lag!! lo Ifiglll: James Ney, llenry Hitz. I. Seott llamor, Blaine Stephens, liiehard Laudenslager, l.eslie lireider, Marvin Shaud, William Helm, Glenn Miller, Robert ltaffensperger. eam keacfy - - -gf! .Yet - - ne, ufo. ln all probability, not, one person notieed the exeitement in the high sehool loeker room, about a week before sehool opened in September. 'l'his exeitement was that llll2lI'lHllS roar eaused by the football eandidates eoming out for their first praetiee ot' the season. Oh! what groans some ot' them lnade when the first exereise drill was over. 'I'hey felt as it' they should go home to bed. liooking over the squad as a whole, we find that only five varsity men from the previous gridiron yeal' were baek in their uniforms: the rest had graduated. Ut eourse our two mainstays, Whitey and Raffee. were in their baekfield positions, with llitx alternating between end and baekfiehl, while Ney and Seip held the hne. 'l'his year our team was fortunate in reeeiving new uniforms, having a eolor eombination ot' blue and white instead ol' the traditional blue and orange. liut at this point the team was disappointed when they learned that the unitorms would not eome until about the middle ofthe season beeause ol' war produetion. During this interval the praetiee uniforms were used. Hy the time our first game ol' the season eame around on September 15, the boys were eager to get in there and fight, espeeially the sophomores, who were to play their fn'st varsity football game. But the toe wlueh we were gomg to eneounter was strong. llaving won the Berks County ehampionship the previous year, Shillmgton had trained its underelassmen and still had a stron team. As the fame was in ro ress, Slullin fton proved to have a mowerful , . . 5 lf . . 5' V - team, but the lu-town st uad held its own until the verv end. althou fh blulhn ton was able to si-ore in the first seeond, D ' ' ' 1 ! and last quarters, making the eount I9-0 in their favor. 'I'he next. game was slated for September 22 with Columbia on its own field under the lights. With one loss on its baek, li-town was eager to make up for it by taekling Columbia. Kiekoff time was 8:30 P. NI. with Columbia reeeiving. On the seeond play ot' the game Von Stetten seored twiee for Columbia. and it wasn't long until lireiser seored twiee. 'l'hen IC-town started to eliek with Raffee and Whitey seoring. Later, Columbia put the ball over again, and li-town threatened to seore twiee when they were deep in Columbia territory. The final outeome ol' the game was 25 I2, with Columbia taking the honors. Un September 30, the team returned to its home field with Biglerville the opponent. Whitey had had a slight attaek of pneumonia the night before the game and did not play. This proved serious for li-town's makeshift baek- fiehl whieh fought valiantly throughout the game. RafTee seored onee, but liiglerville went away with the st-ore 31 ti in its favor. l.ititz was next on our sehedule with the game being played on its field. Whitey was baek in the game again and the team fought hard, but Lititz was able to hold IC-town 27-f0. The sei-ond home game was played Uetober 14 with lted Lion. lied Lion reeeived some hu-ky breaks in this eneounter when they reeovered fumbles by li-town. During the game disaster st ruek when lioodhng had his ankle broken. lted l.ion seored five tunes during tlns game, wlule the lille held as statmehly as it eould. lted liltlll won with the final seore of .il 0. lffgflflrffrl .W 'J' Q R11
