IT WAS THE FIRST TIME A U.S. WAR- SHIP HAS COME TO THE AID OF A NON- U.S. FLAGGED TANKER SINCE SECRE- TARY OF DEFENSE FRANK CARLUCCI AN- NOUNCED IN APRIL THAT SUCH ASSIS- TANCE WOULD BE PROVIDED WHEN RE- QUESTED, LT. COL. ARNOLD WILLIAMS SAID IN WASHINGTON. THE CHALLENGE CAME HOURS AF- TER IRAQI WARPLAN ES ATTACKED TWO IRANIAN TANKERS, SHATTERING A NEARLY THREE-WEEK LULL IN THE GULF'S UTANKER WAR." WILLIAMS SAID THE USS ELMER MONTGOMERY, PATROLLING THE AREA, RESPGNDED TO A REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE FROM THE TANKER, IDEN- TIFIED BY GULF SHIPPING SOURCES AS THE KARAMA MAERSK, WHICH THEY SAID WAS CARRYING SAUDI ARABIAN CRUDE OIL. HTHETANKER REPORTED BEING UN- DER ATTACK FROM THREE SMALL IRAN- IAN GUNBOATS," WILLIAMS SAID. "BY THE TIME THE MONTGOMERY GOT INTO RANGE, TWO OF THE GUNBOATS HAD LEFT. HE SAID THE INCIDENT OCCURRED ABOUT 13 MILES SOUTH OF ABU MUSA ISLAND. IN JULY LAST YEAR, U.S. WARSHIPS BEGAN ESCORTING 11 KUWAITI OIL TANKERS THAT WERE REFLAGGED WITH THE AMERICAN FLAG. IN THE NORTHERN GULF, SALVAGE TUGBOATS FOUGHT FLAMES SATUR- DAY FROM THE TWO IRANIAN SUPER- TANKERS. THEY WERE HIT AS THEY I SAILED SOUTH FROM THE KHARG IS- LAND LOADING TERMINAL, ACCORD- ING TO SHIPPING EXECUTIVES. NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED. THE TANKERS WERE STILL BURNING 12 HOURS AFTER THE ATTACKS LATE I FRIDAY AND EARLY SATURDAY, SAID THE SHIPPING SOURCES. THE TWO TANKERS HAD BEEN ATTACKED AT I LEAST SEVEN TIMES IN THE LAST 18 I MONTHS. THE GULF HAD BEEN QUIET SINCE I MIDIUNE, WITH ACTION IN THE NEARLY I if-YEAR-OLD WAR CONCENTRATED ON I BATTLEFIELDS ALONG THE 730-MILE I FRONTIER, WHERE IRAQ'S FORCES I HAVE SCORED A SERIES OF MAJOR VIC- I TORIES IN THE LAST THREE MONTHS.
