very pleased with the future pros- pects, but it is with a certain feeling of regret that we look back on the things that we leave be- hind. Remember the highlight of our young but promising sophomore lives, the sophomore party, held at Camp Tenonetentwo? Remember the gym, completely transformed into an army camp, the demonstration of the efficient medical service provided at the camp, and the rendition of a ballet, given by sev- eral of our more talented male sophs? We chose Mr. Purvis and Mrs. Mann for our sponsors, but as Mr. Purvis was called to the service of his country. lVlrs. lVlann has carried on alone. lncidently, we sophomores think that we're the most loyal of the three classes. We elected Judith Bleek, president, Ruth Riks, vice-president, and Richard lVlcAlpine, secretary- a blonde and two red-heads, respectively, thus carrying out the school colors very nicely. This fact, however, was only a coincidence. We did not chose them to be our officers for that reason. We feel that as the underclassmen, we have not yet had a real opportunity to show our colors. We are looking forward to our junior year, when we are going to outdo ourselves and surpass our record as sophomores with an even better one as juniors. 29 "if 1. 1111 ,1 'Q B 1 4 ptl -an s.. LA PORTE With but a few minutes remaining in the game, victory was in sight for the Red Devils over their arch-rivals, Laporte, for the first time in four years. The Devils scored early in the first period on a series of power plays but failed to convert the extra point. ln the last few seconds remaining in the game, the diminutive but powerful left halfback. Dick Grenda, returned a kick 90-yarcls for a touchdown. Because Laporte failed to run the hall over the line for the extra point, the game ended in a 6-6 tie. This game was not only the last game of the l94l season, but it also completed Duane Purvis's coaching career at Isaac C. Elston Senior High. Athletic Association Every girl in high school is eligible to joint the G. A. A. This club is formed fm r the pur- pose of promoting good health and school spirit among all the girls in high School. At the beginning of each tournament season, the girls meet and elect a captain for each team. When this is done, the captains are given a number by which the team is identified. The captains then choose the girls for their teams, and the tournament begins. After every team has played every other team, the one winning the most games is declar- ed the winner, and each girl on the team is awarded an emblem at the award assembly. The same procedure is followed for each game of basketball, volleyball, baseball, hockey, 50 deck tennis, and soccer. However, new captains are chosen for each type ol game, and these captains choose new teams. The G. A. A. is run on the point-system. each girl receiving five points for every game in which she participates. This system encourages girls to take in many types of sport activities and attempts to interest girls in all-round development. Friendly competition induces fair play and gives each girl a sense of sportsmanship. The highest honor a girl can receive in the G. A. A. is the sweater award. At the end of the school season the girls vote for the girl who they think is the best athlete, and a sweater is given to the girl at the award assembly. Also, at the award assembly, the girls with the most points and the girls on the winning teams receive letters. 5Ht't'l'lli llll.XNll'5 lllpiwr lxil l1:1111l tw1l'111'1'If I,1'It In right 1-I. rum 5.11',1l1ylws1'pl1. The main feature of the Spring Festival was a patriotic number, i'The Ballad for Americans", presented in costume. Many of the Glee Club members took solo parts in the UBallad'l. At the state choral contest at Butler the Glee Club won a second division rating, while the Girls' Glee Club won a first division rating. We are rather proud of this record, as this is the first year the Glee Club has entered any contest of this kind. The officers of the Glee Club are June Mills, president, john Powell, vice-presidentg lVlary Kay Beall, secretary-treasurerg William Samuels and Janet lVlartz, alternate librarians. A CAPELLA CHCHR The a capella or robed choir is made up of members selected from the Glee Club on the basis of competition. It is a group of finely blended young voices, which does most of its sing- ing without accompaniment. This year the choir entered the state choral contest and received a first division rating. The choir has given several performances with the band and orchestra during the past year and has sung for the Woman's Study Club and P. T. A. The group also took part in a per- formance at the teachers' convention in South Bend last fall. 60 SENIOR ORCHESTRA s 'Inf 124'-ii'g1ilv .Xriwl-l. Ylrgunizi liqiirll. llvlty lit-ll.
