OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES LAUDED BY HALLER I,MHI'RS'l' Iligh School has been in existance three years, and in that time has made remarkable progress. Elmhurst has been granted the highest type of commission that is given by the stateg she has become a member of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools, an honor that is achieved by very few high schools. lVhat has made those things possible! Of course the teachers have had some small part in this, but I believe the greatest credit must go to the students, and their exceptional school spirit and morale. Again we ask, what has caused this fine feeling among the student body for their school! I believe that this is created in most part outside the class room. in fact in our outside activities. It is of the value of these outside activities that I wish to speak. The primary aim of outside activities at Elmhurst is to develop the pupil to the end that he may exercise greater skill and efficiency in life. Their future good citizenship, service to others, personal hap- piness, and success will depend upon their sucessful relations with people. The final test of training is success in real life rather than mere excellence in the schoolroom tasks. Pupils should be strong in the schoolroom workg they should also have attractive, forceful, personal characteristics. But many other capable pupils show a surprising lack of these. The reason is not far to seek. They have enjoyed little opportunity, whether in the home or the school, to give proper training and expression to their personal powe1's. One of the most important of the Seven Objectives of Educa- tion is the use of free time for worthy activities and pleasures. I believe that our extra-curriculer activities provide for this objective better than can be done in regular class work. I would like to see every student at lfllmhurst identified with some outside activity. It is here that the qualities of initiative, leadership, co- operation. clean sportsmanship. intelligent obedience to the rules of the game. and the acceptance of responsibility are developed.

his Assistant Guide. Verdella Burgman was chosen Bookkeeper and Betty Driver Ticket-Agent. VVith our leaders chosen. we felt we were full-fledged Trojans, and so we proceeded to give a partv. The Magic Carpet on which we rode Yvas swept to earth where. considering ourselves grown-up. we celebrated the days gone bv with a lively fhow could it be otherwise!! Kid Party. Yvho could ever fo1'get the popcorn. doughnuts, cider and suckers! iThe kind that are on sticks.j For a time after this, things were rather dull for us. Shortly after the visit of the Big Bad YVolf. commonly called Finals . the Inter-class Basketball Tournament drew the attention of our Magic Carpet like a magnet. Our class entered three teams: The Freshmen Five. VVildcats. and Tige1's. In the tourney, the latter, consisting of Laring, Durr. Becker, Heuslien. and Parkison, represented us. These plucky men drew the seniors at the opening of the tourney. They put up a good fight. but were overpowered by the seniors who became school champions. VVhile our faithful Magic Carpet was winding us upward. we all give three cheers for the boys and girls who made the Basketball squad at the start of the season. Here they a1'e: Boys-B. Neuman, YV. Alberts. H. Larens, B. Gebhart, and D. Schererg and Girls- B. Beaman. H. Fussleman. J. Daniels, and H. Gongaware. . And while we're at it, let's give those who went out for band and orchestra a big hand. There's J. Oswald. C. Hallman. V. lVolfe. R. Jackson, E. Hartmen, L. Bucker, M. Robertson, J. Alden. F. A contest, the Anlibrum popularity contest. The nominees are Marilyn Fox. Ver- della Bergman, Marjorie Hargrave. Don Scherer. Dick Parkison. and Ernest Pond. The final result was in favor of Dick Parkison and our little Marjorie Hargrave. Speeding up again, the Magic Carpet heads us to the Final Finals . and sophomorism. Wie hope our future journey will bc as pleasant as this past one. VVe'll be back next fall to become the largest sophomore class in the school's history. Au Revoir!
