Not accepting the idea that education involves only memorization of facts and blessed with an ironic sense of humor, Mr. Almasi has of- ten stimulated students to delve below the artificial sur- faces of appearance and dig right down to the core of things. Clark Masumi Tanaka and Miriam Chible’ oe |i Bb tecees: coiteceoss ois Ae OUR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS This year the high school enjoyed the company of two foreign exchange students. We have enjoyed adding their names and talents to the growing list of students from around the world who have attended Elmwood. Miriam’s hometown is Coyhaique, Chile. Her host family in- cludes Susan Wilson and her parents, Gene and Shirley Wil- son. Her quiet dignity and sweet manner has endeared her to all of us. Masumi comes to us from Japan. Her host family for this year was the Opper family: Terry, Sheila, Anita, Brian and Jenny. Masumi added greatly to our school by participating both in volleyball and band. Her talents at the keyboard are something to hear! SENIORS EDITORS PHOTOGRAPHERS Lori Warner Jim Haines Karen McGuire Dawn Patton Dan Hulslander Stacey Polen | COUNTRY 12 Cindi Bennett, Sec’t; Lee Ales, Treasurer; Dale King, President; Kurt Christ, Vice President CLASS HISTORY In August of 1977, 68 timid freshmen set out on a new beginning. Our leaders at the foothills of our steep encounter were our president, Greg McCoy; our vice-president, Cheryl Crouch; secretary, Tammy Coulter; and our treasurer, Jim Haines. One of our first stumbling stones was initiation; however, we all survived. We received fourth place on our float, “Turks Last Leg”. Our stunt did not place. By the sophomore year of our climb, we had lost four classmates. To help pick up the pieces were our new president, Sharon Elliott; assisted by vice president, Cheryl Crouch; Secretary, Karen McGuire and treasurer, Tammy Pittman. We then discovered gold in the form of class rings. We started a small avalanche when our float ““We’re Expecting A Victory” took first place (an honor usually reserved for the senior class). Our stunt placed second. At the beginning of our junior year, our class had dwindled to 57 climbers. To lead us in this all-important year, we elected as president Sharon Elliott; Kevin Tompkins as vice president; Cindy Bennett as secretary and Lee Ales as treasurer. Again we conquered first place with our float, ““We’re Brewing Up A Victory.” Our stunt, as usual, didn’t place. In the spring of 1980 we presented a beautiful prom entitled, “We’ve Got Tonight.” In the fall of our senior year, 58 were reaching toward the top of the mountain with President Dale King, Vice President Kurt Christ; Secretary, Cindy Bennett and Treasurer Lee Ales in the lead. For our final efforts, our float, “A Whale Of A Victory”, placed second. Again, our stunt did not place. We all anxiously await our final conquest — graduation. For many of us the real climb has just begun, but the path we leave behind will long be remembered! | LEE E. More enthusiasm and spirit than ever before were shown be- tween the classes and faculty in the spirit competition. The contest began on Monday with “Sneak up behind them and sock it to ‘em” — Sock Day; Tuesday, “Let’s work up a Sweat” — Sweatsuit Day; Wednesday, ‘Push ‘em back into time” — ’50’s Day; Thursday; Orange and Black Day; Friday, “We fit Victory to a “T’”’ — T-Shirt Day. Then came the Pep Rally including the cheerleaders, Pom Pon girls, band and various contest-stunts for the final test between the classes and faculty. The Pep Rally was topped off with a “smash” performance by an elite group of STARS — our faculty. A special TB report was brought to us from the campus of beautiful ECHS by our own Walter Crankcase (Mr. Morse). At the conclusion of the Pep Rally the winner of Spirit Week was announced. At the top of the list were the Seniors (the obvious winners) — they displayed their dominance throughout the entire week. seitabeneeaiaeec Te i i : i : | HOMECOMING PARADE 1980 “RAID THE PATRIOTS” | FIRST | SOPHOMORES “WHALE OF A VICTORY” SECOND SENIORS ¢ go : xe ne x oe a | : | i of “TARY saa Bia Renin sieliooee si inl xf ae, ee) Sele Ao “DE-FEET THE PATRIOTS” THIRD JUNIORS “ROLLIN’ TO A VICTORY” FOURTH FRESHMEN ig es ta ¥ 3 Ded ir iti 4 © ly pee tee - : ” wh hi M SIF: f -33 dtd bh d+ Settte-gy-a+ 4+ tt : 3 heat 2 4 80 THE ROYAL COURT OF Roberta Plym Mary Plym Jennifer Peterson Mike Windish Debbie Plack Susan Wilson Dianne Harkness Lee Ales Cindy Webster Daren Courtright Ronnie Ekena Ken Stewart Lynne Stalter Monica Barton Bob Forney Jonell Simpson Shawn Savage Anita Opper Julie Coulter Gianna Stodgel Jennie Mrs. Umney Lady Canterville Weeds Pam Wendy Mrs. Otis Mr. Otis Virginia Sir Simon Vicar Lord Cecil Mrs. Dampier Madam Balaklava Martin the Maniac Hester the Horrid Lady Joan the Graveless Vampire Duchess Mrs. Midlinter Mrs. Musgrave 48 STUDENT COUNCIL CROSS ACOUNTR. 4 ay yom ik © Sharon Elliott, President; Janis Hurst, Treasurer; Karen McGuire, Secretary; Jim Haines, Reporter. All the schools in the Peoria area competed to see who could collect the largest poundage of aluminum cans. Old and young alike showed deep patronage to the school by the spontaneous reaction they dis- played during the contest. Elmwood led throughout the contest until the final hours. Mr. Maurer was notified at 12:30 P.M. that we were trailing by about 200 pounds. The town came alive! Some students were allowed to go “canning” during the afternoon, while others contributed by drinking the pop (in aluminum cans, naturally) bought and sold by the Seniors. As the final minutes ticked away, townspeople arrived with carloads and truckloads of cans to aid our cause. Despite all our efforts, we had to settle for sec- ond place — losing by a mere 200 pounds or 6 cans per student. Although our devoted leader, Mr. Meyers, pre- dicted us to collect no more than 2500 pounds, we turned in an amazing 3500 pounds.
