I know I left in a hurry, but God called me from somewhere. He asked me if I'd take a voyage, a voyage to go up there. I didn't have time to say good-bye to family or to friends. Forgive me, but my Master said, "Thy voyage must now begin." I'll be waiting to see all of you as time comes to an end. It will be whenever your work is done, and only my Master knows when. I've only one favor to ask of you, which is really easy to do. Please don't weep or cry for me, cause my voyage will soon be through. I know it's a long hard journey; many, many miles away. But my Master has already told me, He'd be with me all the way. by Barbara Overton 56Sophomore Treasurer Mary Sanders President Frank Boyce Vice-President Gayle McPherson S 0 Melvin Armstrong P Viola Baum Michael Aydlett h Richard Beals 0 w Fred Ayres 0 Robert Beals James Banks r Wayne Becker c Officers Secretary Pattie ForbesElaine Belangia C. Under the supervision of an excellent director and many capable officers, the band operates in a military manner and observes rules of discipline. This year the band participated in the football games and pep rallies. Among other 96Ray Twiddy Captain and Drum Major Anne Moore Head Majorette appearances, were several Christmas parades, the Wright Memorial celebration, the Oyster Bowl game, and a trip to Richmond for the Tobacco Bowl parade. JACKETS CAPTURE STATE AA FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The Jackets warmed up for the regular season's conference games by defeating Roxboro and the Chowan Jayvees in true football style. Their first conference game was with Washington. This was to be a tough one because Washington was the conference champion of the previous year and the only team to defect the Jackets in that year by a score of 20 to 6. The Jackets dug hard and struck pay dirt, this time to turn the tables and defeot Washington 20 to 6. With this one under their belt, the Jackets fought even harder and whipped Roanoke Rapids with a powerful 33 to 14. The Jackets were given the International Cup Regatta Trophy for a year. Edenton fell under the mighty arms of the Jackets losing 32 to 12. After the game the Jackets received the Doily Advance Trophy. For the annual homecoming the Jackets again put on an excellent performance by defeating Greenville 40 to 6. The Jackets had the ball rolling and were gaining momentum with every step. Kinston fell under the Jackets mighty trod by a score of 20 to 7. The next prey for the Jackets was New Bern whom the Jackets defeated 20 to 13. The Jackets ball was rolling even faster now. Hertford was the next of the Jackets' victim and was defeated 34 to 1 8. Thus, with a perfect season the Jackets, os conference champions, went into the playoffs with the Northeastern Conference Trophy. The first playoff was with the well-trained and heavier Henderson Bulldogs. The two mighty teams met on Memorial Field for what was going to be a head-on struggle, but the Jackets began to fight. In four plays the Jackets had their first score and at the half led by a score of 1 4 to 6. The second half found the Jackets working even harder, as they scored twice, ond walked off with a 27 to 6 victory. The Jackets were really rolling now. They not only had the students behind them, but the whole town. Everybody was pushing them on to victory. Next, the Jackets met the mighty Roxboro eleven at Kinston, a neutral field. With many loyal supporters watching, the Jackets went into action. This was their toughest yet. It seemed the harder they fought, the harder Roxboro fought. The game ended in a 6 to 6 mighty struggle; but when the total number of yards gained by each team was added up, the Jackets were again on top, having a total of 284 yards gained to the Roxboro 1 82. With this victory under their belt, the Jackets were ready for the big one—the final state play-off. Elizabeth City's Memorial Field, November 30, 1957—This will be a long remembered night in the annals of Elizabeth City. For on this night the mighty Elizabeth City Yellow Jackets met the mighty Myers Park Mustangs for the East-West AA Championship play-off. The Jackets were rolling with the entire eastern part of North Carolina behind them. The two teams fought hard and dug deep the entire first half and left the field at half time with a 6 to 6 tie before them. As the second half began, tension was mounting everywhere. Something had to give, and it did. The Jackets were out in front 12 to 6. However, the Mustangs came right back to score and made the all important extra point which put them out in front 13 to 12. The Jackets were in trouble, but they continued to work and came up with an 1 8 to 13 lead. Now, with little time left, the Mustangs moved to the Jackets' second yard line. The Jackets were in trouble again, but with teamwork they held the Mustangs. The Jackets were caught for a safety which gave the Mustangs two more points. The clock ran out fast, and the Jackets were left with an 18 to 15 victory and the State AA Championship Trophy. 114Front row, left to right: John Rogers, Goyle Kovonough, Lorry Freeman, John Mahaffey, Joseph Sawyer, Jack Boyer.
