Commentator Herky brings to you the opening session of the Northeastern llndiana Teachers' Con- vention at the Shrine Theatre. Here's that fine Elm- hurst High School Band garbed in scarlet and gray . . . . .U Besides playing at all of Elmhurst's games in the county and sectional tourneys, the band played at live home basketball games. Last summer they marched in Concordia's One-hundredth Anni- versary Parade, and they participated in the annual Armistice Day Parade. As usual, the Elmhurst Band, directed by Mr. Fry- back, earned high honors in the district, state, and national contests. The district contests were held at Berne and Huntington on March 20 and 30, respec- tively: the state contests were at Elkhart and XVhiting on April 6 and May 4, and the national contest was held from May 16-18 at Battle Creek, Michigan. The oflicers this year were R. Fisher, president: N. Millhouse, vice-president: and P. McCoy, secretary- treasurer. L. Lepper was the assistant conductor, T. Braeuer was the drum major, and B. Miller and C. Kumfer were again the twirlers. The band was made up of 43 instruments, which included 14 clarinets, 6 trumpets, 5 saxophones, 3 Page fllA'V1f.1-Ill trombones. 3 snare drums, 2 cornets, 2 flutes, 2 bari- tones, 2 bass horns, l bass clarinet, 1 bass drum., 1 French horn, and 1 oboe. They practiced almost daily during the forty-minute period in the gymnasium, and all received individual instruction during two additional periods every week. On Sunday, February 4, they presented their an- nual public concert in the school auditorium. In- cluded in the program were four marches, four classical selections. and four popular numbers. Last year the band placed second in division B in the district contest. The saxophone sextet, comprised of Donald Stutc. Bob Parkison, Louie Lepper, Nelson Millhouse, and two '39 graduates, Doris March and W'yllis Wiegnian, again copped first honors in dis- trict, state, and national contests. Tom Braeuer, Harold Mason, Dick Fisher, and Max Buskirk, the clarinet quartet, gained first in the district and second in the state. In solo competition, D. Fisher and D. Stute received first ratings, while P. McCoy and A. Cox earned second honors in the district. D. Stute also earned first place in both state and national contests. B. Miller and C. Kumfer gained first honors in twirling in the state contests.
