GIRLS' SPORTS
The girls at Elba Central have entered many sports and activities this year.
Under the leadership of the following G. A. A. officers, we had a very successful year.
President Mary Test
Vice-President Phyllis Donman
Secretary and Treasurer Nancy Gillette
The Leaders Club, s branch of the G. A. A. that plans and prepares for sportsdays at our school,
had the following officers:
President Sallyann Andrews
Vice-President Dorothy Rosborough
Secretary and Treasurer Beatrice Wood
The soccer sportsday, planned by the Leaders Club, had to be postponed indefinitely because of
the cold weather. However, before the season was over, a group of Sophomores did play against Pavil-
ion in October. ,
During the basketball season the G. A. A. honor team, consisting of Phyllis Donnan, Jane George,
Jean Gillette, Carol Griffith, Rose Jachimowicz, Pauline Monachino, Joan Huck, Helene Schultz, Martha
Shamp, and Sylvia Whaley journeyed to Medina where they jostled in a basketball sportsday. They suc-
ceeded in winning one of the two games played.
This same honor team went to Rochester on February 27 to tangle with the Madison High girls. A-
gain they were triumphant in bringing home a glorious victory for Elba. The scores of the two games
were Elba 35 to Madison's A and Elba 16 to their 15.
Basketball intramurals during noon hour at school this year consisted of a different arrangement.
The high school girls were placed on teams of the Canine league. Each team was tagged with the name
of a dog. These fighting canines then fought for the championship. The Collie team bounded to the
victory with high honor.
Mixed basketball teams of high school girls played at Corfu, Holley, Akron, and Bergen. A Fresh-
man team played basketball against Batavia and East Pembroke.
On November 19, Barbara Ames, Helen Benson, Nancy Gillette, Ella Smith and Gail Talbot yelled
the Elba cheers at a cheerleading clinic at Caledonia.
Two teams of Junior and Senior girls played Albion in a volleyball game and both teams trounced
their opponents with their unusual serving ability and teamwork. Other volleyball games scheduled
for the season were with Bergen and Alexander and various other area schools.
An honor team of bowlers rolled high scores at the Le Roy alleys on March 22.
At Batavia on May 17, an honor team competed for track awards. Some of the events were relay
races, high jumping, broad jumping, and the soft-ball throw.
Girls from grades 9-12 tripped the light fantastic in the folk dancing at Pavilion Central
School.
The annual soft-ball playday, attended by girls from grades ll and 12, saw Elba hurl many an
exciting game.
All of the members of the Girls Athletic Association want to thank Miss Thering for her guidance
and friendship during our successful and interesting year.
