Yearbook - what's it all about? Working hard, laughing hard and praying hard
that things will finally get done fright, Mr. Mahaffy?3
Working on thc Yearbook can be most enjoyable if you like to look at pictures
of people, happenings, trophys, etc., to put them together on a page and then write
an article to tie the pages all together. lt is a definite challenge - but one that can
bc met many different ways. Each individual puts a little of themselves in the pages
they create - which is why the pages are so different in style and content.
Being a member of the Yearbook Staff means putting in a lot of time and hard
work but we feel it is well worth the effort, We have tried to preserve the memories
of 1976 for you in this yearbook - we think we've done a pretty good job!

In the fall we heard the band outside practi-
cing marching and playing their instruments for
the football half-time shows. At first it was just
"forward march. . . Keep those lines straight. . .
knees up-toes pointed. . . " Then some of our
favorite songs were sounded as the band played.
The half-time shows were very goodqthey danced
to "Smoke on the Water"j and at times quite
amusing. Qlflalloween night the band members
and the conductor dressed up in costumesj.
The concerts were equally as good. There
may have been a few problems with a couple of
pieces but the audience never knew. QI was told
that once half the band got lost but struggled on
and came together in the end. The audience
didn't even know it.y
A great job band members, and thanks to
Mrs. Betty Foust, the new band conductor. We ex
pect even more next year because we're sure
we'1l get it.

Something new. Something different. 3
But definitely something here to stay.
This band consists of only trumpets,
saxes, trombones, basses, and percus-
sion which produces an entirely different
sound than our concert band.
It is an event worth noting when the
stage band performs-the students have
worked hard at perfecting the music but
the differentiating factor is that ALL en-
joy playing their music. Only those who
truely love to play and willing to work
at their music would turn out to weekly
night sessions. This is evident in their
playing.
Since we've already given them
plenty of applause at their concerts let's
give them a big Thanks-keep it up,
Stage Band.

"Yes, Greg, the Pope is Catholic. " "Plan, what
plan?" "But Jer, l'm telling you, the evidence card
monster came into my room and I begged him 'any-
thing but my evidence cards' but he ate every single
one of them right in front of me. lt was pure torture! "
"But what's a stock issue?" "What do you mean you've
got a headache!" "But why can't you end rebuttals
with 'That's all"?" "l still don't see why we can't list-
en to records. "
These were some of the things heard in this year's
Debate class. Although the people in Debate had a
good time fexcept when they had to work so hardy they
missed going to the State Finals by only one point.

What is 4+6 qForensi csp ? Public speaking? A lot of fun?
New people? Cute guys fand girlsj. Great experience? A little
work? WRONG. lT'S TEN.
No, seriously it is fun, and we really had a BLAST. Six
people competed at the district level from our team. Bonnie
Julin and John Cardella competed in Radio Broadcasting. Janna
. Hockstad and Laura Wonacott competed in Humorous Reading.
Jill Chaloner and Anne Greer competed in Serious Reading. Jill
and Anne both went to Ann Arbor for the State Finals.
We really had a great coach and a great time.

Look at all these "handsome" guys-all
those sweet smiles. You know the saying,
"Looks aren't everything. ", well that may be
but with our guys we had everything. Besides
their good looks they were great football
players and extremely tough to defeat. They
played football with the ease of elephants
gtgmpinggn daisies, The elephants were chased
from the field once but returned to stomp
again.
Great work Elks-our stomping record of
7-1 is TERRIFIC.

There is a cheer which starts off saying,
"Team gets beat and there you are, You've
got to pick yourself up , , ," Well, OUR
team didn't have to heed this cheer since
OUR team didn't get beat--not once. We-
've proved we're the best--after all, we are
the ELKS! Yea team--your 4-0 record

Girls Varsity Basketball consists of the best basketball
players in the school - it sure seems strange though that
they're all girls! Many boys tried out for the team, but
keeping up with the girls proved to be too difficult - besides,
who likes sitting on the bench??!! This isn't actually ALL
true, but both Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams go
through rigorous training and equally tough seasons.
The team members voted Karen Norton as the Most
Valuable Player, and Marcia Sgriccia as the Most improv-
ed Player. Mary Glowicki and Barb Lundy were honored
very highly as they were chosen for All-Conference Team,
and Karen Norton and Tracey McCauley received Honor-
able Mention. The G,V,T, showed that the running,
jumping, and just plain Grueling workouts each day were
worth it - they went on to win the Conference Champ-
ionship. Their record was indeed astounding, for they
only lost 1 game!

He misses the ball! Scowll scowll He swings again. He

What does the word wrestling bring to your mind?
Two boys rolling on the grass trying to "beat" the other
one? Two fat men in a ring with Big Time Wrestling
flashing on the screen? Or two equally matched young
men on a mat testing their technique with their team-
mates cheering them on to victory?
Cf the three descriptions, the latter is the most
accurate representation of High Schoolxwrestling. Each
grappler must work hard to develop his technique, to
be a crafty thinker in tough situations, and to be phy-
sically tuned and able to perform his tasks.
Special recognition this year goes to two wrest-
lers who did extremely well. Jim Veliquette finished
with a 17-4 record overall and was a District quali -
fier. Senior John Banwell set the pace for the team as
he compiled a fine 23-3 record, while placing seventh
in the State tournament. John completes his career at
E. R. with an outstanding three year record of 63-9 -l.
A special thanks to the Seniors: Eric MacLeod,
Mike Fegan, and John Banwell who have worked hard
for three years as Elk Rapids wrestlers.

Baseball-fbas bolj a ga me played with bat and ball by two teams of
nine players each on a field with four bases. This is the dictionary's de-
finition ofbaseball but it surely isn't all that makes up a baseball game.
lt takes the tense excitement of each player striving to do his best, the
coach's encouragement, the roar of the crowd, and the hits and homeruns
and. . .the bad calls, the booing of the crowd, splinters in the pants, and
the misses and complete strike-outs.
We had our share of winning this season-we are "the champs". We
may have had a few misses and maybe even a few splinters but we pulled
through-as the best. Congratulations Northwest Conference Winners!

CLASS PROPHECY
In a plush bedroom of his mansion Mr. Thibert lies awake even though his alarm is
not set to go off for a couple of hours yet. He can't get back to sleep because he is excited
about today's activities. The Elk Rapids graduating class of 1976 is honoring his 75th birth-
day with a class reunion at the Sip Sc Bite, now ow ned by Mary Vasquez.
As he lies there thinking of the good old days back at Elk Rapids, he realizes what a
long way he's come since then. It all started when he quit teaching back in 1977. School
just wasn't the same without the class of "76" so he resigned and invested his money into
his favorite sport, hockey. He bought some land from land -tycoon Eric Hendrickson and
built Icicle Dome and gave Ron Dahl and Scott Whiteford a job running the place. He also
put Dave Bosner and Tim Powell to work sweeping the place out.
The local hockey team, the E. R. Rivers, had an undefeated first year, thanks to the
fine playing of Greg Weinzappel and Carl Lake. Unfortunately, Carl had to quit after his
first year to go to Alaska with Dave Lundy and Ron Sobbry.
Yessir, there were some big things that took place in Icicle Dome. Take the time dare-
devil Bill Mielke jumped over 12 of Mark Oatley's trucks. Or the time the famous rock
group "NESS, " featuring lead singer and guitar player Dan Coats, packed the Dome but
couldn't appear because of technical difficulties. There was almost a riot but thanks to the
gallant efforts of police officers Steve Bratschi, Rick Hirt and Allen Myers, order was main-
tained.
Mr. Thibert is snapped from his reminiscing by the sound of Larry Couturier and Mark
Bauer, co -Dis on WERM. They're introducing Jenny Williams' new hit, a guitar instrument-
al.
There's a knock on the'door and Kathy Greiner, Mr. Thibert's maid, enters with his
breakfast. Each morning he has the same thing, eggs from Greg Tulpa's Farm and Rice
Krispies with peaches on top. The peaches are from Nagy's, picked fresh by Iill every
morning. Over the cerealihe pours fresh milk from Neva Veliquette's dairy farm.
After breakfast Mr. Thibert buzzes for his secretary, Bernie Reilly, and asks that his
chauffeur, Gary Smith, bring his car around and pick him up. As he dresses in his best suit,
custom tailored by Carrie Revitzer and Sarah Schlagel, he thinks about how good it will be
to see the old class again. Many have become quite famous. Jim Holcomb, author of "How
I Remember Patton, " is going to be one of tonight's speakers along with Laurie Whiteford,
who is now a Millionaire because of her miracle freckle removing cream.
Some of the other famous people expected at tonights activities are boxer Gary Pierce,
now heavy weight champion of the world, baseball star A1 Vasquez, 14 time all-star pitch-
er, broadway actress Bonnie Iulin, and Tammie McLain, personal secretary to the Presi-
dent of the United States.
As Mr. Thibert leaves his house hisibutler, Doug Marker, hands him the mail just de-
livered by Post Woman Mary Kinney. The first letter is from Don Marker. Unfortunately,
Don won't be able to make the reunion because he's just sprained his ankle and Doctor Dave
Moody says no traveling. Too bad too, so soon after winning the mile in the Olympics. The
next letter is a bill from Orthodontist Mike Merchant, followed by a post card from world
travelers Chris Galligan and Sue Kerkhof, and a bill from the Ashley Brothers for painting
the house. The last letter is an invitation to a party Kathy Lobb, Sue Hefron, Connie Con-
verse, and Holly Gotts are having. It seems like those four are always having a party.
As the limousine rolls along the streets of Elk Rapids, it passes Boals, Holbrook,
Greiner, and Davis, Incorporated, one of the nation's leading manufacturers of athletic
supporters. No wonder, it's Presidents Tim Boals, Jeff Holbrook, Mark Greiner, and Bob
Davis, they're old jocks themselves. Looks like a new building going up in Elk Rapids. A
super-modern hospital to be built by John Banwell Construction, where Debbei Stites will
be the head nurse., Right next door will be the new pharmacy, one more of Linda White's
nation-wide chains. This one is going to be managed by Banwell's wife, Lorri Hatch, Dar-
lyn Lane, and Val McClintock will be working there too.
The limousine has to stop to let Tim Galligan's train pass. Seems he's now driving
trains instead of hitting them. As they drive by motorcycle cop, Eric MacLeod they beep
the horn. Oh, oh, it looks like Mike Hockstad's car they're searching.
Well, finally Mr. Thibert arrives at the reunion. He tells the chauffeur to get gas
while he's inside. Today's Tuesday, so the chauffeur goes to Flagship Auto Service which
is managed by Bob Buchholz, Dennis Redman, and John Newhouse. He usually gets gas at
Riverside Collision from Ken Hollenbeck, but on Tuesday Flagship has the special.
After getting gas the chauffeur stops for a pack of cigarettes at A 8a L Village Market.
He pays Karen Dillon, the check out girl then has carry-out Gary Wilson take them out to
the car. He has a few hours to kill until he picks up Mr. Thibert so he drives down to' the
harbor to watch the boats. There's famous water skier Jim Nichols putting on a water show.
Farther out the submarines are bringing in Navy officers Lenny LaLone and Mike Fegan. Over
on the dock is Colleen Clark waiting for the marines. Meter maid Eleanor Finch reminds
the chauffeur that he must pay for parking. So, as he decides to cruise downtown he passes
Nancy Haller's Bank, First National of Elk Rapids, where Catherine Bechill and Marge
Downey work as tellers. Right next door is Pattie Norton and Sandy Powell's bar, the New-
Aces.
lt's finally time to pick up Mr. Thibert so the chauffeur drives back to the Sip 85 Bite.
On the way there he drives over the new suspension bridge built by engineer Jon Anderson
where he passes Barry Cole on his way back to California.
Mr. Thibert is very happy and on the way home he talks about the reunion. lt seems
the food was all provided by class members. Bill White donated the beef while Arlen Hol-
lenbeck donated all the apples the class could eat. Journalist Beth Anderson promised to
give the reunion a big front-page write up in her paper. Entertainment was furnished by
Betsie Shumsky and Nancy Loper, who performed a Pom Pon routine while the brother and
sister singing team of Jenny and Jerry Orr performed a medley of their hit songs.
There was complete attendance except for Jon Rust who couldn't leave his mission in
New Guina and Steve Shockley who is skiing in Colorado. Oh, and Marie Bussa wasn't able
to make it either. Seems Marie is busy working in Disneyland impersonating Mickey Mouse.
Yessir, it was a great 75th birthday for Mr. Thibert. He can hardly wait to do it
again.
