PRI CIPAL'S MESSAGE v Much has been said about democracy as a system of government and a way of life. l am sure not one of our lil Camino students would want to change it , for any other form. But how can we maintain democracy in thc face of forces arrayed against us? A N Unity, tolerance, and citizenship are basic ele- T Y . . . ments of our democracy. Universal public education ' is the foundation. Respect for the individual is the s 'Q I cornerstone. Teamwork and cooperation bind the framework together. Airplanes, bombs, and munitions of war are much in peopleas minds today. The acquisition of these materials is designed to retain and to main- tain our democratic way of life. But no living organism or principle remains static. Our demo- cratic way of life is no exceptiong either it pro- gresses or it deteriorates. ln order to progress we need more than airplanes, bombs. and munitions. The bomb itself is of little importance, but the mind that makes the bomb is of paramount impor- tance. If that mind is to progress so that the energy released by the bomb can be used not for purposes of destruction, but for purposes of construction, we need for our people, our youth, to be imbued with high ideals, lofty determinations, and that spark that comes from the Divine. dad

The nest of the eagle is always found in the highest places. From the high mountain pinnacles, the eagle can look down upon the rest of the world. What an opportu- nity he has to make choices! Your opportunities of choice are also great! Your choices can make it possible for you to soar to the highest pinnacles of success or fall to the lowest point of degradation. What a privilege we have in a nation like ours! The privilege to choose our friends, our religion, and our vocation is granted to each one. You are known by the friends you keep, by the manner in which you practice your religion. and by the application of your talents in making your vocation a service to mankind. The world is hungry for friendship, longing for fraternal brother- hood, and frantic for leadership. Choose, but choose wisely! Work, but work diligently! Serve, but serve un- selfishly! To reach his pinnacle, the eagle must Look Up and Lift Up. So must you! The 'fpinnacles of leadershipn are never reached hy quitters. Remember, a quitter never leads, and a leader never quits. The Eagles of El CGITLEIIO will top the highest pinnacles of succes and leadership. 111- f X , SUPERI TE DENT'S MESSAGE
