Mrs. Hollowell has been the business adviser for the editorial staff since l937, and with the publication of this year- bock she wiil have seen twelve editions of TraiI's End come off the press and go into the hands of Monte men and women. The work that is carried on by Mrs. Hollowell includes securing the printer, the engraver, the binder, and the photographer. She is also in charge of having those "famous" identification pictures taken, Another duty is that of working with the seniors when they have their graduation pictures taken. She supervises the ordering of the annuals and waits with the students in suspense for the first completed annual to arrive. Annual Sales Staff Ink Blots Editor . Art Editor Business a Copy . The El Monte High School football season of l948-49 brought few victories but with the able assistance of the Yell Leaders pictured ab-ove, a new high in school spirit was developed. The Varsity team won only one game which was with Excelsior, but the spirit of the team and the students was at it's peak in every game. Hard luck and disappointment increased the determination of the team to fight even harder for victory at the next game. Some of the outstanding Varsity players were, hard driving back, Bob Bonaparte, passing arm, Dick Jackson. Outstanding on defensive were Jim Ellis and Bob Oddo. Some possible future stars of next year are Sangster and Becker who were outstanding in the Cee Division. Jones, Drake and Brandson of the Bee team will probably move into JayVee spot next year. Promising to make the Varsity shine next year are Barrett, Marshall, Fisher, Seveat and Heronema. Congratulations teams of '48 and Good Luck to you, teams of '49. May you live up to the high goal of spirit and good sportsmanship set by these who preceded you. f-Q4 -'Q 'SX n , 'fn E di Y fi 5 if VCU l ,. , 5. if' I M if ,A X W ,Vid he A La Moyne Armstrong Right End Joe Bowdry Right Tackle Bob Earp Right Tackle Bud La Monk Right Guard Angelo Bosco Center Don Fulcher Left Guard Gay Ailshie Left Tackle Monte Monte Monte Monte Monte Monte Monte Monte Monte Football l 1 1 H I Varsity Football Row 4: Bob Boneparte, Jack Davidson, Bob Oddo, Aaron Math Francis Clark, Vernon Jones. The Varsity placed second in the league, and the Be won the League Championship in their division. Jim Lowes and Mark Costello were chosen first string C.l.F. forwc and guard, respectively. Paul Johnson was selected as center m for the second string. During the beginning of the season Coach Phelps had organiz the Varsity squad so that he had two complete teams. Alternati these teams during the games proved very successful, not only did prove to be a game winner, but it prepared the team for the leag games. ln the first part of the season the Varsity team went to San Die where they took first place in the San Diego lnvitational Tournamel This was a prevue of what the basketball season was going to be lil The few heart-breakers at the beginning of the season were balanc by the thrillers which were won by one and two points. Probably t most thrilling game of the season was the last game which was wl Mark Keppel, Though El Monte was the underdog, the team won to 63.'This was the perfect way to end a season Coach George Phelps deserves a great deal of praise for the fi job of coaching which he performed during the season. Anyone who has any connection with the boys' physi- cal education department knows Mr. William McMullan. "Mac," as he is known to the boys in the gym, has been at El Monte since l943. One of his numerous jobs is checking out foot- ball, track, tennis, basketball and baseball equipment to the teams. He sees that the uni- forms are cleaned and mended after each game. "Mac" keeps an accurate record of the locks and basket numbers and checks them out annually. He supervises the distribution of towels to the boys in each gym class, which is a job in itself. One of the favorite expressions of the coaches is, "What's your trouble? See Mac." Mr. McMuIlan ' ' 2 Tennis Tennis Trophy H. A. Our philosophy of physical education is that the hour assigned as "the pause that refreshes" hour in a girl's total school day must be a most enjoyable experience, that every girl must be orientated, guided, and adjusted into an activity program which is a real joy and pleasure to her. Joyous activity is the chief means of realizing goals of physical education, games, sports, and rhythms. The program should be sufficiently varied to appeal to a wide range of abilities and interests and enlist every pupil's whole-hearted participation. The chances are great that through enjoyment she will know success and through success she will develop a life-long taste for physical skills, activities, and relaxation. More important than mastering the skills of any activity in a physical education program is developing skills of fair play, cooperation, good sportsmanship, tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of the rights of others and the welfare of the group. lt is not our goal to develop athletes but rather to guide the girls into physical, mental, and emotional health habits which will be conducive to the development of the best possible citizenship traits. The aim then is the development of a well integrated personality through activities in on enjoyable environment with the sincere desire that we may contribute much toward the de- velopment of healthy, happy, and worthwhile citizens in a democratic society. This year it has expand- ed to include several new phases of activity. Some of these are modern dance, corrective, folk dance and badminton. True, a few of these were introduced last year, but this year a more extensive program of these activities has been carried out. On this and the following pages are pictures showing the new and old activities alike. ln corrective gym the girls are taught better posture, grace of movement, and p-oise. In modern dance they learn grace and coordi- nation through the rhythmic interpretation of music. All these classes play their part in developing in each girl grace, health and sportsmanship. ,Q 5 ,523 - . wifi? XSS? BWQSYW' f .
