Prior to the commencement of WESTPAC-90, ELLIOT participated in PACEX-89, the largest major naval exercise to be held in the Pacific since the close of World War ll. PACEX-89 provided EL- LlOT's Battle Group Charlie an opportunity to operate together and train as a Carrier Task Group before deployment. Departing 9 September 1989, ELLIOT oper- ated locally off San Diego, then journeyed north to the Gulf of Alaska, then into the Bering Sea, the Northwest Pacific, the East China Sea and finally the Sea of Japan before returning home on 9 No- vember 1989. I During PACEX-89 ELLIOT participated in a vari- ety of naval warfare exercises, and, experienced close-up, rough weather operations in some very heavy seas. ELLIOT conducted joint operations with other units of the Pacific Fleet as well as ele- ments of the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force. During the exercise two Soviet TU-95 BEAR D reconnaissance aircraft overflew ELLIOT and the Battle Force. High points of PACEX-89 included a personnel transfer at-sea with a U.S. submarine, a Sasebo, Ja- pan, port visit and the grand finale of a photo ses- sion in which over 50 ships gathered in formation for one picture. The group consisted of two air- craft carriers, two battleships, numerous cruisers, destroyers, frigates, amphibious ships and sup- port ships. 22. fm ffm?
