The coach shows how it’s done . Dawn Flamer winds up. 1980 All-Area Softball Team The E.H.S. Girls’ Softball team finished their 1980 season as district champs and shared the conference title with Cahokia. They were named the All-Area team by the News Democrat, and had a team record of 18 wins, 7 losses. Outstanding players were: Senior Ellen Baily; Lisa Hender- son, a senior and the team’s top pitcher; and Diane Settle, who had the highest batting average, most RBI's, and the most extra base hits (including two homeruns) Mosby and LaBlance Qualify for State The highlights of the spring track team were two Tiger members going to state. Kevin Mosby and Kenny LaBlance are looking forward to returning to state next year. Kevin Mosby had another highlight of breaking his own triple leap jump of 46'6”. The Tiger track team hosted its first county track meet in the spring of 1980 and finished in fourth place. This was the first time since 1968. Dale Oberlag and Tim Mackie advanc- ed to state competition. The team’s standing at the end of their season was 10-10. They were 6-6 in conference play. Doug Reames Is Named MVP Statistics for the 1980 Freshman baseball team are as follows: Doug Reames with 25 RBI's, Todd Redick hada batting average of .429. Their record for the season was 15-6. First Edwardsville team to win State tournament game STR Bob McManus had the highest batting average of .418. Phil Conreaux had the most RBI's with 28. Greg Steiner had the most base on balls with 25. Vince Broderick pitched for 17 victories in his career. Dan Allaria and Bob McManus were tied for the most doubles with 12. When this year’s baseball season was over, our Tigers had a record of 26 wins and 9 losses and | tie. Their conference record was 7 wins and 1 loss. Live!” “Life is a banquet...” was the philosophy of Ms. Mame Dennis in E.H.S. drama club’s production of “Auntie Mame.” The annual Fall production was done in the newly equipped E. L. Alexander Auditorium. The two act comedy heralded a cast of thirty-six members led by eccentric Margaret Weismann as Mame, Mitchell Woodard as vivacious Vera Charles, and Jim Broadway as young Patrick Dennis. Rooney White, voted outstanding offensive player, led the scoring with 5 touchdowns and 2 points after touc hdowns (PAT’S) for 32 points, wa rushed for 603 yards. MVP Bryan Hammonds returned 9 punts for 171 yards and scored 5 touchdowns Scott Nelson was named the outstanding defensive player for the Tigers. He collected 61 tackles and 36 assists throughout the 1980 season. Tiger John Dickshot was voted most improved player. Kevin Mosby led the receiving game with 11 catches, 2 of these for touchdowns, while Junior Mike Deleonardis completed 21 passes for 348 yards and 5 touchdowns. Derrick Mosley led the team with 68 assists. Derrick Mosley and Brad Thomas had the highest shooting per- centage. Both of them had 53%. The JV squad finished with an 11-7 sea- son. Tigers Finish With 17 Game Winning Streak John Wood led the team in making 79% of his free throws. Bruce Dickmann made 78% of his free throws. Paul Schaefer shot 55% from the floor. With one game left to go, Paul Schaefer led the team in scoring. Schaefer had 480 points so far this season. Dickmann had 421 points. Schaefer averaged 18.4 points a game. Brad Opel led the team with 131 assists and 80 steals. Highlights of this year’s team were beating Collinsville twice in one season, beating Madison, winning the Benton Tournament and being tied for first place in their conference. The team had 19 straight wins. The school record was 20, set in 1956. The team was the Gateway East Conference Champions for the second year in a row. At the Centralia Tourney, we finished fourth. We placed first in the Benton Tourney. Results Nineteen in a Row! EHS Musicals Revived With ‘ ‘Sound of Music” Roger’s and Hammerstein’s musical “The Sound of Music” was presented March 13 and 14 in the EHS auditorium. The Broad- way classic played to sellout au- diences both performances. The cast, led by Mitchell Woodard, was directed by Mrs. Lea Mainer with Mr. Gerry Bradley and Mr. Richard Rogers in charge of the chorus and orchestra. Other featured actors were Sue Collins, Tracy Enos, Anne Long, Steve Norris, Scot Parker, and Ann Schwarz. Go Four MAD The fourth annual MAD Circus was presented by the Music-Art- Drama departments. This year’s theme was “Broadway Musicals.”’ The variety show consisted of songs and dances from several Broadway shows from 1900 to 1980. The new team records were Gateway East Conference Co-champs Most Stolen Bases 179 Most Walks 159 Girls End Season With 8-13 The EHS Girls Softball team posted an 8 Win-13 Loss season. Many in- dividual accomplishments were recorded by the °81 team. Leading the team in batting was three time All-Metro catcher, Diane Settle with a 561 average. Settle also established a new record hitting 49 RBI's this season. Following Settle was Senior Gail Niebur with a .281 batting average with 20 RBI's and Freshman Connie Smith with a .264 average. Two team members qualified for the State meet. Mary Kay Hyten qualified for four individual events: 100 m Hurdles, 200 m Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump. Theresa Johnson had qualifying throws in the Shot Put and in the Discus. Hyten went on to cap- ture fifth in the 200 m Hurdle event. Trackmen “Move” in ’81 Once again, the EHS Track team had an outstanding season. The team led by Coach Winston Brown, had many accomplishments. Two trackmen qualified for the State meet, Kevin Mosby and Ed Lamb. Many records were set by the 1981 team. Freshman Jackie Carroll tied the High Jump record of 5 11” and Rod McMullen set a new record for the 250 Low Hurdles (33.1). Sophomore Gary White set two records: 100 m dash (11:04) and the 200 m dash (23.3). Mark Bradford broke the High Jump record at 6'4”. In the 3200 m relay a record of 8:27 was set by members Rallo, Paulsmeyer, Meikamp, and Carroll. Kevin Mosby set a new Triple Jump record at 48.3’ and assisted team members Wendall Brown, Rod McMullen, and Joey Sim to set a new school and conference record in the Triple Jump Relay. A conference record in the Long Jump relay was established by Mosby, Wendall Brown and Eric Brown.
