One of the most laborlous

At approxrmately sxx twenty

some strange Utopla where
there are no hxghway patrol

At exactly SIX thtrty a sharp

For days afterwards I walked around 1n a daze I couldnt
keep her out of my mmd Id pass back and forth 1n front
of her house hopxng to get a gllmpse of her and never
worklng up enough nerve even to telephone her Finally
my pattence was rewarded and I saw her once more
Gatherlng all the courage and energy at my command I
popped the questton I actually asked her for a date It
seemed an eternlty before I recexved my answer--and my
frrst touch of drsxlluslon For at that moment she began to
show me who was the boss She told me what tlme to call
for her plcked out the plcture show we were to attend even
though I had seen xt before and strongly h1nted that she

Ever smce thxs frrst love Ive been wondermg Are all

Graduate of May and now a Student at the College of Mines
There it stands solid grey impressive To a stranger it is
just another handsome building with Grecian pillars fine
architecture stadium and tree spnnkled campus To one
who has graduated and started out on a new and unfamiliar
highway El Paso High School is like an old friend standtng
alongside a well remembered road It represents all the
magnificent and all the little amusmg thmgs one recalls about
his days in high school
The ex remembers grappling with Shakespeare s To be or
not to be or with quadratic equations Then there was the
bag of peanuts he dropped at the football game when a
certain girl smiled at htm Perhaps he remembers sitting
in study hall and gazmg at a potted plant or the ttme that
he had eighteen bulletins to deltver on courtesy three minutes
before the bell rang At any rate the memories are of Hts
high school Yes it was his 1ump1ng off place into a grown
up world whether college or work
He may pause once in a whtle and look up at the E
on the mountain That E stands for Excelsior he will say
to himself straighten his shoulders and then start on wlth
new determination to do better
Now as he goes on his way either tn the morning when
the suns first rays seem to glint a cheery hello on High
School s wmdows or in the evening when dusk is dropping like
a blanket over the stadium he pomts wtth pride and says
Thats my school'

Willie Fudge cocked his beanie over one ear and whistled
gatly as he walked quickly down the dark street
Humph he thought with a superior smile all those
clucks and their gals screaming and shuddermg at that silly
Hallowe en midnight matinee Oh well girls are mtwits any
way It takes more than a phoney movie thriller to scare a
man of seventeen well almost seventeen
As he turned down the customary shortcut to get home
he felt a tiny shiver down his spine but st1ll bolstered by hls
superlor courage he continued down the long dark lane
Gosh its dark he muttered Theres a light at the end
but 1ts pretty far away
As the light grew brighter Wtllies heart grew lighter and
his courage swelled exceedingly But watt what was that?
lt sounded sorta shthermg sliding like something behind him
crawling? Maybe-oh no it couldnt be a snake Oh no not
a snake' Wxllxes feet walked faster but the Thing came
closer Willie slowed down because his legs were almost
petrified
Suddenly something cold and clammy touched h1s anklel
He fell and ripped those rah rah cords he had 1ust got
His knee was bleeding but up he scrambled the thmg
clutched him again and he fell once more This time it had
htm He was afraid to look down at his pursuer He crawled
toward the light the unknown still holding on
And there in the light it was That evil clutching hand
had only been his rah rah suspenders that matched
his now torn pants

MARION MORGAN
There is such a variety of sights and wonders in the United
States that one might travel from Califomta to Maine from
Texas to Montana and never once come across a stmllar
Panorama They are so varied in grandeur and malesty
that one might belleve America to be the compensating
factor for all the uglmess and barren spots on the earth
Unfortunately Americans dont appreciate America How
often have you heard the so called seasoned traveler re
mark My deahl The Blue Grotto at Capri was simply the
most exquisite sight Ive ever laid eyes onl or You 1ust
cant imagine the lmmensity of the pyramids at Gizah Really
one must go abroad if he wants to see the world as 1t really
tsl fAll this conversation takes place in the most approved
Bostonian accent tool
Granted that most tourist attractions are badly over exploited
and overrated the traveler isnt officially seasoned without
some of the ingredients from the American Spice Iar for
example the Carlsbad Caverns
When one first approaches the Caverns his curiosity is
aroused as to what could be so particularly wonderful about
a b1g black hole in the ground Yet the minute he has taken
three steps within the cave he ts lmmedlately awed by the
coolness of the air the murky darkness pierced here and there
by the irridescent glow which apparently originates from
nowhere the beauty of the separate chambers curtained
mites and stalactltes and delicate heltctites glistening and
glowing as the light plays on the tiny drops of dew clustered
on them One follows various trails some guarded by railings
on the steep lncltnes others leading onto the flat level ground
to the frozen waterfalls and crystal sprmgs through high cetl
mged rooms and tunnels past pits of undetermined depth and
lower unexplored caverns
The most memorable experience within the cavern is the
moment at the famed Rock of Ages where one by one the
friendly gulding lights are turned out As if a million tons
of wool have descended smothertng and choking the tnky
blackness and utter quiet create a tomb like pall over the
onlooker First faintly then louder is heard the sound of voices
singing Rock of Ages Nowhere else could one feel such
reverence the nearness of God seems to penetrate the stillness
and the voices sound as those of Hts angels Gradually one
by one the lights again send out their shaft ltke fingers Here
definitely one realizes that not the size of Caverns alone is
remarkable but the wonder of nature and God

The combined boys and girls chorus of El Paso High School has done much to make
the student loody 'music-conscious' this year. Many of our most enjoyable assemblies
were the direct result of Mrs. Link and her hard working group. lt is the aim and purpose
of this organization to encourage and develop those students interested in taking part
in the local state and national musical events during the school year.

battle. His spirit will be missed
in the race for the champion-

RALQPH MARMOLEIO
R al p h ' s enthusiastic spirit
transferred itself from the grid-
iron to the cage court. He was
probably the smoothest player
that El Paso ever had.
BUDDY WARD
After overcoming his initial
difficulties, Buddy developed
into a smooth player. Next
year he should be ci leading
contender for All District.
STEVE MINAS
It was Steve's free throw in
the Regional game at Marta

chance at the State Title. An-
