After getting off to a slow start, splitting their first six games, the Indians really got rolling winning 16 in a row, including tournament championships at Louisiana and Bowling Green. Following the regular season the Indian's advanced to the New Haven Class S Regional finals by defeating M.S.D. , Bell, and University High. However, Elsberry was defeated in the championship game by an unusually tough Clopton team , 58-46 . All District, Honorable Mention to All-State Forward Ron Robinson led Elsberry's attack with a 17 point average. Guards Mark Chaney and Joe Talbot followed with 15 and 13 point averages, while center Bill Pratt finished with a 12 points a game average. Chaney drives around a Wellsville player to score two more. 76 1972-73 VARSITY BASKETBALL STATISTICS FINAL OVERALL RECORD: 23-5 FINAL CONFERENCE RECORD: 12-2 NAME GAMES POINTS AVE. F.G. The EHS cheerleaders in action at Bowling Green. 79 Probably the closest thing EHS had to a state champion in the 1972 - 73 sports year was the Pep Club-Cheerleader organization. The Basketball team might take exception to that statement but it is doubtful that they would have had a 23-5 record this past sea- son were it not for the girls in red and white. Due largely to the untiring efforts of their sponsor, Miss Barbara James, the Elsberry Pep Club-Cheerleaders group is recognized by most as the best organization of its kind in Northeast Missouri. Elsberry had the good fortune this year to have eight strong and extremely agile cheerleaders and a large and tremendously vocal pep club. If this combination continues, Elsberry can look forward to another great basketball season next year. 80 FIRST ROW - Left to Right: R. Hartley, M. Lamb, T. Gray, S. Raney. SECOND ROW: J. Davis, W. INDIANS FINISH SECOND IN EMO CONFERENCE The baseball Indians once again tasted success in the 1972-73 baseball season. Elsberry ran up an impressive 9-2 overall mark, and an 8-2 conference record to finish second in the EMO Conference in the season. The opening game saw Elsberry bomb Winfield 12-0 in a non-conference contest Robinson got the victory hurling a no-hitter. The Indian's first EMO Conference games did not prove to be as easy as the opener however as Elsberry went down to defeat to Troy and Clopton by scores of 9-8 and 4-2. The Clopton game, proved to be the turning point in the Indian’s season as they won their last 8 ballgames, running up wins over Troy, Wright City, Clopton, and Silex , as well as taking Doubleheaders from Wellsville and Montgomery City. Mark Chaney and Tom Kelly were the two major reasons for the Indian's late season surge; pitching brilliantly, they accounted for 8 of the Indian’s 9 wins. Heavy rains and flood waters shortened practice sessions and the overall spring schedule. The Indi- ans never really got untracted from this lack of prac- tice and were eliminated in the second round of sub- district competition in the state tournament. ALL CONFERENCE PLAYERS, Left to Right - Tom Kelly, Tom McLeod , Mark Chaney 82 Phil Tiller stretches to take the throw from third baseman, Tom McLeod dur ing a spring baseball game. Some of the Indians get together and celebrate after Elsberry clinches second place in the EMO Conference. Tom Fakes prepares to warm up Elsberry's starting pitcher who is blocked from the camera’s view by Leon Pritchett. 83 Left to Right - Coach Wheeler , Gerald Fessler , Mike Davison, Dave Humphrey, Mark Rhoa- des , and Dennis Foster. DISAPPOINTING SEASON FOR CROSS COUNTRY TEAM A lack of interest in Cross County running nearly proved fatal to the sport at EHS in 1973, as few boys went out for the team and very little interest was paid to the team that was formed. This is really a shame since Cross Country is one of the most physically punishing sports at EHS. These athletes run countless miles each year and win or lose, they are torturing themselves for the fans and should be appreciated. Perhaps Mike Davison finishing in the top ten at the Conference Jun- ior Varsity Meet is a sign that next year will be more rewarding for Cross Country fans at EHS. 84 Left to Right, FIRST ROW: Coach Wheeler, Mike Davidson, Joe Talbot, Joe Miller, Mark Rhoades, Ken Reichard. SECOND ROW: Dennis Foster, Greg Smith, David Humphrey, Bill Pratt, Ronnie Robinson, Gerald Fessler. ELSBERRY TRACK TEAM TAKES FIRST AT DISTRICT Led by the speedy Joe Talbot, Elsberry's track heroes surprised a lot of people in 1973 as they fin- ished third in the EMO Conference Meet and captured first place at the District wars. Over the year, Talbot collected a total of 14 medals by starring in 4 events, the 100 , the 220 , the 440, and the broadjump. In addition, Joe received the Outstanding Track Award from EHS and was voted Outstanding Varsity Sprinter by the conference track coaches. Joe's performance in track this year played an essential role in his being named the Out- standing Athlete of the Year at Elsberry High School. But Joe wasn't the only track star Elsberry had in 1973. Also leading the team all season were Greg Awe in the polevault, highjump. and 220; Joe Mil- ler in the 120 high hurdles and the 180 low hurdles; Bill Pratt in the shot put and discus; Dave Humphrey in the high jump and the high and low hurdles; Ron Robinson in the polevault; and Greg Smith in the 440. 85 Left to Right - FIRST ROW: Steve Sharpe, Tom Kelly, Tom McLeod, Bruce Bowers, Chuck Reed, Conrad McMillan. SECOND ROW: Kerry Davis, Tom O’Brien, Dave Humphrey, Garry Day, Mark Chaney. RAIN DAMPENS GOLF SEASON A very wet spring and finally, a devastating flood shortened the golf season at Elsberry this year; how- ever , the Indians did take their clubs onto the greens long enough to arouse some interest in the sport. In the first annual EMO Conference Golf Meet, held at Troy , Elsberry took third place. Mark Chaney, the most experienced golfer on the Indians’ team had the lowest individual tally of the day. Hopefully, next season will be even more successful for the Ind- ians, but it must be remembered that four members of this year’s team were seniors and won't be returning. Tom Kelly all teed up and ready to go! 86 Left to Right - FIRST ROW: Gary Hagemeier. Tom Kelly, Mark Chaney, Tom McLeod. L e t t e r m e n c I u b Lettermen's Club Officers of 1972-73 - Left to Right: Tom Mc- Leod , Tom Kelly, Mark Chaney, and Gary Hagemeier. The Lettermen's Club, composed of boys who have received letters in any of the five major sports at EHS . once again grew in membership this year as athletic Indians continued to excell throughout the year. The main purpose of the club was to raise mon- ey to finance the letters, bars, and other sports awards given at EHS. This was done by obtaining employment at Forrest Keeling Nursery for Lettermen's Club members. 87 Left to Right - FIRST ROW: Debb Phillips. Hausgen. horseshoes. Neta was also named the Outstanding All- Around Athlete and V. McLeod was given the sportsmanship award. Winners of the Presidential Physical Fitness awards were W. Blair, N. Lagemann, D. Clark, M. Gilbert, J. Lamb, M. O'Brien, V. Shrum, K • Roam, S . Ross, and L. Shrum. With the great success of the Girls' Athletic Association this year . it looks as though girls' sports are here to stay at Elsberry and its about time. The dark ages theory that girls can't compete in sports is apparently well on its way out and the sports scene at EHS will become more attractive because of this. G.A.A.
