Friday afternoon is over. The halls have withstood another 3:11 rush of feet
and the last buses, carrying happy teenagers to a two day vacation, have climbed
the long slope in front of the school.
Entering the dim hall from the bright sunlight, we can still hear a slight echo
of voices, "Hey, Iiml 1 passed soc." or 'LGosh, Judy, he's a dollllln
These halls will be inactive for a short time until Monday morning when once
again students and teachers will take up their positions. Maybe their steps will be
slower: but as the week goes by, the pace will increase with the thought: "Friday is
almost here."
In four years a lot of things have come and gone. VVe seniors have experienced
many things .... Remember the year when we all stood by and cheered as Merilvn
Mitchell twisted her way to fame? Her weapon was the hula hoop.
Our first year here. sayings like "dirty bird" crept into the daily conversation ....
That year pink and black was the most . . . And Elmhurst went to the final game
in the sectionals against South Side.
During our second year here, everybody liked 1keg or so the buttons said. Elvis
hit overnight success and sent the girls wild, but our own Gary Schelton also made
the big time when he recorded "Kissin' at the Drive-in." F. O. G. Day was initiated.
In case you're not hep-this is Fraternal Order of Greasers. Girls dressed in old
white shirts and levisg and the boys came in levis, motorcycle iackets. and boots.
The pixie hair cut entered the scene our iunior year and became a well talked
about item. Although few girls got them, a great many threatened to. Our heroes.
the Rah Rah boys, derived a new attire for one of our famous presidents. Thomas
Ielierson, a bust in room 212, really looked hep in his hat and mustache and
earrings .... Crazyll Although Ieff wasn't fortunate enough to wear a chemise.
almost every girl at E. H. S. was sporting that latest fashion. I wonder if Mr. Sinks
ever Figured out the mystery of his daily letters .... Hmmm. A linal memory which
will always linger is the Prom. That seems to be a perfect closing for a perfect year.
At last we're "Seniors"l The thrill of moving into the senior home rooms. and
then . . . they've been moved .... Tradition is broken .... Ah, well. fate dealt us a
hand. We finished where we began-rooms 217, 219, 221 .... VVho knows. kids?
Senior Alley may be the start of a new tradition. Not only did the powers change
the rooms but also a few rules Qmuch to our regretj . . . Remember these words.
"No slacks will be allowed from now on" and also the accompanying groan of all
the girls. This year brought about the craziest .... Think back to these things:
Hula hoop, 49 stars in old glory, "play it cool," and. never to be forgotten. the words:
"Take a half sheet of paper, please." The senior class cannot be outdone by their
predecessors. Remember the Rah Rah Boys? Well, now cast your eyes upon the
E. H. S. Dix-Neuf girls. We have to agree they've outdone their rivals. VVe are
linding that the fastest and bestest year is our senior year. One final anticipation is
Senior Day ancl then . . .
