Hlgh School the flrst 1ll1bllC school dormltory 1n
the Unlted States The 1110116613 need have had no

evltable that hand 1n hand w1th the healthy pro

and new ldeals were created whxch resulted 1n
the present hlgh school plant an 1nst1tut1on ded
lCat9d to SEFXICC to Stfalght thxnklng to worth
whxle work and to h1gh ldeals of 11v1ng
The years have wrought s1gn1f1cant changes and
aga1n because of the marked IHCFEHSE ID enroll
ment we are faced w1th an expans1on problem
The establlshment of the proposed Junlor Hlgh
School would have solved the problem of add1
tlonal class roon1 faClllIl0S for some t1me to come
However 1t was thought WISE to glve up the Junlor
Hlgh School plan and the b1ll passed by the 1929
leglslature prov1d1ng for a new gymnaslum was
unfortunately lost Consequently the overcrowded
cond1t1on has become a ser1ous handlcap as now
practlcallv every department IS lnadequate
Septen1ber 1929 usl1e1ed '77 Freshmen lDtO the
hlgh school and a survey dlscloses the fact that
the succeedlng years w1ll see even greater mcreases
Wlth locker and class room fac1l1t1es for a max
1mum of 150 students a l1brary to accommodate
24 w1th no assembly hall and no room ln the
class room bu1ld1ng large enough to hold over '10
students wlth a gymnaslum too small to provlde
elther for the phys1cal tra1n1ng or athlet1c pro
gram and the locker and dresslng rooms 1nadequate
to serve 111011 thin 00 students the Slllldll0l1 IS
111 nlv c11t1c'1l as all lIldlCHll0I1S ure that the Sep
l9ll1b91 1930 enrollment w1ll probably reach 230
and the 1931 e11roll1nent 250
It w1ll be of mtexest to rev 1ew some of the 1111
portant changes of tl1e past 20 vears from the
standpoxnt of the progress we 111ay expect ln the
lI11I119dl3lf" futme For example the enrollment 111
crersed from 14 lll 1909 to 114 lI1 1919 1nd to 219
111 1929 the number on the I9aChll1g staff IH 1909

1919 there were 35 e11rolled and 84 111 1929
Commercml work was offered 1n 1909 38 were
enrolled 111 1919 and 205 are enrolled for 1929 ln
1909 only RCAGCUIIC subjects were offered wh1le by
1929 the 8I1I'lC1l8d cu1r1culum offered all sorts of
courses that make for constructlve forward look

DYOYIIISE of the advances to be expected under
norn1al cond1t1ons
The hlgh school authorltles have had the prob
lem under consrderatlon for some t1me and be
cause of the tremendous expense which would be
mvolved for a spec1a1 elect1on to vote upon bonds
lt was determ1ned that such course should be
8YOld6d 1f 1JOSS1b10 Consequently a plan w1ll prob
ably be adopted whereby arrangements w1ll be
made to have the quest1on voted upon at the Gen
eral Electlon to be held ln November 1930 The
c1t1zens of Elko County are urged to make every
poss1ble 1nvest1gat1on so that the merlts of the
proposed expans1on program may be determined
and a worth wh1le solut1on effected The solut1on
must be based upon stra1ght thmkmg and w1th a
reallzatlon that true progress IS the result of work

The boys and g1rls who benef1t dlrectly today are
the ones to assume leadershlp and respons1b1l1ty
tomorrow and only steadfast co operatlon on our
part can real1ze the promlses of yesterday and help
to prepare these c1t1zens of tomorrow to the end
that they too may go forward to an age of ln

When Coach Keppler 'xrrnorrnced the Interclass Basketball Tournament rn the fall
of 1929 the response was rmmedrate and the classes began trarnrng therr teams with a
greater enthusrasm than had been dex eloped before rn the annals of rnterclass basketball
A new feature of tlns rears tournament was that basketball letter men were barred
from plawrng on a class team and thus new plaxers were drscoxered for the school team
as a result of thrs rulrng The games were enlrrened bt large attendance and great en
thusrasm on the part of the entrre student b dx and each team had an enthusrastrc class
rootrng sectron at rts back rn uerx game 'Ilre Jumors were the farorrtes to wrn the tour
nament but the dope bucket was upset The students learned that the Freshmen knew
a thrng or two about basketball when the Frosh led br therr flashs captarn Guy Corta
rode through the Junrors to the tune of a nrne to four score
The Frosh won all of therr games from then on untrl ther met the Sophomores who
had so far been unable to wrn a game The Sophomores surprrsed everyone by defeating
the Frosh fourteen to tlrnteen Thrs 'eft the Senrors and Frosh tred for frrst place in
the tournament standrngs and he supremaex was deerded the next nrght rn a thrrllrng
game that was carrred oter fo two extra perrods and ended fue to four rn favor of the
determrned Freshnrerr fue Although Freshmen classes are usuallw handrcapped by rn
experrence thrs class of 1933 showed that ther were crnrble of developrng rnto a real
basketball team The Frosh showed themseltes to be endowed wlth a natural abrhty to
play basketball and thrs abrlrtx along wrtlr tlserr rndonrrt xble w ll to wrn carrred them to
the top rn the tournament
students Let us hope that the same sprrrt wrll be efrrrred or er rn xerrs to COITAC A record
