DRAMATHCS
The Dramatic Arts Club, a member of the National Thespian Society, Troupe
658, has striven to make this year an outstanding one in our dramatic activities.
It is sponsored by Sr. Rose, without whose untiring efforts our club could never
be the success it is today. A contributing factor in the success of our big play was
Mr. Demchak, who volunteered to manage the lighting and staging and helped
in the directing.
This year we can boast of the largest number of members our club has ever
had, a total of one hundred seventeen. At the first meeting in September, the
senior members elected the following officers: President, Jane Lambert, Vice Presi-
dent, William Clancy, Secretary, Jerome Steele, and treasurer, Carleen Straub.
For our three-act play, an annual event, we selected "Sittin' Pretty," a farce com-
edy which was a tremendous success. Practice was commenced October 3, and
hard work is not an apt description of what took place during the day that fol-
lowed. On November 20, a matinee was given for the grade pupils and the nuns,
and two more evening performances were held the following days for the general
public. Many favorable comments were received.
"You don't belong to me" was staged for the Family Association of our school,
December ll, and this gave the parents and faculty an opportunity to view our
accomplishments. The cast did an exceptional job on this play and everyone thor-
oughly enioyed it. Next, a Christmas operetta was presented twice for the school,
most of the players being freshmen and they can well be proud of the good
performance, their first opportunity to act.
The Dramatic club has many plans for the future including the annual state
regional conference to be held this year at Ambridge, Pa. 20th of April and in
June the big event, the Sixth National Dramatic Arts Conference at indiana Uni-
versity, Bloomington, Indiana. Nineteen members plan to attend. These confer-
ences will conduct various workshops where the students may become educated
in some of the arts of playsuacting, staging, and even helpful hints on prompting.
The students are given an opportunity to witness plays presented by other stu-
dents as well as to participate in any of the workshops. Many more plays and
entertainments are being planned for special occasions.
Four members have achieved four gold stars which entitles them to Honor
Thespians: outstanding performances, William Clancy and Andrew Marconi, per-
formances and ever-ready assistance in every department, Jane Lambert, humble
work of managing and back-stage work John Gump. Ignatius Schaut, who took
a great interest in improving our stage lighting, is an Honorary Thespian member.
Artists who deserve honorable mention for Art work are Verna Gerber and Donald
Magistrelli.

The Central Crusaders produced a fine team this year in spite of losing its first
four men. Coach Tom Bebble took over Varsity and George Bauer, the J. V.'s.
Nine out of 10 league games was a very good average. The Church Street boys
had their only defeat in league play at Clearfield, losing by 10 points. Their overall
wins were 16, losses 5, the latter being to Johnstown, Clearfield, Oil City and
St. Vincent.
ln the scoring department Tub Hasselman took honors with 353 points to his
credit. Following him were Rene Nicklas with 290, Sonny.Lenze, 167, Dick
Straub, 123.
The Crusaders were tied with Clearfield for the Eastern section of the Diocese,
each losing one game to the other. The score in the playoff with them, March 1,
at DuBois, was 44-40 in our favor. The first game of the playoffs with the West-
ern part of the Diocese at Greenville, March 3, gave St. Michael's the advantage,
59 to 76. As this must go to press, the results of the second game, March 6, at
the Gym, cannot be given.
The Junior Varsity had a successful season also, 16 wins, 3 defeats. In scoring,
Don Sain tallied 222, Jake Meyer, 131, Karl Wegemer, 115.
Captain Bill Clancy, Coach Tom Bebble, Athletic Director Father Donald, J. V. Coach
George Bauer, J. V. Captain Don Sain.
