THE IELDERADO As the success, stability and integrity of any organization depends on those in charge, so also the success of any High School annual depends upon the ability of its Editor, and, in general, its entire staff. In this respect the Elderado has been most fortunate in having Phil Selmer to fill the most important post of Editor-in-Chief. whose efforts were au fmented b an efficient coo erative and com etent staff. . 5 Y ' P P In this yearbook, the Elderado has carried out certain definite policies, which have aligned with the marked progress of the other departments of the school. Every year there is an improvement in aviation, automobiles, medicine, etc., and the Elderado staff has tried to make this year no exception in re- gard to progress. The capable and incessant efforts of our moderators, Father Sicking, Father Lawrence and Father Ziegler, have insured another magnificent annual for Elder's students. ,iw 7 2446 The staff, working quietly and efficiently behind the scenes and after school, have contributed much toward the present high standings of the Elderado. Of course, we must not forget the "school life" pictures we see throughout this yearbook. This was done by the moderator of the Camera Club, Mr. Kuley, and his assistant, jack Stevens. Without their knowledge of photography, certainly most of the pictures in this book would not have been taken. We, the staff of this annual, are proud to place this yearbook in the hands of Elder students. The Editor and staff. 1 FATHERS Ziegler, Lawrence, Sicking and Mr. Kuley 'Me J. Brogan, D. Brunner, L. The Elder Student Council has for many years been affiliated with the National Association of Student Councils, Although its function here at Elder differs from that of other councils elsewhere, the same over-all purpose and results are achieved. Our student council does not share in school administration or in disciplinary problems. lt is a free association of interested students, who discuss school activities, arrange a calendar of school events, sponsor and supervise these events, and try to assure complete student coverage and attendance at all school activities. The Council is responsible for "school spirit" and in its capacity as a sounding-board for student opinion has proved fairly success- ful in building up close cooperation between faculty and students and between the various organized student activities. Senior officers were chosen from those students most active and cooperative in previous years, They rose to the challenge of a crowded schedule and a crowded school and gave the student body a very succesful schedule, carried out in complete harmony. Our school spirit is something intangible One recognizes its presence or its absence more by results than by anything else. The Student Council, all of whose members belong to other school activities, have done yoeman service again this year in keeping Elders spirit high! The Band travels as a group to all the games, and is always on hand to play for the special events of the school and student body including Welfare Association meetings and alumni Homecomings. The Band averages about fifty members and in the spring joins with the Glee Club in a concert which has become a very enjoyable and interesting yearly activity. Martini, T. Roehrig, T. Geckle. .fddmfzdcma Possibly the most venerable student activity at Elder is the Glee Club. Under the direction of Professor J. Alfred Schehl, with Father Paul Gruber as moderator, the Glee Club of this year matched the standards of previous years. Of all activities, this one is the most fondly remembered by the graduates. The pleasures of singing together, the camaraderie engendered by two years of rehearsals do much to bind the students to the school. Even after graduation, they remember the Glee Club and what they learned there so pleasantly. The high spot of the year is the annual combined concert of the Glee Club and the Band, which was held this year at Seton Auditorium in April. An appreciative crowd heard once again its old favorites and the newer, more modern numbers, pre- sented by this group of 45 voices. The Glee Club is restricted to members of the Junior and Senior classes and embodies the true spirit of working and singing together. As a result its membership overlaps the various activities, chiefly dramatics. If we give credit to the students who plan, even more credit should be given to these students of all four classes at Elder who do the background work, the hard work of making a school year successful. Posters, props, gags, and stunts . . . these are the raw material with which the Activity Group carries out its program. All of its work takes place after school hours, usually in the evenings. Its members provide not just ideas but the muscle-power and time necessary to get the entire student body to follow the programs of the school. Among the most successful activities this year were the Annual Pow-Wow before the Elder-Western Hills game, and the junior- Senior Prom. The vast amount of work required to make activities successful can be appreciated not by those who have done it. Hats off to an Activity Group that really did its Best! The Science Club are an interesting group of boys of the new atomic nge and try- ing all the experiments of present day science. On September 27, 1955, Father Huit- ink's twenty-six "test tube busters" held their first meeting. Thomas Scheidt was elected President, Leroy Humpert as Secretary and Father Huitink elected himself, Treasurer. Each Tuesday afternoon, after school the members of the Chemistry Club meet in Room 30. A talk was given by one of the members each week tak- ing into consideration some element of chemistry or science. After the talk a discussion was held and any business of the week taken up. When the meet- ing was closed the boys went to the Chemistry Lab where they put into practice what they preached. Ten cent dues were collected from each member at every meeting, which went toward a picnic at LaSourdsville Lake at the close of the year. During the course of the year, under the capable guidance of Father Huitink, the Chem- istry Club went on field trips to the Cincinnati Water works, Proctor and Gamble, and the Quehl Sign Company. Though you may think of chemistry as just another High School subject, it provides a greater opportunity to under- stand a little better the magnificent power of God. 1 1 U DRAMATICS ----- sEN1oRs l'lRS'l RKJW: Mormile, Grupenhoff, Heisel, Mullen, Egan, Janszen, T., Doherty, Bywater, Yockey. Students from all four years of high school can be members of this organization and membership is on a purely voluntary basis. All that is required is an interest in the club program and enough time to attend the inevitable rehearsals. Membership this year was eighty-one, with most members coming from the Scnior class. The Club is not only interested in play production and drama as such, but also is very active in all other student activities. ln cooperation with the Student Activity committee, the Drama Club has decorated for all student dances, prepared the gym for the annual student's retreat, provided entertain- ment at various dances and affairs, contrived the peplcasts for the athletic contests, and decorated the school grounds for the Iilder's May Festival. The Drama Club is almost unique among organi- zations of its kind in Cincinnati, in that it builds all its own scenery, makes a number of the costumes required for various plays and rallies, and does all this without benefit of outside help and usually after school hours. Four full length plays were presented for the public this year. The first play, "Time Out for Ginger," was presented in St. Willizttns Auditorium to appreciative audiences. The girls' parts were taken by senior members of Seton's Dramatic Club. This sparkling Broadway success was a good start for an outstanding year. "Career Angel" was the second play, and was given at St. Catherine's Auditorium, just before Christmas. The all-male cast grappled successfully with this comedy about a saintly brother in religious life, who not only saw his guardian angel but spoke with him, and thereby saved an orphanage from destruction. The next play was "Curtain Going Up," a comedy, notable chiefly for its unusual staging. No scenery was usedg various actors took part in the play. while seated among the audience, entrances and staging were effected as though no audience were present. This unusual ap- proach made "Curtain Going Up" one of the most popular plays presented in recent years. It was given in conjunction with Seton at Seton Auditorium. ln all schools, the Spring Play is usually the major effort of the year. This is true at Elder. "Creeping Shadows," a mystery-comedy was presented with the Mercy Players, at Mercy Auditorium, April 29 and 30th. All available Senior members of both schools had parts in this play, which was also their swan-song to High School Dramatics. Several one-act plays were given by th under- classmen. This big program is made possible by the great interest and cooperation of the club members, who in this, and in all other activities, really exeinpli- fy school spirit. Henman P' ' Dfw: ' 4 ROXX! All parents of our student body automatically are members of the Association when we register at school, and it is their financial help and the meetings with our teachers and the excellent cooperation between faculty and parent that affords us so many fine improvements, in the classrooms and buildings. The family-teacher relationship of knowing what we are doing at school and at home to better every one of our lives. lt is this hand-in-hand of parent-instructor student working and praying together that makes our school and its endeavors a great tribute to our future! 5 Y 1 LS 2 0 l e? in 2-fX Pauline Blymyer Florence Raeckers "Murph" "Maise" Half" arf! The team is under the guidance of Mr. Donald Ruberg, who guided the Elder team of 1955 to the Class "A" Championship. He has turned out many good teams since his coming to Elder and this year is no exception. With the nucleus of the Legion National Champions he has high hopes of winning the Class "A" title again in 1956. F. Frederick. The spring season opened with the defeat of Deer Park, 6-O. Then followed Lockland, 6-O: St. Henry, 9-1, St. Xavier beating Elder, 3-2, for the first defeat of the season. Retaliating Elder took a doubleheader from Lancaster, 6-0 and 9-8. Terrace Park, 6-2, New Woodward, 17-4, Roger Bacon, 5-5: Western Hills beating Elder for their second loss, 9-53 the most runs scored off an Elder team in two years. McNickolas was downed the following game, 10-3. Then St. Xavier was avenged by the Panthers by beating them 8-3. If Elder wins two more games in the Catholic league they will be the G.C.L. Champs for the third year in a row. With the. tournament starting in the beginning of May the team is starting to hit well and play errorless ball afield. This is always a good omen for Elder teams. The boys are looking forward to the trip to Columbus where the finals are being held again this year. 3 'u we ,v ff' 11 ' 'V J In 4 5 f f 25.
