ELLISIAN
FIELDS
Zzaaewaad
Again it is June. Again the teachers are writing
final examinations and students are a-tremble.
Once more the graduates will listen to a Com-
mencement address, receive their diplomas, and
so, at last, become alumnae of their Alma Mater.
Through the years, we, the Class of 194-5, have
approached this season each time wishing we were
Seniors about to be released from the routine of
school life. Now that our wish is to be fulfilled,
the eagerness to leave has lost the importance it
once had. Although we separate, each girl to fol-
low her own career, we shall ever be held in one
common bond. We are Ellis girls. We of 19415
are a war class, yet we have been given the same
understanding and discipline that Ellis has always
given her students.
This, our yearbook, is not meant to be merely
a record of our past years at Ellis. We would
offer it as a farewell tribute to the faculty, the
students and servants with whom we have been
associated so long. We realize that our best tribute
must come through the years in the fulfillment of
the noble purpose they have set for us.

Her quick flashing eyes, her ski-jump nose, and her demonstrative
hands have served as Betty's passport into the collective herd of the
Ellis School this year. Her sense of humor has carried us through
most critical batttles over thc senior play and the yearbook, although
in Chemistry Lab, sometimes, the mighty crash and smash of much
breaking glass has Ill0Illl'Y'ltI1I'lly stifled her laughter. When I think
that, after this year, Betty will depart for the wide, wide world of
college. "It makes me want to cry." XXX

Hey, everyhody, hop in. We are on our way to Bea's Farm. Look,
there she is now, driving that tractor in the field to the right! We'd
know her anywhere by that sunny smile. She sees us and is motion-
ing for us to come over. That's typical of her-always so friendly.
"Hi Bea! What's new? VVe heard you were in Cleveland huying a
new formal for the Ellis Alumnae Dance." With a gracious hospital-
ity, she shows us around her neat little farm. When the time comes to
depart we leave her, waving and smiling. "Good-bye. come again soon."

Here comes Marnie, a real terror on the hockey field and a true

she has those all-around qualities that make her one of the hest treas-

On one particularly bright, sunny day the porch of the Sehenley
Hotel was monopolized by five old ladies who sat and dreamed of
their youth, rocking back and forth, back and forth. Marian Smith
stopped rocking suddenly and sat up very straight. "The Supreme
Court never had a better Chief Justice. And tllen to be asked to
retire! I was just getting into my argumentative stride!"
She settled back again, flushed and indignant. The placid old
dame stretching in the corner, looked up. "Do you mind the time my
first group of paintings were exhibited at Carnegie Institute. Critics
stared at my riots of color and exclaimed, 'The name, Margaret
Swagler, will become more famous than Dali'. It did," she chuckled,
returning to her doodling.
"Buneos dias, senoritas," greeted Joan Lund, coming up the
porch steps toting the parchesi board under her arm. "Anne-Anne
Wellingerf' she prodded the snoozer gently. "Wake up, Anne. It's
time for our parchesi game."
Anne yawned widely and pulled her chair towards the table.
"We've decided to send our first grandson to Yale, just like father,"
Joan announced. "I just love having a Yale man in the family."
Betty Ayers hohbled across the porch, pulling tight around her
an electric blue shawl. Observing through her bifocals Margaretis
attempt at a thumbnail sketch, she screamed cheerfully, "What is it,
kitsel, a pig or a tree "
"Dear old Betty, it's you," returned Margie wryly. "You think
you're so-so smooth, just because ages ago you won that farce of a
soap box race."
Then, to soothe Anne's ruffled feelings fAnne was rapidly losing
the gamej Joan paused to read a portion of her latest letter from
Beatrice Clark.
"Bea says to tell you she can never thank you enough for your
bromi-stethofluoric ray machine, Anne. She says it saved her new
pig litter this year. It should win the Nobel prize."
Joan's eyes were on the letter, and Anne brightening visibly.
seized the opportunity to put her elbow strategically on the fold of
the parchesi board, dumping its contents and ending the unfortunate
game. Whereupon the curly-haired tot bumbling around the floor.
seized one of the fallen parchesi men and began to pound it against
the porch rail, crowing all the while.
"Ricky, you give that to me this instant" demanded Mary Reed.
She hoisted her smallest grandson high in the air. "You'll never
guess what this imp did yesterday"-she broke oif into uncontrollable
giggles and had to be pounded on the back.
"Now, is Rick, one of your sons' sons or your second daughteris
son?" began Marion conversationally, just as the porch screen door
wheezed shut, and Jean McSwigan appeared, followed by an adoring
old gentleman.
"Her best lavender sprigged organdy" whispered Joan.

Sahara! Sang
Through the hours of work and pleasure,
We have spent together here,
Building up the golden treasure of success
That's e'er so dearg
Struggling straight and ever onward,
With our motto strong and bright
We are bound to fight as comrades,
For our colors, green and white.
Fleeting time will serve to sever,
Ties we've ever held so dear,
Others will be bound together
Close in friendship and good cheer,
But therc's nothing e'er can shake us
From our pledge of loyalty
And the battles will but take us
Through the joys of victory.
Far beyond the dear, old school days,
Looking back on mem'ries dear,
They'll be more than golden rule days,
Seen thru reason's vision clear
As we fight in lifc's great battles,
Striving ever for the right,
Then we'll praise our Alma Mater,
And her colors green and white.

SENIOR PROPHECY fContinuedj
"She certainly is the spry one" Anne commented. "Outlived
three husbands already, and she's still going strong!"
"Sad though" this from Mary Reed, "losing her twin that way.
Went oil' on some exploring expedition. Never heard of since, they
say."
At that moment a blithe young girl bounded up the porch steps.
Why it looks like-no, it couldn't be-but it is-Joan McSwigan, gay
and sparkling as in her youth, called out "Girls! Girls, I've found it!
The miraculous fountain of youth! Follow me!"
There was a mad scramble as the old ladies, followed closely by
the eager old gentleman, trooped oil' down the steps and out of sight,
seeking new youth for more and greater achievements.
Little Ricky was left contentedly chewing on one of the aban-
doned parchesi dice.
