We have been frequently reminded that time marches on, and so it does. Not one of us would have it otherwise, even if he could so order it. We live in a time frame of reference. If this were not so, then there would be no such thing as memory, and how we do cherish the gift of memory, the ability to recall names and to identify them with the faces of friends and acquaintances! The fact that we do sometimes forget makes a book like Trail's End have considerable value to us, and it will grow in value as the years come and go. Trail's End will remind us many times of one of the most interesting and eventful year in the history of our high school. Let us be grateful that we have been given the privilege of working and playing together throughout this school year with so few of the blessings and conveniences of life denied us. It may be that we do face a day of uncertainty, a day piled high with difficulty, but I am sure that we shall rise to meet it with courage born of faith and confidence, with true perspective and singleness of purpose. Let us be grateful for the honor of a hard task in a difficult day. Cordially, R. S. H. ROBERT s. HICKS, SUPERINTENDENT The Board of Trustees, or the power behind the throne, includes Supt. Robert S. Hicks, Harold E. Pearson, clerk, W. S. Rohn, Caryll Pitkin, Edith Stelhorn, and E. M. Thurber, president. We respect these people as we respect no other organization, as they are the ones who are responsible for the school. These persons are rarely seen by the students or faculty, but are vitally important to the faculty and student body, giving us things we would not have otherwise. lO

For four years we have been friends. Now you are going away. Precisely what you will do, where you will go, what high adventures will be yours, even you cannot say. But this much is true, and apprehensible: something of what you be- came here, you will remain. You may easily forget most of the facts you learned, and the theories, even the skills may escape you. But what you became here you must, in a very real sense, forever be. On that foundation you will build your house. Education evades concrete definition, it lives only in its evidence. I sincerely believe that the evidence of your lives will prove the value of your education here. But you will understand that I speak in terms of qualities and not things, there is no other you. WT?
