English, Foreign Language, and Social Studies Out of high-school English classes will come the novelists, the orators, and the journalists of tomorrow. But out of these same classes must also come the engineers, the secretaries, the mechanics, and the nurses of tomorrow. English is for everyone, so everyone here at EHS studies four years of English. In a highly scientific society, cultural values are still needed, and providing for these is one of the great services of the language department. In addition to Latin, EHS offers French and Spanish, both of which can have practical applications in a world made small by rapid transportation. Understanding people, understanding events, understanding ideas—these are the objectives which the social studies department promotes. Courses in history, geography, current events, sociology, and economics are offered; and psychology, absent from the curriculum for several years, was returned this last semester.
