The elected queen, Grace Engle, held court with her two attendants, Caroline Vigneri and Rita Yerger. Lyle Talbot, one of our class members, was elected Vice President of the Student Council. This herd work found the Elba Central Musicians holding five first prizes and two trophies before school had even begun in September. Precision marching occupied the autumn months. Twice each week the players strutted across the ath- letic field to learn the drill formations for the performances given at night football games. 'I'he routine included a "Sports Calendar" featuring the formations of s ship, a gun, a race-track and a skating rink. The crowds responded to such songs as "The Skaters Waltz" and "Sailing, Sailing." A pep band of eleven members selected by Mr. Mark supported the basketball team at home games. The annual Christmas Concert featured soloists Ella Smith, John Durgin and William Vanderhoof. Lyle Talbot was student conductor of one number. Several instrumentalists assisted the chorus. Miss Edwards directed the Christmas singing and Judy Myers acted as accompanist. During the game with Corfu, Carl Scott and Eddie Hyback both were injured. Scott, our first string quarterback, broke his ankle and a few plays later, Hyback, our second string quarterback, injured his knee and ankle. After these accidents, quarter- backs eliminated, Coach had to change our whole system of plays. Then in a later game, Don Ruck, broke his nose knocking our active plqer list dowm to twelve. Despite the mishaps, the season ended with a respectable won 2, lost b, record. The team showed un- usually good spirit even when losing. This club orginially composed of just seniors, decided to include all girls in H P BT' high school interested in helping during gym classes. They also officiated at girls' basketball games. Soccer intramurals highlighted the beginning of the season. Games were played with Byron-Bergen, at both Elba and Byron-Bergen. Girls playing in these games were Barbara Manhardt, Margaret Laney, Elaine Dickes Ph llis Dorman Carrie Underhill, Roberta Wood, Pauline Monachino, Norlene Boyce, Shirley Seavert, Y , Gail Talbot Connie Whaley Virginia Smart, Gertrude Shultz, Edith Stokes, Janet Ruck, Doris Jane George, , , Armbrewster, Noreen Smith, Nellie Shamp, Jo Ann Palermo, Martha Smith, Jeanette Chapell, Irene Griffith, and Marlene Rowcliffe. Then came the basketball season. Mixed teams, the Bears, Cubs, Lions, and Panthers, enjoyed the sport with the Bears coming out on top. An honor basketball team composed of Phyllis Dorman, Josephine Vigneri, Caroline Vigneri, Pauline Monachino, Jane George, Carrie Underhill, Florence Palermo and Geral- dine Zicari traveled to Corfu but suffered defeat. Another team of girls including Roberta Wood, Margaret Laney, Elaine Dickes, Barbara Manhardt, Paul- ine Monachino, Florence Palermo, Dorothy Armbrewster, Virginia Smart, Jane George and Carrie Underhill participated in a basketball playday at Batavia. At the Batavia Y.M.C.A. Janet Ruck, Pat Benton, Marlene Rowcliffe, Margaret Laney and Roberta Wood donned bathing caps for a sports day of swimming. Volleyball, badminton, bowling, track, dancing. and softball playdays crowded the Spring claender.
