The first pa1't of the season was spent in acquainting thc dcbaters with the subject. The squad made several trips to the library for supplement work. The teams, chosen just before the iirst round of debates in the Northeastern Indiana League, were Eliza- beth Porter. Mary Elizabeth vVClSllllllC'l'. and Bob Spenn for the af- iirmativez and Oletha Griftitll. Georgiana Davidson, Ann Stayonotf and Bob Arnold for the negative. The first debate of the season was between the Central Negative and the ,lfllmhurst Affirmative, with Alexander Campbell acting as judge. In this debate the Central team won the decision. .. The same afternoon the teams traveled to Monroe where the negative team of ldlmlnirst defeated the affirmative team of that place. The following week the negative team met the affirmative team from Columbia City at l'llmhurst: Benjamin Null of South Side judged this debate. The lfllmhurst team also won this contest. The last debate of the se1'ies was between the local aiiirmatives and the North Side negatives. with Miss Benner. director of Speech at South Side. giving the critique. This contest was won by the North Side team. This gave the Elm- hurst teams a record of two debates won and two lost.

The next debates were an all day series in which both teams from North Side, Central, and Elmhurst took part, with Professor VVinch of Purdue University as judge. In the iirst debate of the morning session the Central negatives repeated their earlier victory by again defeating the local afnrmatives. But in the following debate, the Elmhurst negative team won the decision from the Central affirma- tive. In the afternoon session, the Central teams defeated both North Side tea111s. In the evening session the Elmhurst negatives suffered the only defeat of the season at the hands of the North Side ailirma- tive team. In the next debate the local ailirniatives avenged their earlier defeat by winning the decision from the North Side negatives. This gave Elmhurst second place in the contest with two debates won and two lost. Since most of the debaters are underclassmen, an even better record is expected for the 1931-35 season. During the week of May 7-11 a varsity team consisting of Bob Arnold, Oletha Gritlith and Mary Elizabeth VV6lSl1llll61' competed in the National Speech Tournament in Topeka, Kansas. Elmhurst has the honor of being one of the six Indiana Schools ever to p2l1't1Cl- pate in the National Speech Tournament. The subject used in all the debates was: Resolved That the United States Should Adopt A System of Radio Control And Operation Similar To That of Great Britianf'
