The years that we have spent on the campus have been years of happiness-whether in class or on campus. For many of us this has been the final year; for others there are years to come, but whether this has been a first year or a last year, it has been an important year in our lives. The year of 1959-60 has been a year of growth — intellectual, physical, social and spiritual. All phases of college life have played an important part in this growth. Although it is impossible to pay tribute to all who have con- tributed to this growth, may we pause to pay special tribute to those who marked each individ- ual ' s personality with unlimited efforts and dedicated service. Through their patience, guid- ance, understanding, devotion, friendliness and loyalty our teachers have played a significant role in our development. The effectiveness of teaching is not in name or through praise, but in the lives of others; therefore to our teachers we give our appreci- ation and gratitude. With much work alternated with pleasure the staff presents to you this 1960 " Pirate. " May it keep fresh the memories of years spent at Elizabeth City State Teachers College. Mr. Taylor S. Jackson Dedication " IN HONOR OF MR. TAYLOR S. JACKSON To a man who has set wonderful examples to all who have been under his leader- ship or associated with him in anyway; to one whose qualities of friendliness, loy- alty, and understanding have won for him a place of high respect; and to whom both students and faculty look with deep admiration, warm affection, and ap- preciation for his service as a teacher and friend, we dedicate this, the 1960 " Pirate. " Curtis Bryan, Rose Cherry, Mr. Jackson, Pauline Carney and Odgen Leon Fidde Alma Mater To thee State Teachers College, A tribute song we sing, Of thy true worth to all of us — O may we honor bring. Refrain : Hail to thy lovely halls, Dear S.T.C. We ' ll hear when duty calls Dear S.T.C. Faithful and ever true We ' ll be to you, For in our hearts we still love thee. Dear S.T.C. So now we ' ll join together For S.T.C. to work, Let none of us be faint at heart Nor any duty shirk. w Administration WW Dr. Walter N. Ridley President Mrs. A. M. Newby Secretary to the President Senior Message We the members of the class of 1960, are leaving Elizabeth City- State Teachers College to go out into the world to assume many different roles in society. As we leave we take with us, memories of many experiences. Among these memories, Dr. Ridley, are the ones that we have of you and the outstanding accomplishments you have spearheaded since you came to us in September, 1958. We will always be guided by what seems to be your motto: " Ac- cent on excellence; down with mediocrity. " I THE PRESIDENT ' S FAMILY — The Members are: Don Leroy, Dr. and Mrs. W. N. Rid- ley and Yolanda. Vfc- To 1 To The Seniors : It is satisfying to note that this Yearbook, the first in several years at our college, is being pro- duced. Congratulations on this fact! May the Class of 1960 excel in all things and show that they can and will do well in life. On behalf of the staff and students, I extend to you greetings and best wishes. May you translate your knowledge into service and your competencies into the production of good for the communities into which you go and the world in which we live. Most of all, please know that our interest, our hopes and our blessings go with you through the years. Never let a year pass during which you fail to write to us and visit your Alma Mater.
