Before classes actually began, EHS students were busy. The fall sports opened their seasons with pre-season drills. The band went to St. Louis to march in the parade which celebrated the opening of Union Station and helped to bring the people back to the city for other attractions such as St. Louis Centere. With school under way by mid-fall, there were changes at EHS. Mr. Dick Ford had been appointed Activities Director and he was busy seeing that “Sports Complex” being constructed on Center Grove Road was progressing as planned. Other changes at EHS brought new teams of cheerleaders to cheer at the girl’s sporting events. Another change was the first election of the new student senate which would act as the political arm of the student body. The senate became busy with the issues of retaining the student commons pavilion, which they had built, for student smoking and with the issue of closing the campus.Sports were on the minds of EHS students in the late autumn as the annual homecoming activities were held. The traditional events of the assembly, the parade, the football game, and the coronation dance were held. On the national sports scene, the St. Louis Cardinals won the National League East Division and ran past Los Angeles Dodgers in the play-offs with homeruns by Ozzie Smith and Jack Clark. EHS students confidently went to World Series games only to see George Brett and the Kansas City Royals spoil their fun. All we got was a lousy sweat shirt. 8In November, EHS students finally received their 1984-85 Tiger Yearbooks, only three months late. Attention quickly shifted to one of the fastest growing sports at EHS, volleyball. The Volleyball team responded to their happy fans by winning the regional tournament. Only the golf team could surpass the volleyball efforts as the Tiger golfers ended another undefeated season and placed second in the state. On the international scene, hopes rose for a more peaceful relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union with a summit meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. President and Mrs. Reagan met with Communist Party Chief and Mrs. Mikhail Gorbachev on November 20.The Christmas season brought tragedy to America as an airplane carrying service men home from the Middle East for Christmas crashed in Newfoundland. Everyone on board was killed; the death toll stood at 248. Things were much more pleasant at EHS fortunately. With the weather surprisingly mild for Winter, students concentrated on their studies and class work. Juding by Mrs. Thompson expressed not all class work was excellent. The annual Christmas assembly was held the day before vacation. 1011After the Christmas holidays, EHS students returned to their studies. Indoor activities were the best activities for the Winter. Clubs took up lots of spare moments as the language clubs sponsored the “International Dinner”, the student council re-organized, and several dances were held. EHS students were interested in basketball and wrestling. Boys basketball was a favorite but the girl’s team clicked off many victories and drew a large following. Thad Summers lead the wrestling team qualifying for post-season competition and setting a record for most victories. On the national sports scene, the Chicago Bears won the Superbowl behind a strong defense and their “punky QB” Jim McMahon. 12E=3 The Spring was a very busy time at EHS with softball and track in season. Coach “Moto” Pile again lead the Tiger baseball team to a game at Busch Stadium. The foreign language program sponsored trips to Europe at Easter including a trip to Russia sponsored by Mr. Joe Symanski. The drama club and director Mrs. Lea Mainer thrilled the school with the Spring production of “Bye Bye Birdie” which started students and teachers. School was on the down hill run toward prom and graduation. Perhaps the saddest moment of the school year came on Tuesday, January 28, when the United States Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff. The entire crew of seven was killed instantly. The astronauts were Francis Sco-bee, Michael Smith, Ronald McNair, Judy Resnik, Ellison Onizuka, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. Mrs. McAuliffe was to have been the first civilian in space, a teacher in space. Though she was not a teacher from our school we shared her dream, “Reach for the stars”. 14I 18Freshman class officers: Marcus Adkins, president; Jill Florini, secretary; Stephaine Rogier. treasurer; Evannah Rosse, vice presidentMarcus Adkins Christopher Ahring Mike Ahring Sheri Ammon Eric Anderson Greg Anderson Eric Arth Mike Ashauer Michele Atty Katherine Augustine Kim Bach Rich Bailey Tim Baker Erin Bardon Jeff Bares Asagay Barker Mark Bass Kerri Bauer Lisa Baugh Jim Beck Dana Behrhorst Dyann Bengston Jenny Berends Chad Bernhardt Sarah Best Kevin Betts Kim Bingham Karen Block Brad Blumenstock Cheryle Bockstruck Jay Boeck Dawn Boedecker Brian Boehm Robin Boehm Scott Boehm Brian Boston 20Paige Brase Darla Breen Robert Brickner Aleatha Brown Andy Brown David Brown Tracy Brown Lisa Buckley Stacy Budt Kelli Bullard Darrin Burgess Chris Burnett Kyle Burress Blake Burrus Rachel Byrd Dawn Caples David Cason Erin Celuch Robert Cerny Chad Champion Amanda Chandler Julie Chandler Sarah Chapman David Chasteen Vanda Chromhirun Eric Clark Martey Clark Yvette Clark Tom Clarkin Lori Clayton Becky Clayton Dianne Collins Graham Collins Jenny Conroy Dawn Coombs Judy Cooper Monika Cooper Brenda Crabtree Rennae Crabtree Eric Cremer Patrick Crockarell Amy Crook 21Tony Crow Jeff Cross Brent Davis Diane Delaney Pete Delegado Tom Detienne A. Our J.V. playing other J.V. is really like our Freshman against their J.V. Considering this fact, the team really did a good job. The team’s record was: 5-7-1. The leading scorer being sophomore, Elaine Denny. The team finished third in the terminal, which is the highest the team had ever placed. Congratulations on a successful year. Team Record 22-71985-86 Season Best Ever The Girl’s Basketball Team finished their best season in the history of the school winning 22 contests. The team advanced to the championship game of the sectional tournament before bowing out to East St. Louis Lincoln. The team was lead by the Nelson sisters, Ann and Amy, as well as Missy Schaefer and Sue Eberhart. The Tiger attack of solid long shots, consistant free throw work, rugged rebounding, and a speedy feist break powered the team past most opposion. Coaches Petty and Tissier were particularly pleased with this year’s team because it provided the second 20 victory season in a row. Many of this year’s starters were regulars last year. Also, much of the Tiger punch came from underclassmen who will return next season. 1985-86 was only one game away from Sweet Sixteen, look out for next year.FRESHMEN GIRLS BASKETBALL Bottom row: Lisa Buckley, Angie Menoni, Stacy St. Johm, Tricia Goebel, Melissa Goff, Row 2: Deanna Brase. The play was cast with students in the teenage roles and teachers in the adults roles. The concept was well received and the play was a smash playing to packed houses on all three performances. The story of “Bye Bye Birdie” is about a rock star who is about to leave for the army. He is supposed to receive a kiss from the president of his fan club while his manager and secretary arrange the details. It is obviously a screwy romantic comedy musical with about 27 musical numbers. “Birdie” was directed by Mrs. Lea Mainer, chorographed by Mrs. Chris Head, with the orchestra directed by Mr. Richard Rogers. Mr. Jim Jackson was the technical adviser and Mr. Gerald Bradley directed the singing. The lead, Albert, was played by A.J. Schnack and Kelly Lodwig played the female lead as Rosie. Stealing the show as Mrs. Peterson was school registrar, Mrs. Jenell Emrich. Birdie himself was played by Bob Murphy. Here’s a poem written by Renee Mattingly, Dobby Pile, Dana Krapf, and Julie Nilsson entitled 44 ’Twas the Night Before Graduation.” Twas the night before Graduation And all through the school Not a student was studying Senioritis was the rule. The announcements were sent Through the mail with care In hopes that the presents And cash would get there. The seniors were nestled All snug in their beds While memories of high school Danced in their heads. And Mac in her heels Ang George in his cap Had just settled down For their last midnight rap. The flashbacks arrived And some wiped a tear They were remembering scenes Of their past senior year. Away through the goalposts G. Rell kicked the ball And got the field goal record For any past fall. The gleam of the trophy Looked really great Our fantastic golfers Finished second at state! The homecoming assembly Was a memorable thing Our senior year was in full swing When ... What to our wondering eyes Should appear... eight football players In dresses, competing for cheers. With drivers in togas The float we had made Won very first prize In the homecoming parade. More anxious than eagles To the dance we all came Finally, Juleigh and AJ Called them by name. The ballots were counted To set the scene Dan and Sue has been named Our king and our queen. Because of our senate The campus is open The pavillion outside Keeps ’em dry when they're smokin’. The Christmas Dance was great For those who did go There sure seemed to be An abundance of snow. With the money we made We bought lots of toys To give as Christmas gifts To some homeless boys. The intelligence flowed On the new Jets team All those first place ribbons Were Mr. Elams dream. There’s one class every day We’d usually dread Is it so necessary To take Consumers Ed? The girl’s basketball team Brought EHS fame After they won Their regional game. Early in the spring The Art Seminar Class Led by Biff Stone Won a Six-Flags season pass. Spring break ’86 Brought a senioritis disease Especially to those Who went overseas. Our National Merit Scholars Did really well We all look up to you, Jen, Dave, and Mel. Bye Bye Birdy Sure was a great play Are some teachers now On their way to Broadway? We thank the class of ’87 For our prom — it was rad. Congratulations again To Becky and Thad. In the middle of baseball season Some did their time But is taking a towel That much of a crime? That Bomba’s home run was clutch There’s no debate We wish the Tigers luck In their quest for state. The bashing began on the 16th of May Until some got caught By McCormack — CIA. In-school was run By a dude named Don Dillow If you ever had one. You needed a pillow. EHS we will leave And our friends we will part But this isn’t the end. It is only a start. Our class is the greatest — We’re second to none Thanks to our sponsors — Rader and Pendleton. And we, as class officers. Want you to know That its all for you We put on this show. We wanted to say ’fore you get out of sight Happy Graduation to all And to all a Good Life!! From there we moved to Lucco Gymnasium for rehearsal. We were talked through rehearsal by Mr. Robert Gregor on how to dress, where to walk and to be at school the following Friday night by 7:00 p.m.! The weather was not cooperative so the commencement was moved to the gym where it was like a sauna! Though the heat was a factor, all of the graduates sat patiently to listen to valedictorian Jennifer Chen’s speech. After receiving our diploma’s in the cafeteria, we said our goodbyes and shed a few tears and smiles. We are free! 6SENIOR BREAKFAST kshm 7Prom King and Queen Candidates 1011BASEBALL The baseball team ended with a record of 22-13 and finished first in Alton Class A A regionals May 27.
