We wanted to have anyone looking at this book to feel like they were entering our own world here at EPHS. On these pages we have given a few highlights of this year. As you look through the remainder of the book you will see a more detailed account of the people and events that made the world of El Paso High the unique world that it is. We hope you will enjoy looking through this book and remember all the great times we had here at El Paso High School. COACH'S REMARKS We started the year with the goal of making the playoffs despite the fact we were entering the year with quarterbacks that had never taken a snap from center at the varsity level. We also had little depth and could not afford injuries. The Chenoa game caused a severe shake-up of our lineup because of injuries. Some players did not perform at the same level of competition until late in the year. The Minonk game was a super team effort as many underclassmen stepped in and contributed in a significant way. This experience should help them in the future. TRI-CAPTAINS 52 Ian Bergquist, Jeff Burtis. Ryan Schlipf.Kris Toberman, Sam Uphoff, Parker Scheuerman. Coach Orr.SENIORS Troy Mool, Kyle Henry, John Street, David Baxter, Ryan Schlipf, Brian Rinkenberger, Brian Parkhouse This year’s edition of the Comet basketball team seemed to win or lose games in streaks. We won 9 out of 11 games in the months of December and January and then had a 5 game losing streak in February. Nine games were decided by 2 points or less; we won 4 of those and lost 5. Our downfall in close games was our inability to shoot free throws. We shot 50% from the line for the season as opposed to 70% and above for the 2 previous seasons. Our record ended up at 14-11 and we tied a school record for consecutive winning seasons at 4 in a row. These boys never gave up on themselves and improved as the season progressed. One only has to look at the two Roanoke scores to see this improvement. It was certainly a pleasure to work with this fine group of young men. Despite an up and down year, we were still able to • win the Conference and make it to the Regional championship. We placed 2nd in the Tri-Valley and Woodford County Tournaments. The team’s biggest strength was its defense which forced the opposition into 26 turnovers a game. The girls played hard to achieve these accomplishments. We lose just one senior in guard Becky Jones. Becky did a fine job for us, especially on defense where she had 90 steals on the year. The future looks bright for the Lady Comets, who are returning 9 letter winners. We have set attainable goals for 1988-89 and through hard work and dedication we believe they can be reached. Coach Kelly 60Junior Varsity Wrestling (Row 1) Rick Cline. The El Paso High School Wrestling team had a very memorable and exciting 87-88 season. Team efforts produced high place finishes in many tournaments. The wrestlers were 5th in the 16 team Eureka Tourney, 2nd in the 12 team Prairie Central Tourney, 3rd in the 10 team LeRoy Tourney, and capped off a great year with a fabulous 2nd PLACE at the Regional Championships. This 2nd place Regional Championship is even more rewarding considering the restructuring of our regional which brought south many new and tougher teams from the north. The final meet record stood at 17-7. Three of the seven losses were to Class AA teams while three other close losses were to ranked Class A teams. Five boys qualified for Sectionals by finishing in the top three places at Regionals. They were: Dave Mool — 2nd at 98, Jeff Tipler — 2nd at 112, Phil Haynes — 2nd at 126, Brad Kupferschmid — 1st at 138, and lan Bergquist — 3rd at 185. Five other boys just missed a shot at Sectionals by finishing 4th. Brad Kupferschmid advanced to the 3rd place match at Sectionals before being defeated in overtime for a chance at qualifying for the State Tournament. Six boys distinguished themselves by winning 20 varsity matches or more against a tough schedule. They were: Brad Kupferschmid with 33 wins, Phil Hynes with 27 wins, Ian Bergquist with 25 wins, Randy Rarick with 21 wins, Jeff Tipler with 21 wins, and Joe Malcolm with 21 wins. Congratulations on a fine season wrestlers and GOOD LUCK next year. 62 Coach SchroederTraci Faulk. Angie Wadsworth. Jodi Wolf, Kristie Armstrong, Nikki Wickenhauser. Susan Montgomery. It all began when Kevin cleared 5’ in grade school and improved his height by 5 inches between the 1982 and 1983 State Track Meets. He began his first track season in high school with leaps and bounds. He set new records at the J.V. County Meet, the J.V. Conference Meet, and the Varsity Conference Meet with jumps of 6’, 6’2%”, and 6’4Vi”, respectively. Kevin cleared the bar at 6’9‘ 4” at the Pantagraph Area Honor Roll Meet and that same year he tied for sixth place at the 1986 Class A State Track Meet. Kevin’s career took a plunge as a back problem was discovered and his future as a high jumper was grim; but he came back in 1987 and became only the second Pantagraph area jumper to clear 7’, establishing a new personal best. He went on to win both the 1987 and 1988 State Track Meets with jumps of 6’9” and 7’1”. He became the only El Paso track athlete to win back-to-back state titles. His jump of 7’2” at the ISU Meet gave him not only the best indoor jump in the country this year but also the sixth all-time best indoor jump ever. Some of Kevin’s other feats in-cude winning the 1987 Prairie State Games title with a jump of 6’10”, clearing 7’ at the Olympia Co-ed Invitational, and also jumping 7’ at a Gibson City Meet. Kevin ended with an undefeated record over his last two years in high school. This past summer he jumped 7’3” at the Keebler International Track and Field Meet to win the event and also claim the best outdoor jump in the nation. Once again, this was a new personal best for Kevin — for now anyway. 691988 Commencement CO-VALEDICTORIANS: David Baxter, Tami Martin, Tricia Neisler, Cassandra Ringger.
