EL PASO SCHOOL BOARD Lelt to right I 1: Hulse Calvert Tucker Ted Andress A H. Hughey, Mrs. T, P, Clendenin, C. M. lrviri. ' Mr A. H. Hughey ln the Spring of 1910, Mr. A. H. Hughey be- gan his school career in El Paso, He was a young lawyer at the time and began teaching because El Paso High School, then housed in Morehead School building, needed a teacher for half a day. He continued to teach the fol- lowing year because both he and the pupils liked the teaching. He became principal ot the school in 1914. lt was while he was still prin- cipal that the city twice voted bonds to build a high school building. Mr. Hughey says that the city was willing to vote the bonds because it was said at the time that it was the finest high school building in the United States. Mr. Hughey Watched the building as it was built, brick by brick. lt was he who went with the contractor in 1916 to see that each door could be unlocked before he accepted the building. E1 Paso High School stands today as a me- morial to a man who planned wisely and well. After forty-five years ol service the school stands, majestic and adequate-a tribute to the man who has had the vision to plan for the future and the courage to carry out his plans. -THE SPURASTAFF
