SELBY STANLEY E. GRANTHAM HARRY PARLETT ALBERT L. RIDGELY HOWARD S. KUHN ISAAC H. TAYLOR EFORE the actual plans for the new high school were made, there was much controversy as to whether or not the plans for building the new school were too pretentious. However, after a few months of discussion the Board of County Commissioners bonded the county to purchase a site at Ellicott City for the erection and equipment of the school on said site. The Ellicott City Times supported the people in their desire for the new and much needed high school. Campaign buttons were distributed among the people who proudly displayed them as proof of their desire for the new school. Finally, on November 18, 1924, the actual laying of the cornerstone under the auspices of Patmos Lodge No. 70, A. F. and A.. M. took place. Students of the old school, led by the Mt. Airy Band, paraded through the town to the new site. Preceding the ceremony of laying the cornerstone, the student body of the old school together with many visitors, attended exercises held in the auditorium. Patriotic songs were sung by the school children and addresses were made by Mr. Albert S. Cook, State Superintendent of Education, and Mr. Woodland C. Phillips, Superintendent of Howard County Schools, who acted as chairman. Placed in the box in the cornerstone were the following contents: Directory of school oflicials and teachers in the state of Maryland 1924-1925g list of oflicials and representative citizens in Howard County, the Ellicott City Times, dated February 7, 1924, contained an article entitled "Howard County Schools, Big Events", the Baltimore Sun of November 18, 19245 High School, "Focus" of June 1924 contained "In Memoriam" for Miss Bertha R. Brown, also combined faculties' picture, High School "Focus" of September and October, 1924, Campaign buttons of Ellicott Patrons Club bearing the slogan "A New School For All-Now-Let's Get It", Pledge Cards advocating immediate action for the new Schoolg Panorama of the student body of the Ellicott City High School Page Six taken in March 1924, numbered and named, brief outline of education in Ellicott City, and a copy of the program for cornerstone laying, November 18, 1924. Father of Lester Long, president of the Senior Class of '39, H. Lester Long, a graduate of Ellicott City High School of 1914, had the supreme honor of laying the cornerstone because he was Worshipful Master of the Lodge at that time. During the years that the Messrs. Brown, Frank, and Yingling have been principals, the school has advanced so as to become a necessary part of the com- munity life, both intellectually and socially. Our curriculum has been rounded out to fit both those who desired further scholastic work and those who went into the business field immediately. Through these years, our alumni and friends have seen vast improvement in school spirit, an increasing interest in the library, a great change in the school grounds and property, also the long desired accommodations for the gymnasium. To these we could add numerous other items, but we feel that they can all be summed up in these few words: "The present is the living sum-total of the whole pastf'-Carlyle. Let's all stand for love and loyalty And gain success, Then some day we'll have our victory From doing our hestg Let's all join in giving praise to thee, Ellicott City In all sorts of weather, we will work along together, True and faithful everyone to thee. -Helen Sydnor. Class Song Sung to tune of "Alma Mater" Ellicott City dear old high school We sing our praise to theeg Love and honor are our praises Held by memory. Here we learned to play and conquerg We fought for thy dear name. At times we were almost defeated, But we won again. ...2... We have studied four years happily With friends and facultyg Learning how to meet and conquer Learning to be brave. Sylvia Allen Eleanor Hockman Frank Stapf Page Nineteen E. C. H. S. THE ORACLE 1939 Class Prophecy NE cool morning in the late fall of the year 1945, I boarded a large monoplane bound for Chicago. As I took the chair that was assigned me by the hostess, I imme- diately recognized hcr to be none other than my favorite classmate, Sylvia Allen. I was more than glad to see her and surprised that she had achieved the ambition that I had darcd her to undertake when we were in school. Then, she led me to the cabin where I met the pilot, William Clarke, another pal of '39. The three of us recalled old mem- ories and had many a laugh. Thus my journey was spent quite the contrary to what I had expected. We landed. I bade them farewell and happy landing. As I made my way across the field, I was headed off by two grease monkeys, Stanley Rogers and Russell Baugher. They had heard that I was on the plane and expressed their desire to see me, which was granted them by Major John Urspruch, who was now in charge of the airport. It was more than I could stand. All of us being there together made it seem as if we were back again in school. Skipping the formalities, I went on my way for I had an urgent appointment at the U. S. Department of Agriculture. After entering the building, I inquired for the head of the Extension Branch, Phillip Thompson. When the secretary rose to answer, I recognized her to be none other than the outstanding Commercial student of our class, Mary Miller. Seeing Mary there was truly a great surprise. As we walked down the corridor we passed through an inner ofhce where, to my amazement, Marie M'acKinzie, Rosa Lee Moore, Bernadette Ridgely, Helen Ament, Bessie Martin, Hazel Miller, and Marian Mellor were busily pounding away on their typewriters. What a happy crowd they seemed. All pals of the same department in school working to- gether in the same field of business in the same office. We smiled a greeting and went on because I did not wish to detain them from their work. Mary left me to my musings until it was time for my appointment with Phil. Since he was expecting me, we skipped the formalities and proceeded with the business. Finally, lunch time arrived. Together we went to the corner drug store to partake of a noonday meal. At the soda fountain sat two young school teachers who were arguing some- thing in French. At once, I recognized their voices, for I had so often heard these same two debating in school. Yes, it was Charlotte Baugher and Ruth Graham. Together we ate, drank, and were merry for none of us knew just when we would see each other again. Our chatting was interrupted by a special news bulletin over the radio. Ernest Volckman, whom we believed to have been lost, was found to have joined the Foreign Legion. Naturally, this made us all feel better as Ernest was a classmate back in dear old '39. Once more, we resumed a general discussion of "How is everyone?" and "Where is so-and-so?" to our heartis content. But time waits for no man, so we hastily finished and left the soda fountain with an engagement to spend the evening at the Chicago Opera House where Nora Bazzell and Roger Tittsworth, accompanied by Helen Sydnor, were giving their first real performance of the season. That afternoon, Phil closed his oH7ice early as he had an appointment with a dentist, Lester Long. Naturally, I accompanied Phil. Not that he was afraid, but because I wanted to see Lester. Upon arriving at the Pain Shop, Mary Sue Howell made her exit. Noticing that she had on a white uniform, I was informed by Phil that Mary had become the nurse for Lester. What a break for him! Both were beginners in their work, and it was pleasant to be working with someone they knew. Hanging on the walls of the dentistls office were Page Twenty E. C. I-I. S. TI-IE ORACLE 1939 Class Prophecy Qcontj etchings, beautiful etchings of the great open spaces. The artists were a shock to me. Why? Below the pictures were the names of Eva Mae Jones and Jacqueline Mitchell. Both of these girls had drawn the sketches for our year book. Later, Lester informed me that their work had won first prize in a contest at the Chicago Fair, Both girls were spending their vacation in Chicago and had left with Lester some etchings that he wanted. Presently the door opened and in walked Eleanor Hockman. You can imagine her surprise at Ending me there. Mary had made an appointment with Eleanor to have her nails manicured, and here she was on time, as usual. As soon as Eleanor had finished manicuring Mary's nails, and a beautiful job it was, we all left the office and went to Eleanor's apartment where she and Rebecca Shipley were now living. Becky, at the present time, was employed at Leesfield Department Store, and she was soon to return home for dinner. It was not long before we heard her footsteps on the thrcshhold. In she walked with both arms full of packages. Several things needed to be altered, and Becky had brought them home with her to fix during the evening. When she saw all of us standing there, she could not find time for her work as there were so many things to be said that could not be put aside. Dinner was prepared in haste, as someone noticed that we would have to leave for the opera. Curtain. Opera over. Backstage we went to congratulate Nora and Roger. They had done a splendid piece of work. Suddenly, a hoarse voice called out, "Hey, wait for me." Shouldering his way through the crowd was none other than Edgar Whipps, all clad in his paraphernalia of medals. Edgar informed us, when we had inquired of him concerning his collection of medals, that he had won these prizes for candid camera snapshots at the Fair. Without a word of warning, he snapped our pictures with our mouths opened in awe at his work. With the pleasantries over, we dispersed for the night, each facing his own destination. Slowly they all faded out of sight. Ting-a-ling-ling-a-ling! the alarm clock was sounding the hour. Quickly, I arose from slumber. I did not mind the alarm after having had such happy dreams of my classmates of dear old E. C. H. S. FRANK STAPF. Page Twenty-one C. H. S. THE ORACLE 1939 . 'Shirt Sleeves" is a true domestic comedy, honestly conceived and honestly written. It explains the flimsiness of the obstacles and haziness of the ill-defined boundaries between the three estates in American society. The play makes clear the ease with which these boun- daries are crossed, either upward or downward. The main theme is centered around the shirt sleeve days of old Jonathan. The approach of a new shirt sleeve era in the family life of the Rands weakens the family structureg but good name, good traditions, and good char- acter overcome all obstacles and launch the family with united strength upon a new cycle. News reached the village that a thief had been stealing the prize tulip bulbs. Immediately a scheme occurred in the minds of Ned and Dick, American Students, to make themselves the heroes in order to win the affections of Christina and Katinka, charming Dutch maidens. Christina revealed to Ned the secret about the stocks. He discovered that they were very valuable and thus saved them for her.
