OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES LAUDED BY HALLER I,MHI'RS'l' Iligh School has been in existance three years, and in that time has made remarkable progress. Elmhurst has been granted the highest type of commission that is given by the stateg she has become a member of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools, an honor that is achieved by very few high schools. lVhat has made those things possible! Of course the teachers have had some small part in this, but I believe the greatest credit must go to the students, and their exceptional school spirit and morale. Again we ask, what has caused this fine feeling among the student body for their school! I believe that this is created in most part outside the class room. in fact in our outside activities. It is of the value of these outside activities that I wish to speak. The primary aim of outside activities at Elmhurst is to develop the pupil to the end that he may exercise greater skill and efficiency in life. Their future good citizenship, service to others, personal hap- piness, and success will depend upon their sucessful relations with people. The final test of training is success in real life rather than mere excellence in the schoolroom tasks. Pupils should be strong in the schoolroom workg they should also have attractive, forceful, personal characteristics. But many other capable pupils show a surprising lack of these. The reason is not far to seek. They have enjoyed little opportunity, whether in the home or the school, to give proper training and expression to their personal powe1's. One of the most important of the Seven Objectives of Educa- tion is the use of free time for worthy activities and pleasures. I believe that our extra-curriculer activities provide for this objective better than can be done in regular class work. I would like to see every student at lfllmhurst identified with some outside activity. It is here that the qualities of initiative, leadership, co- operation. clean sportsmanship. intelligent obedience to the rules of the game. and the acceptance of responsibility are developed.
