The Montgomery was on station in Wizard fOZ in the Northem Red Sea for 125 days con- ducting MIF Operations in support of UN sanctions against IRAQ during Operation Desert Shield. The Boarding Team set the bench mark for boarding proce- dures in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. Demonstrating total dedication and professionalism, 100 merchant vessel boardings were conducted safely and effectively. Even at night during rough seas, the motor whale boat would transport the Boarding Team to the suspect ves- sel. A muster of the crew, inspection of the ship's cargo holds and paper work was accomplished on each ves- sel. After reporting all information, the vessel was either allowed to proceed or diverted to a port not in IRAQ, KU- WAIT, or JORDAN. The Elmer Montgomery and her Boarding Team were the first MIF Centurians in Opera- tion Desert Shield. SSDF The USS Elmer Montgomery Ship Self Defense Force was responsible for providing cover during MIF boarding operations during Operation Desert Shield. Manning the forward and after .50 caliber machine gul'lS and the bridge wing mounted M-60 machine guns, the SSDF was the primary coverage of merchant vessel Cr6W members mustered topside. All activity topside on the merchant vessel was observed and reported by the SSDF and the signal bridge to the pilot house while the Boarding Team was enroute to and from the suSPeCt vessel. The SSDF was manned and ready to meet all contingencies that the Boarding team may encounter to ensure their safe retum.
