if Mr' Fix-ll
This year's annual is dedicated to three men
on whom the spotlight seldom falls, but there
are few more deserving. These men are far too
modest to expect any recognition for the impor-
tant roles they have at our school. '
The man responsible for keeping the school
equipment in tip-top condition is Mr. Herman
Fennell who does an outstanding iob. Side by
side is Mr. Andrew Fisher who has the respon-
sibility of keeping all classrooms and facilities
scrupulously cleaned and properly maintained.
Mr. Charles Barnett, last but far from least, is the
man responsible for the beauty of our campus.
His task of caring for the shrubs, trees, and
lawns on campus is certainly appreciated by all
of us as we go about the campus. We realize
that good education could not be effective with-
out the fine surroundings they have produced
for us.
And so as El Rancho Moves Ahead, we pause
to salute Mr. "Herm" Fennell, Mr. "Andy" Fisher
and Mr. "Charlie" Barnett who contribute so
much to the success of our school by taking care
of the physical aspects of the plant. May this
book be a remembrance for many years to come
of the appreciation we feel towards you three
fine men.

We the students of the class of
'58, in order to have the best Senior
Class, have completed these activ-
ities: Our Senior Dance, Picnic, As-
sembly, Play, Tea and to end our
year in grand style, we had our
Baccalaureate, Graduation, Break-
fast, and last but not least our All-
Night-Graduation-Party.
As we move ahead to go our sep-
arate ways we leave behind a gift
to show our gratitude for all that we
have learned and hope that through
this we will be remembered as the
greatest Senior Class of El Rancho.

This year's Junior Class has had
a busy schedule, including such var-
ied subjects as sponsorship of the
Junior-Senior Prom and choice of
the powder blue sweaters they will
wear in their Senior year at El
Rancho.
President Bob Harryman, aided by
vice-president Marion Eide and sec-
retary Wendy Wilcox, has led the
Junior Class in many actiyities.
Among these are plans for a book
cover sale and a pep rally, pitting
Juniors against Seniors in an effort
to promote more and better spirit
among the upper clossmen. And
the Juniors MOVE AHEAD to till the
position of B.P.O.C. lbest people on
campusl.

Hoeing the vegetables. Line it up.
This year's agriculture classes have had fun
in raising many different vegetables and flowers,
These boys really know how much better the
vegetables are that one raises himself than
those found in stores. Besides working vege-
tables plots, the ag' students have raised num-
erous kinds of flowers in special planting areas
around the quad.

Planing
Mr. Tarsala and his "carpenters" have had a busy
year in the building of lhe four1h student-built
home. The Homemaking Ill classes, aided by
Mrs. Lawrence, have also confribufed a great deal
to the interior of lhe house, choosing the color
srhemes and household furnishings.

The Sophomore Class through the
year has contributed greatly to the
Don's spirit, by putting their all into
their pep rallies. Also turning their
talents to winning the March of
Dimes Drive. Planning various'ac-
tivities, as the Freshman-Sophomore
and fudge sales, their cabinet did
a splendid iob. This year they were
also able to pick out their class rings.
All these activities helped to make
this year a very exciting one.

5: -..
Annually toward the middle of September the
friendly school awakes with a start from its sum-
mer sleep to discover the Freshmen horde ex-
ploring the campus, with definite intentions of
overtaking the Senior Class. This year the Fresh-
men Class had a very successful year. All indi-
cations show that this class will continue to move
ahead as they progress in years.

This year's Don team, despite the many iniuries it suffered all sea-
son long, still managed to make it a winning season by trouncing Cali-
fornia 26 to 7 in the final game of the year. As a result of the victory
over Calhi, the Dons obtained a 5 win 4 loss record for the season.
Throughout the season the Dons -could have made a better showing if
not for the loss of two and three key men in each game. The Don team
despite this handicap still survived the season, winning because of the
fine strategy of the coaching staff and the spirit and drive which char-
acterized our boys all season long. When for the first time of the season,
the Don team was at full strength they showed their ability by walking
all over the fabulous Calhi eleven.

The Bee middleweights, like their Var-
sity Big Brothers, had their share of in-
iuries This year. Despite this handicap
They lost but Three games this season.
It was too bad that two of these were
league games lost To Traditional rivals,
Calhi and Montebello. The Third loss
was to Excelsior, in a game That saw The
lead change hands several times. l-lad
There been more time The story might
have ended differently. Although their
season wasn'T a Too successful one, El
Rancho is still proud of the tremendous
spirit shown by the Bee middleweights
and The fine coaching of Mr. Snowden

League Champs gf
Under the direction of head coach,
Gene Leach, the mighty Don Cees went
through another victorious season, win-
ning the S.G.V.L. Championship. Fresh-
man quarterback, Marshall Adair, and
Halfbacks Mike Sanchez and Tony Realy-
vasquez provided the zip in the back-
field for the Dons. This year's line was
a big factor in the league championship
for the Cees. Lead by Dick Schroeder,
Bob Crile, and Paul Armendariz the Cee
line lead the way for backfield play. The
Don defense showed real power by hold-
ing most of their opponents to a stand
still. The defense was headed by Norm
McMillan, Barry Browning, Mike Preston,
and Bob Hogan. This year's team lacked
the strength and depth of last season's
squad and had to fight hard every game
with the result that each victory was a
deserved one.

Bee Basketball r
For the first time in Bee basketball history the Don
middleweights won the S.G.V.L. championship. Led
by Ronnie Lamb's fine defensive play, Bob Harry-
man's rebounding, and Dennis Dull's consistent
scoring, the Dons managed to go through league
play with an outstanding record of nine wins and
one loss. In the Excelsior tournament, the Don Bees
fiished fourth behind Excelsior and Montebello, but
in league play the story was quite different as the
Bees finished first in the league, ahead of Excelsior
and Montebello. Lyle Timmerman, Denny Baier, and
Dave Sanchez all added points to the Don cause.

Under the coaching of Joe Osterman, the
Cee basketball five ended the season with a

two league games, they had a good practice
season. This year's team finished in a tie for
fifth place, but the team looked very good at
times, and showed real potential. Marshal
Adair, Frank Mateus, Steve Lynch, Tom Hensley,
Bob Crile and Dick Schroeder all helped the Don
Cee's scoring cause.

Due to an early yearbook deadline it was impossible to give
the final results for the Don track team season. The Varsity
Team had a strong field event division which helped to make
up in part for a rather weak track section. In field events
the Varsity showed real power in the work of Wes Faith
and Jerry Ewart-pole vault, Chris Cooperfeshot put, and
Dave Sanchez-broad iurnp. Sal Ramirz and Dave Vandel
are big guns in the track group.

Hockey is a sport enjoyed
by all. If your luck is good
and you are out of the way
of a swinging hockey stick,
you are sure of having lots
of fun. The manager this
year was Jeri Tubbs, and
Advisor, Miss Hagler.
Modern Dance is truly the
most creative and graceful
part of G.A.A. Fun was had
by all under manager Donna
Wahlgren and advisor Miss
Turner.

Starting out a successful year of activity for
G.A.A., was the Dad and Daughter Sports Night.
This enables fathers to meet their daughters' friends
and to compete with them in a variety of sports.
Making new friends, good sportsmanship, and
cooperation are some of the many goals which are
achieved by the Girls' Athletic Association during
the year.
This year Wanda Mattews and Cheryl Harlow
were chosen as freshmen representatives from their
respective school districts to serve on the G.A.A.
Board. Board members, managers, and advisors did
a wonderful iob in making this year a progressive
one.
Closing out the year for G.A.A. was the Mother
and Daughter Banquet the results of the G.A.A. elec-
tions were announced, and the installation of the
new officers climaxed an enjoyable evening.

The combined efforts ot the annual staft
and photography classes have made this an-
nual possible. Mr. Cornelson, head of photog-
nd his staff have worked continuously
all year, preparing the pictures tor the annual,
while Mr. Gardner, and the annual crew
planned the pages, scheduled the pictures, iden-
titled all the students and wrote the copy. We
have tried to do our best to provide the readers
ot this book with an interesting, accurate and
enjoyable account of the 1957-i958 school year.

This year the newspaper staff
has done a fine iob of producing
the weekly paper, "El Rodeo."
Mr. Ziff and his staff members
have had many new and differ-
ent experiences. They have
worked hard to meet deadlines,
to get required copy to the print-
ers, and to have an interesting
and informative newspaper for
the El Rancho Student Body.
