We beat La Puente, 19-0, Mt. View, 24-14 and Keppel, 15-7. The best word to describe this 1981 team was " inex- perience " and although the Young Lions were eager and learned from every game, we could not win the " close games " : Whittier (6-14), St. An- thony (14-21), Rosemead (14-15) and Arroyo (10-12). Starting on offense were: Junior Center, Gus Quintana; Guards, Senior Fernando Suarez and Junior Leonard Galicia; Tackles, Juniors John Mellor and Blaine Wagoner; Junior Tight End Henry Ramirez; Flankers, Seniors Ralph Coral and Mario Venegas and Junior Charlie Gates; Junior QB Angel Benitez; Junior Fullback Stanford Tucker and Junior Tailback, Ray Olivas. Starting on Defense: Middle LB ' s, Juniors Ray Olivas and Jaime Salcedo; Outside LB ' s, Juniors Mark Silva and Bill Hall; Ends, Junior (two year letterman) Yukie Oshiro and Senior Jose Rodriquez; Tackles, Seniors Manual Hernandez and Pat Olotoa; Corners, Seniors Dan Juarez and Ralph Coral; and Safeties, Juniors Charlie Gates and Mark Salinas. Making the 1981 Mission Valley All-League team were: Defensive Linemen, Yukie Oshiro and Manuel Hernandez; LB, Ray Olivas; Offen- sive Tight End Henry Ramirez — first team; Running Back, first team, Ray Olivas (second leading rusher in the league with 779 yards and 3 TD ' s and 5th leading scorer with 36 points); Running Back, second team, Stanford Tucker (first leading rusher with 855 yards and 9 TD ' s and leading scorer in the league with 60 points). In conclusion, the Lions tried to make it into the CIF playoffs 3 years in a row but missed by 3 points. Next year we have the potential to be a good team, possibly even a great team, but it will take dedication, determination and a change of attitude on the part of the 1982 Varsity to turn things around. 1 .
