X Fitz He possesses the highest qualities of loyalty, dedication, and perserverance. Honest and forthright, his guidance has gained the respect of the entire student body. To Mr. William Fitzgerald, ever available, our friend and counselor, we dedi- cate this yearbook. September The opening of school after a seemingly short summer brought back many familiar faces, along with bewildered expressions beloning to incom- ing sophomores. A rousing pep assembly launched the fall sports season. Enthusiasm radiated from the faces of the students attending the gathering, which showed the spirit that our school has toward its football, soccer, golf, and cross-country teams. Clubs met to plan out activities. A.F.S. wel- comed home Karen Spinelli from her summer stay in Brazil and greeted our foreign exchange stu- dent from Uganda, Grace Ikiring. The first issue of the "Vindex',, under the guidance of Mr. Treu- big, was a great success. After a few weeks of experiencing new classes, new teachers, and adjusting to minor problems, everyone eagerly plunged into the upcoming school year. fl!la..f 42:4 October Rustic leaves and soft breezes distin- guished this autumnal month. Compli- menting these occurances was much glo- ry won by our students. The golf team presented our school with another victory as they captured the Horseheads Invitational golf tournament. National acclaim was given to David Carr and jim Greene by the publishers of Letterman Magazinen. W - M November Crisp and invigorating, November brought our football season to an end. Team and student spirit rode high as the band and Academy At- oms prepared for the Southside- E.F.A. football game. Twenty five years of rivalry and a 12-12 tie would be culminated in this game. Masquers produced "The Wizard of Ozi' and "Winnie the Poohn, both of which were great successes. Seniors faced a multitude of col- lege applications -- all to be filled out and filed by the yearys end. Col- lege entrance was now prime in their minds. December Blustery winds and drifting snow left no doubt in our minds that December was here. Members of the Ski Club ventured to the slopes at every available opportunity. The weather coop- erated with a beautiful snowfall - the beginning of a perfect season. Team enthusiasm knew no bounds as basket- ball, wrestling, gymnastics, and swimming began their competition. The holiday spirit prevailed in everyone, as we anticipated a few days of rest and good cheer. anuary January doldrums of returning to classes and facing mid-terms were offset by the beautiful, crisp, and cold days of winter. Winter sports still heeded our interest. Basket- ball, wrestling, swimming and gymnastic meets gave E. F.A. more victories and a few defeats. We finished the month and mid-terms in good spirits and started a new term with thoughts of spring around the corner. February After the pressure of mid-term examinations, re- turning to a normal schedule of classes relieved many students. Winter was still in strong form as skiers hit the slopes and took advantage of the glo- rious conditions. Weekly basketball games and wrestling matches involved not only the desire ofthe teams as they led us to many victories, but also the students, enthusiasm. Talented bands provided rock music at dances that many students attended. i l 9 arch We breezed through March with many activities behind us. Competition was keen as students vied for positions on the track, ten- nis, and baseball teams. We hosted proud students, par- ents, and faculty at an assembly as the National Honor Society induct- ed members of the junior and Senior classes who had achieved scholastic merit. Spring fever really became evi- dent as southern winds and warm sunshine beckoned students and faculty to outdoor studies. BAL IMRIAL f, in it pril Creeted by fresh Spring, April saw many activities in progress. Our gym was transformed into a Hawai- ian Island for the Aloha Dance. The culmi- nation of the dance was the crowning of the Aloha Queen. Spring sportsmen treated us to many victories. 35' The carefree days of this month tended to lighten the responsibilities of our students. Termination of school sports and activities only led to thoughts of final examinations, just one month away. Good weather made it possible to study outdoors, and, if not award- ed with an honor mark, at least one was able to get a deep tan. june Finals, commencement, and the end of school awaited us as May rolled into june. More than fifty seniors graduated with high honors. Many seniors anticipated col- lege while others prepared to enter voca- tional fields. Underclassmen were relieved as school came to an end, thinking of the coming summer and expectations of the future school year, full of new experiences. De- parting seniors looked forward to a new way of life, and reflected back upon their days in high school. nr. - 55 M A -.2 -meg Q ,.v.-.- V. The Big Blue Machine fought fiercely trying to perfect itself. On the scoreboards we had a losing season but in the mind of each player he knows that a few points don,t always tell the whole story. There is no need to explain the excitement of this years football season. The twenty-fifth Silver Anniver- sary Southside-Academy game commemorated all those who participated in Elmira high school football since 1946. All time greats were gathered into an All- Star twenty-five year team which honored us with their presence during a pre-game presentation. Em- phasis was put on this game since the standing record was tied at 12-12. As we watched our Academy players strive to win, there was no doubt in our minds that it was great men who made our team what it is, and nothing was as clear to us that night. E arf!" '5' W , ,, . . One would in much the same way, that he does to a team who is in first place. The only difference is that a team that has seen the other side of success can truly appreciate the meaning of these words. When a member of the team puts out just a little more it does not go unnoticed. When the smiling faces of the crowd return game after game and when a voice shouts over the saddened silence, HWe,re Proud", it must all be worthwhile. E. F. A. Opponents 91 V Hornell H. H.S. She is the first girl to receive this office in sixty years. The council has succeeded in finishing last yeafs Project of the Year, the situating of more benches around the school grounds, for the stu- dents, use. A band directory was composed to inform schools of what bands are in our area and their prices. They hope to have a bulletin board outside in front of the school completed by the end of this year. Despite some differences of opinion among the staff and a few setbacks, the work continued so that a yearbook could be printed. Unfortunately, the sale of books dropped considerably since last year. However, the busi- ness staff initiated the sale of T-shirts and solic- ited many ads, so that enough money was raised to produce this yearys Torch.
