AS DIVISIO Locating, identifying and destroying enemy sub- marines is the mission of ASW and AS Division, and when given the chance, carries out that mission ex- tremely well. M With the hopes of conducting a number of NATO and U.S. submarine training exercises, the men of the anti-submarine division set sail for the Mediterranean cruise 5190. Their hopes were soon dashed when Oper- ation Desert Shield called upon the mighty warship gf MONTGOMERY to assist with Maritime lnterdiction li Force operations in the Red Sea. There, instead of chasing submarines, AS Divi- sion manned the ships self defense force to provide cover for our boarding parties many trips to and from suspect merchant vessels. After an arduous five months and 100 successful boardings, the men of AS Division proudly accepted a letter of commendation from the Commanding Officer, R.A. Higgins, and re. tumed to the Med where they could continue their customary job of busting submarines. AS Division: Need a job, any job, done right?
