THE YEARBOOK STAFF OF EL RENO HIGH SCHOOL Proudley Presents the 1963 Boomer Collegian Silling: Jamcy Dennis, Managing Editor; Bonnie Barnes, Editor. Standing: Debi Perdue, Associato Editor. Table of Contents Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Sports Music Clubs Royalty Activities Community College Advertising Foreword The connecting thread chosen for this publication —Crossroads of Life—is uniquely fitting to this compre- hensive high school in a community where education is viewed as the principal product of a proud people. Ad- ministratively El Reno High School students are able to select limitless tracks for learning resulting in an im- measurable number of intersections. The school system, recognizing that our entire society is permeated with wholesale evolution, is seeking constantly to gear itself to educate young people for flexibility. The attitude that one should continue to learn as long as he is ignorant is a requirement for education at the crossroads. One can not be dependent on some- one else to plan his route; he must be educated to chart his own course wisely. Specifics must be taught with an internal design for transfer to a new situation. To foster the principle of life-long learning necessary in a world where a job can quickly become technologically obsolescent, this school at Oklahoma's Crossroads fea- tures a supplementary junior college and a companion adult education program. Students secure in the present are not chained to the customary, but are free to elect to move ahead with faith in the future. Leslie F. Roblyer. Dedication MR. BILL DAVIS Mr. Davis is one of best loved and most respected teachers in the El Reno school system. It is with great pleasure that the seniors of 1963 dedicate the Boomer Collegian to him. Mr. Davis has been a staff member in El Reno highschool for the past nine years. He has served as biology, composite math, and senior math teacher; head track coach, assistant football and basketball coach, and dean of boys. Receiving a Master of Teaching degree in the summer of 1957 at South- western, Mr. Davis continued his education. He is both a biology and math major. At Southwestern, ''Smiley, as his students affectionately call him, was president of his senior class; participated in football, basketball and track for four years; obtained Little College All-American Basketball recognition; was named all-conference basketball and football player; and was listed on the Dean's honor roll six semesters. All schools need more dedicated young men to serve the nation's youth, and we would wish sincerely that Mr. Davis would stay with EHS for many years to come. FACULTY Mr. Leslie F. Roblyer Superintendent of Schools El Reno Highschool has a standard of excellence matched by few highschools in the state as well as the nation. Without the devoted service of our superintendent and former principal, Mr. Leslie F. Roblyer, such excellence would not have been possible. He worked behind the scenes many hours to see that our highschool ran smoothly and efficiently. Not only did he administer with a sense of conscientiousness, but he also knew the names and background of virtually every student in the highschool. His organization, complete control of every situation, and genuine concern for the intellectual growth of El Reno students makes him beloved by all. We thank you, Mr. Roblyer, for your dedicated efforts. We wish you well as Superintendent of El Reno Public Schools. Mrs. Elton Hobson Clerk 6 Mr. James E. Bass Mr. C. Riley Strong Mr. Boyd S. Wilson President Vice-President Treasurer The Senior Class of 1963 wish to thank sincerely each member of the Board of Education for his time and interest given to make education forces in El Reno those which invoke admiration and respect. Mr. Morris D. Hurst Member Mr. Edwin C. Porter Member Mr. Donald L. Stevenson Member Born and reared in Haileyville, Oklahoma, Mr. Jerry M. Hutchison came to El Reno in 1956. He was a graduate of Haileyville high school and received his Bachelor of Arts degree at South Eastern State College at Durant. Mr. Hutchison completed his formal education at the University of Oklahoma by receiving a Master of Educa- tion degree. He has majors in social studies and business education. Mr. Hutchison was principal in the high schools at Faxon and Haileyville, Oklahoma, for three years each, and was principal of Hillcrest elementary school for six years before coming to EHS this year. Jeff and Tony, Mr. Hutchison's sons, keep him busy at home, while the students and faculty keep this clear thinking and patient man occupied long after school hours. The students of EHS welcome Mr. Hutchison and wish him many enjoyable and profitable years at EHS. 8 Mrs. Ruth Alexander Art Mr. Woodrow Barton T I Mr. Robert Beck Composite Math, Algebra Mr. Jerry Brlsto Biology, Physical Educa- tion Mr. Charles Chapman Auto Mechanics Mr. Jim Curtis Sociology, World Affairs, American History, Physi- cal Education Mr. Bill Davis Biology I, Biology IA, Composite Math Mr. Ernest Doke English III, English IV, Creative Writing Mr. Floyd Durham 'ping I and II, College sychology Mrs. Floyd Durham English I and IA Mrs. Clint Eubanks English I and II Mr. Stanley Funderburg, Oklahoma History, Civics, Physical Education Miss Clay Gilbert Mr. Larry Glass Mr. Art Harrison Mrs. Art Harrison Spanish I and II General Business, Physical Government Library Education Mr. Lloyd Henslee Vocational Agriculture I, II, III, and IV Miss Jean Hightower Girls Physical Education Mrs. Edwin Jewitt English I, Latin I and II Miss Mabel Jones English IV and Colleg( English 10 Mrs. George Kizer Homemaking II, III, IV Miss Irene March French IA, IIA, IIIA Mr. Joe F. Al- though the Indians were a small team, their team effort more than made up for this handicap. Playing only one team all year that averaged close to the small 170 pound aver- age of the Indians front seven, and playing several teams that outweighed them 15-25 pounds a man, the Indians still racked up a total of 228 points to 162 points scored against them. The tough defense of the Indians was relatively small, but very quick, and gave excellent support to a determined offense. The Indians offense, spearheaded by quarterback Joe Shumate, liked to run the ends and tackles best but could always depend on the middle for the all important short yardage or the long pass for an occasional long gainer. Plagued by injuries throughout the season, the Indians still substained a 5-5 record, the best season since the 8-2 record of 1958; and it must be remembered that El Reno fell before some of the state's best. Joe Shumate Glen Rickner Don White Season After a victorious start for the 1962-63 basketball season, the El Reno Indians, coached by Jesse L. Urfon, continued on the trail to victory to run into road blocks. The team was boosted at the start of the season by Joe Shumate, only returning starter, who averaged 24 points for the first two games. Often routing victories over Shawnee and Putman City, the Indians were set back by the Midwest City Bombers and hit again when Stillwater slid by them in the Enid Tournament. They then returned blows to the Summary enemy by blasting past John Marshall with a very impres- sive score. From then on it was rough sailing as the Indians moved down the schedule ladder 'til they rammed home a sharp blow by downing Capital Hill on their own ground. A rally seemed in sight but the drought returned as the Indians failed to tally a winning score for the rest of the regular season. As the curtain closed on the EHS Indians, it found them, after one of the roughest schedules in recent years, with a season record of 4-14. Porter CROSSROADS OF LIFE As graduation time nears, we approach an important crossroad of life. We can continue our education and thus travel further in the direction that we have started, we can turn to the right or left and choose a vocation and begin adult life with or without a mate, or we can retreat down the road we have just come. There is not a fifth choice—that of standing where we are; because if we attempt to do that, we shall slip backward. We must go forward. We cannot relive our childhood nor adolescent years. Maturing brings its sobering responsibilities. We have passed numerous crossroads already, and we shall continue to pass many more. Our choices, our courage, our perseverance and our desire to excel will largely determine our success in life. We can- not falter; we must not fail. We must go ahead, Heart within and God o'erhead.
