Literary Work
We do not outgrow literature as we outgrow the scientific
knowledge of past generations. Whether it was written yester-
day or a thousand years ago, literature is an expression of the
changeless soul of man. Contemporary literature should End an
important place in the course of study, but not as a dessert. Nei-
ther the course that stops with Browning nor the course that be-
gins with Kipling can meet the requirements.
Sir John Herschel said, "Give a man this taste for good
books 'and the means of gratifying it, and you can hardly fail of
making Aa happy man. You place him in contact with the best
society in every period of history--with the wisest, the wittiest,
the tenderest, the bravest, and the purest characters who have
adorned humanity. You make him a denizen of all nations, a
contemporary of all ages."

I ' The Cyclones opened the season with Crossnore, here October 4, they suc- i ,
. ceeded in defeating this North Carolina team 38-0. Many substitutes were used. . 4
as It was a warm and sunny afternoon, October 11, at Elizabethton that Erwin 929.
' ' , journeyed forth to defeat us 7-6. An intercepted pass that resulted in a touch- . 1
f 1 down for Erwin proved to be our sorrow. Erwin was outplayed. . V'
'Qi On October 18, the Cyclones brought back a victory from Greeneville, a score '74
. X' of 13-0. '
Y... At Banners Elk, October 25, the Cyclones were defeated 7-6. Three of our . . ,
,L regular men were out of this game. Our boys were probably afflicted by the at-
mosphere, which was very cold.
,' A scoreless tie 0-0 was the result of the Cyclone-Tennessee High game '.
QM November, 1, on the home field. The greater part of the game was played in the
it 1 middle of the field. We were at their twelve yard line once but they were never p .
'P 2 I that close. It was an exciting game and the teams were evenly matched. 9 5 0 - '

Review of Season, Girls' Basketball Q,
'ae
The "Betsy Flashers" season started the first of December. The season started with the X V
chances of 'a good team being very few. Last year we lost our three forwards and one of gy' 1.
our best guards who was elected captain for the team of '30. E
The players who saw service last year met and elected Elsie Hyder, Captain and Ruth J,
Edens, manager. It did not take Coach Brummit long to learn that she had some promising M53
material from last years squad and some new ones, also. 1
x49
, The first two games were lost to Jacksboro and Catola which were played before Christ- ' A
mas.
so.
The starting line-up was generally Hyder, Scott and R. MacMillan as forwards and li
Vanhuss, Meredith, and G. MacMillan as guards. But Ellis, Shields and Edens as forwards "ff '
and Woods and Crumley as guards saw service in almost every game. X9
The only game lost after Christmas was at Tennessee Hi by a two point margin. It was L '
in the Tennessee Hi game on the home court that the Flashers proved to the public that they 7'
could really play basketball, winning that game 44 to 11 and exhibiting a brand of basketball lv,
never seen before in the local gym. W 3
For the fourth consecutive year the "Flashers" won the sectional Tournament at the Q '
East Tennessee State Teachers College. Four games were played all of them being very , I
close-the Boones Creek game was only won by one point after an extra three minutes period, as
the Doak game by ten points and the other two by two points each. 'The girls received a . 5
Silver Loving Cup and individual gold basketballs. -' fa
The "l?lashers" determined not to be beaten by Oliver Springs, in the Division Tourna- f f,
ment at Lenior City went in and won the Consolation Tournament by beating Morristown and , e
Central High of Chattanooga. They won their second trophy of the season.
At the end of the season the squad met and elected Grace MacMillan, Captain and Marie 1'
Scott, Alternate Captain. - 5
There are not many who have realized what Coach Brumit has done for the "Flashers" '
this year. She started with almost an entire new squad and she had to change the position of u
some. -.
The "Flashers" for 1931 have better prospects than they have ever had before, for they A7 H
loose only one regular, Captain Hyder. The future of our girls team is great for this year's
squad is largely Freshman and Sophomores. , .
