USS ELL! IDD-9 6 7 J pf' E 7 .'o u '1' 5.2 Q ,r ' 'X Q S 2- 2 U55 ELLIOT IDD-967j, commissioned on January 22, 1977, is the fifth ship of the 31-ship class of Spruance destroyers. She is named in honor of LCDR Arthur J. ELLIOT II, who, while in command of River Squadron 57, was killed during an engagement with enemy forces in the Mekong Delta. ELL.l'O7'is the first ship of the class to bear the name of a Vietnam war hero. At 563 feet in length, ELLIOTdisplaces over 9,200 tons. Her four General Electric LM 2500 gas turbines generate 80,000 shaft horsepower and enable her to attain speeds in excess of 30 knots. On her maiden deployment in 1979, ELL.l'07'conducted counter-sunfeillance operations against the Minskbattle group in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, and was responsible for great improvements in U.S. understanding of Soviet naval operations. After the tragic downing of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 off Sakhalin Island in 1983, ELLIOZ with only four hours notice, got underway from Sasebo, Japan and steamed at 32 knots for over 1,000 miles to assume duties as on-scene search-and-rescue commander 7 ELLIOT operates offensively in both the Strike Warfare and the Undersea Warfare arenas, either independantly or in company with Amphibious or Carrier Task Forces. The ship's digital gun and missile fire control systems provide quick reaction in the performance of Surface Warfare, Air Warfare, and Naval Surface Fire Support missions. ELL.l'O7'is outfitted with the powerful Outboard electronics intelligence suite, state-of-the-art hull- mounted sonan tactical towed array sonan and embarks the LAMPS CLight Airborne Multi-Purpose Systemb MK III SH-60B helicopter for long-range reconnaisance and targeting data. Armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, NATO Sea Sparrow anti-air missiles, Harpoon and Penguin anti-ship missiles, two 5 !54 caliber dual-purpose guns, anti-submarine torpedoes, and two 20mm close-in weapons system mounts, ELLIOTis among the most lethal warships afloat today. The Coat of Arms of U55ELL.l'0Tserves as a Heraldic remembrance of the ship's namesake, Lieutenant Commander Arthur James Elliot II. The red, white and blue partitions of the shield are patterned after the insignia of LCDR Elliot's command, River Squadron Fifty Seven. Red is the Heraldic symbol of courage, zeal and leadership, white symbolizes integrity, blue represents devotion and perserverance. The unsheathed sword is symbolic of command, and its position on the shield, pointed downward, is significant of death in combat. The crest, composed of mainmast and mainsail, symbolizes the Elliot family's long association with the nautical heritage of their native state of Maine. Generations of the family engaged in the shipbuilding and sailing trades, including LCDR Elliot's paternal grandfather and namesake Arthur J. Elliot, whose shipbuildin9 firm launched the last five-masted schooner ever built in America. The pine tree emblazoned on the sail is the symbol of the state of Maine. f The ship's motto Courage, Honon Integrity, is representative of these values which characterized LCDR Elliot throughout his career. The motto serves as both a guide and an inspiration for the crew wh0 will serve in USS ELL.1'O7'throughout her commissioned life. 2 :E i 'i-iw' ' 'qw Y I 'vu' 'I JIHUII lie in.,..1'.-fv-f-4- V rn- -- .
