But, with the help of the faculty and staff, we found we were able to meet each challenge and achieve success. As we struggled to reach our goals we developed friendships and memories that will stay with us always. Now, the doors of El Paso High School are closing behind us and a new door has opened, leading each of us to a new dimension of our lives. Farewell — The Class of 1986Row 1 Katie Blackmore. Messer 1985 CometsWe faced a tough, uphill battle at the beginning of the 1985 season. We had to replace 20 of 22 starters from the 1984 squad and many seniors found themselves playing different positions at the varsity level for the first time of their high school careers. The Le Roy game had to be the highlight of the season because of the exciting finish and the total team effort. Our defense usually kept us in most games, and our statistics for the year were descent. However, we played a stiff schedule in which 5 out out of 6 losses came to play-off teams. Several of those teams, such as Chenoa, Blue Ridge, and Eureka we played down to the win. The team won the Wenona Tourn., Woodford County Invitational and the Midstate Conf. titles. This was also the first time a basketball team, at El Paso, had 20 win seasons back to back. The reason for their success was good man to man defense and excellent team play on offense. We were rated 10th in the state for most of the season in the Associated Press Class A Poll. We ended the regular season rated 11th. Wenona Tournament Champs Woodford Co. Champs Mid-State Conf. To do so Troy was forced to wrestle back at the Mahomet sectional. This is the most difficult path a wrestler has to take. His win in the wrestle back knocked out the boy who was fourth ranked in the state. Overall a very young team gained a tremendous amount of invaluable experience. Sixteen out of the twenty-two team members were Freshmen and Sophomores. Six freshmen represented out team at the District tournament. With this type of experience the future can only look promising. Special team honors and records go to Brian Haines who was District champion and also set a season record for escapes with forty-one. Sectional qualifiers were Troy Mann, Brian Haines, Jeff Kearfott, and Jeff Tipler. Jeff Tipler is the first freshman to win twenty varsity matches and also the first freshman to ever qualify for sectionals. Special thanks to Troy Mann and Dave Buck as our only two four year wrestlers. Your leadership is greatly appreciated. Homecoming was a success with the theme being — "Tin Pan Alley". The dance was held at The Elms. Several new things were tried this year. One of the biggest things was having a homecoming week and dance for the Basketball and Wrestling teams. The "Snow Ball" was a big hit. Other activities included rollerskating in Washington and more dances. 62 Kris Wolf — Vice President, Kathy Parkhouse — President, Sherri Stiles — Treasurer, Karen Tipler — SecretarySpanish Club Row 1 B Marlin.
