Lan g uages and Social Studies Barth Legate puts emphasis into his speech in speech class. Joan Engelmann, Jeanne Gieszel mann, and Dave Dietzel prepare th bulletin board in Miss McCowen' English class. Communications with others is a most important part of our life. Our English department at E.H.S. trains us to express what we feel and believe and teaches us one of the most essential parts of our American way of life-freedom of speech. In this age, modern transportation makes the world seem smaller and foreign countries seem just a few hours away. A mastery of our language is no longer sufficient; we must learn to speak the languages of others. At E.H.S. we can study Latin, Spanish, French, and German to meet this new demand. In our social studies department, we not only learn of our forefathers but also of the duties and responsibilities confronting us when we become citizens. Besides history and geography courses, E.H.S. offers psychology and sociology classes where we can learn how to live together harmoniously. Students practice the art of conve sation before school starts.

Konnie Aubrecht examines chemicals with fellow chemistry students. Today we are in a constant race with Communism. Underdeveloped countries mus: be won toward our way of life. Fighting agains: disease and illiteracy creates good will for our country, but we must also have ably trained scientists, technicians, and mathematicians to win this battle with Communism. It our classes at E.H.S., we learn the formula? and theories which are essential in the successful construction and flight of rockets. Our biology, chemistry, and physics classes are designed to prepare the scientists of tomorrow and to acquaint everyone with a useful knowledge of science. Our math classes teach us logic and give us a background for the stud} of more advanced science and mathematics, which in tomorrow's technical world will become increasingly important.
