Golly those arrows by the stairs every time I wanted to go up or down stairs the little red arrow would tell me I was going the wrong way With small white card rn hand and the wrll to find the way we lrttle freshmen became acquainted with each room teacher and upperclassman fin one way or anotherj Yes rt was bewildering at first but after the first month or so we all felt a real part of Ellsworth High The Senior Get Together was our fxrst social event It was loads of fun and we got a good look at the seniors Gee they weren t so bad after all Later on after we had become acquainted with each other we elected our class officers They were president Jack Rose vrce president Bob Kilpatrick secretary Ardelle Smith and treasurer Herbert Hunt Other than the precious addition of new freshmen to Ellsworth that year the faculty welcomed some other ones Miss Arax Charkoudran English teacher Mr John McMillan boys physical education instructor and coach and Miss jean Janelle girls physical education instructor and social studies teacher became a part of our brg happy family How I remember one of our first assemblies' It was a spelling bee among all four classes Marcia Adams Esther Lathrop and Bob McClatchey who was our class genrus and got five Es the first marking period Cand by the way has kept this excellent record almost throughout his four years at EMHSJ represented our freshman class Were we ever proud when we won the contest' I wonder whether we really proved that the youngest are the wxsest In late March we gave the sophomores a party rn return for the one they had given earlier in the school year The theme of the party was School Daze Cspelled D A Z EQ The boys did look so sweet and lnnocent in the chorus line especially wrth their short pants and big bow ties Golly dear drary w never did Hnd out where Harvey got the courage to sweep hrs sweetheart into his arms when he played the part of the romantic janitor in our skit Hed never think of such a thing during rehearsals During the last few months of school that year we went our freshmanly way while the sophisticated seniors went their merry way in preparing for their graduation Oh would we EVER be SCDIOIS7 September 9 1953 Dear Diary Back to school again but as sophomores It was great seeing all of our pals and hearing about summer experiences However it wasnt long before we were in the swtng of homework and intensive studying Soon we elected our class officers Bob Kilpatrick was president Herbert Hunt vice president Joan Myers secre tary and Betsy Bond was elected treasurer On the evening of October 16 William Chapman better known to us as Skip was Master of Ceremonies at our Barn Dance that we gave for the freshmen Both round and square dancing kept the students rn a lively sprrrt Dur mg the entertainment some of our girls dld the Charleston and quite a dance it was With the assistance of our class advisors Mr Harland Cass Mr Stephen Romarne Miss Mary Caffrey and Mrss Ann Duffy our party was a real hrt Fall arrived and brought with it two disabled sopho mores' Our first casualty was Larry Morse who had a broken leg When he came back to school supported by his crutches all of us kept an eye out for him and made sure we didnt collide with him especially on the stairs Lo and behold' We just got Larry under control when Bill Krawskr had an accident his foot was injured and he too appeared at school with all the paraphernalra that accompanies such a happen mg By about that trme one was not keeping with the fad unless he had crutches and a cast Well at least the boys had a good excuse for being late to class' ' That year Ellsworth had representatives in many activi tres Bob McClatchey bass was sent to the All State Chorus which held its festival at the Bushnell Memorial rn Hartford The junior Red Cross was getting a start at EMHS in 1952 Betsy Bond and Bob McClatchey were chosen to rep resent our school at regional and local meetings New Britain was the scene of a girls Field Day several girls from our class attended the get together In February the Freshman Sophomore party was held A good trme was had by all Our annual Pops Concert under the direction of Miss Antonma Dzrob featured several of our talented sophomores Bob McClatchey soloed on the accordion Larry Morse and Marjorie Stratton appeared in a clarinet ensemble Paul Frost was our vocalist and Nina Aleshrn and Linda Grant ap peared as piano accomparusts for the choruses June rolled around and a sigh of relief could be heard throughout the school as the summer vacation lay before us September 8 1954 Dear Diary This was to be our junior year so jam packed with activities Our class elected president Bob McClatchey vtce president Paul Frost secretary Linda Grant and treasurer Diane Nerld to represent us on the Student Council 7 . - - V 1 ' 1 , . . , . . Mlss Mary Caffrey extreme art lovers we managed to create an artrstrc effect rn the gym for our Jumor Dance which was called Autumn Mobrles Bob Thrbodeau was general charrman of the event Students danced under the revolvtng mobrles to the musrc of the Moonlrghters Before we knew tt May was gust a couple of months away so under the drrectron of our CoCha1rmen Jean Moore and Bob Krlpatrrck plans Aprrl we took trme out to partlcxpate rn our Pops Concert In our own way we consldered rt perhaps one of the best musrc presentatrons at Ellsworth The feelrng of losrng our East Wrndsor talent caused more harmony rn our work We even went so far as to have our grrls rn the chorus dress formally The gowns were beautrful and added much to our program Wrth our concert over rt was back to workrng on the Prom The evemng finally came wrth the arr of excrtement and even a lrttle nervousness Couples entered the gymnasrum It was so beautrful we could hardly think of rt as the gym A fountam of angel harr under a star studded sky proved to be an excellent back ground for all the photographs Handmade flowers and streamers decorated the walls whrle the throne of the royalty was made of prnk and whrte angel harr wrth srmrlar colored flowers Evetythrng from dreamy dance musrc to the Bunny Hop was provrded by Pat Burd and hrs orchestra Crowned as queen was Marcra Adams wrth Betsy Bond and Nance Frarze as her attendants They were a beautrful srght and were certamly three of the PICIIICSI gtrls ever to be crowned Many of the yunrors topped off therr evenmg at the Statler Hotel rn Hartford where they ate and danced The sandwrches were a lrttle expensrve but we all agreed that we had a marvelous trme and wlll never forget the fun we had For almost three whole years our class had had the honor or should I say luck of never berng accused of treadrng on the sacred front steps Of course rt had to happen and rt drd Drane Nerld a promment and actrve jumor was accused and convrcted of walkmg on the front steps Decked out nn a surtable outfit provrded by the generous semor class Drane was rnsprred by her classmates and con vrctors to scnrb on She surely was a good sport Later rn the year we held electrons for summer and senror actrvrtres Ruth Jurgelas and Judy Wfoodmansee were chosen to go to Grrls Laurel State and Harvey Della Bet narda was elected to go to Boys Nutmeg State The year book staff was also selected Edrtor was Harvey Della Ber narda wrth Margo Reardon and Lmda Grant assrstrng hxrn Ellen Smlth and Peter Frles served as Art Edrtors and Ardelle Smrth Harold Schortman Ruth Jurgelas and Brll Krawskr were busrness managers On a brrght day m June the day came that our class had been warnng for for three years We were presented the sacred front steps by the ours to use at wrll to enpoy on sunny days and to clean or have cleaned Dehmtely our Junror year was a year of happy memorres Undoubtedly the most excrtrng and most memorable hap penrng occurred on the evenmg of March 8 1955 Our Ellsworth Bobcats won the Class C basketball tournament Wrth the cheerleaders two of whom were Jean Moore and Judy Woodmansee and students cheerrng them on we de feated Wrndsor Locks Hrgh School by a score of 52 33 Heaps of enthusrasm and prrde rergned wrthm the school for many weeks to follow In fact the mormng after the game the bell even rang five or ten mtnutes later than usual Brll Dezso Andy Johndrow Jack Rose who was chosen as one of the All State Basketball team members from Ells worth and Doug Zregra were among the partrcrpants of our champronshrp game Soccer and baseball led by our lettermen Lenny Ander son Skip Chapman Brll Dezso Harvey Della Bernarda Peter Frles Andy Johndrow Larry Lyman Bob McClatchey Jack Rose Anthony Stephen and Doug Zregra to vrctory many a trme whrle Bev Byrnes and Lmda Grant actrvely did therr part as managers One of our brggest treats of the year was a supper grven to the gurls and boys basketball teams by the Rockvrlle Elks Club Everybody had a srmply luscrous meal whrch was followed by a few short speeches and the presentatron of a plaque to the Ellsworth Champs how we drd sympathgze wrth Mrss Jean Janelle grrls coach when she was asked to make a small speech on the spur of the moment' All Ellsworth Nrght was the event that concluded our champronshlp season Unrversrty of Connecticut basketball Our lives have been molded by our teachers And cultivated by the friends we've made. Though our days here are almost ended, We have memories that are n'er to fade. As we gather here for our honors, Thinking how the years have flown, We look back and say to ourselves, "What now? Are we ready to face the unknown? If our time and our work have been wisely spent, We really have no need to fear, For the ways of the world are only the doors To all that our hearts hold dear. We feel we're prepared for whatever comes next, And we say as we wave good bye, "We'll always remember the days we've spent At our dear old Ellsworth High." --By Larry Morse li 32 Qlllass Sung hge, axe. teavfnd our funn.
