English, Foreign Language, and Social Studies Out of high-school English classes will come the novelists, the orators, and the journalists of tomorrow. But out of these same classes must also come the engineers, the secretaries, the mechanics, and the nurses of tomorrow. English is for everyone, so everyone here at EHS studies four years of English. In a highly scientific society, cultural values are still needed, and providing for these is one of the great services of the language department. In addition to Latin, EHS offers French and Spanish, both of which can have practical applications in a world made small by rapid transportation. Understanding people, understanding events, understanding ideas—these are the objectives which the social studies department promotes. Courses in history, geography, current events, sociology, and economics are offered; and psychology, absent from the curriculum for several years, was returned this last semester. Joan Anderson addresses attentive auditors. Page 6

Sally Baird and Phyllis Tormohlen inspect the anatomy of a frog. Natural Science and Mathematics The everyday phenomena which surround us may be taken for granted by some, but not by the science student, who learns the principles that underlie the behavior of matter and of living things. Through introductory and advanced studies in the physical and biological sciences, EHS students may be prepared for some future part in the many scientific discoveries changing our world. Basic to the study of science is the study of mathematics, the “language of science.” Yet mathematics is in itself sufficiently interesting and valuable that more than one student, contrary to his original intentions, has found himself taking the full four-year mathematics program.
