A school is onl-x us good or bud us the people uithin it. Libbey is one 01' the best schools in Toledo. This is tine ol' the reasons XtiTx xxe chose to relate our pictures and topics to the people 0!" l,ihbey High School, as well as the cowboy, which symbolizes school spirit. The student and faculty members make Libbey for what it is today. in our eyes as well as that of the community. Like the cowboy we are spirited. forever searching for new ideas and concepts. This year is more outstanding than the rest. because the people of Libbey High School have shown an interest Lind enthusiasm in their school. Lind tmxurds their fellow mun. To you. the students and titteult-x the people 0!. l,ibhey Q xte dedicate this book. The year Of the cowboy This year, a number of sig- nificant events have occured here at Libbey. Thisttsection of the Edelian is going to deal with the series of im- portant events that have taken place this year. Con- struction was undertaken for a new skills center that was made possible through a levy that was successfully passed in 1973. When completed, the skills center will benefit many stu- dents, particularly those who are job or business oriented. Everybody gets into the act during the groundbreaking ceremonies. LIBBEY GETS A NEW SKILLS Mr. Dew. Mr. Robertson, Mr. Dennis. and Mr. Norment listen intently t0 the groundbreaking speeches. . ,. . . AXHWMHVMwMMkaxx x? ..$N. Our best wishes go to Mr. Morris Brown who is in the hospital fol- lowing heart trouble. Although he is unable to finish out the rest of the school year, we sincerely hope that he recovers soon and without any complications. We all miss him very much, and we hope Lthat he will return to us next year. WHAT tWILL . You Do 73 .h zigaggw xxx wt: Here a few of our favorite photos, dug out of our old dusty flles, showing the members of the faculty, ttdoing their thing? Rather than risk a suit against the EDELIAN, HAD to include a bit of news from every section. The news from the Faculty Section, here and further on, are these'tpricelesst faculty pictures. tOh yes, we are blackmailing anyone whose pictures we still have in our files - we need the money very badlyh The Staff wmulhx ht sh L DOCUMENTARY: SHOULD CRAZY, eCHILDISHM DIFFERENT, tOR PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGNS BE ALLOWED IN LIBBEY? Should crazy, wild and chaotic promotional campaigns be carried out at Libbey High School? It seems to me that Lib- bey has such apathy that a little excitement in the form of promotion of various projects certainly cannot hurt. This year, the EDELIAN attempted to make the selling of the yearbooks a little more exciting than the usual, tlBuy a yearbook, it costs . . . blah, blah . . Fl We tried everything from stickers that said ltGrin" on them, to inventing a mascot-Super-Kiweet, who was a cross between a parakeet and a kiwi. Corny yes, but we tried everything to get the school active. For this, we were condemned because our campaigns were Tan insult to our intelligence? When the world loses its sense of humor, then we are all in a lot of trouble. Look on T.V.; read the newspapers and you will find hundreds of advertising campaigns that sound itchild- ishll but appeal to adults! The EDELIAN should not be the only group to try various forms of promotion. Clubs, if you need to raise funds, or collect memberships, use some appeal and imagination. If EVERYONE would pitch in, school, and activities would be a little more enjoyable. The "Grin" sticker that distributed throughout Libbeyi ttSuper-Kiweetll thejaded hero ofthe Edelian morning announcements. Should crazy, wild, and chaotic promotional exampaigns be, carried out at Libbey High School? I feel that although it is good to generate school spirit, it shouldnlt be done by listening to a bird dying of y overoindulgencezraktaatparty. Letls be realistic. We are not pre-Schooligor elementary children. LWe are young adults who, "are Vigoiing out intoif the world in only a few 'sh'ort'years. The majbrity Oflus- R Libbey. Ilm sure that if tldifferent promotional campaigns, were needed, then the persons responsible could certainly write an imaginative, yet appealing campaign for persons of our intelligence and age levels. I feel insulted, because to me, these ads are telling me their messagetin a ltkiddyll tone, much like you would see on lLt'Sesame Street,, or uRomper Room? I am nOt saying that promotion should go back to the drab, dull, everyday'items that you hear constantly, but these promotional campaigns should be tuned more to the needs of high school students and not to children. Therefore, I feel that advertising is great to get the message across, but when not treated properly, it gets the wrong meaning across. v - 67b IgEEEE, l IVII'Y 10 FIRST ROW: Edward Zaborski, Juan Albert, Cindy Alger, Debbie Al- maraz, Alex Alvarado, Shannah Amos, Milton Anderson, Frank Bald, Pam Baranski. When Coach Smilo came to Libbey, he never be- lieved his job would be this difficult. While coaching in Bryan, Smilo never had been accustomed to being a loser. He accepted the coaching job at Libbey three years ago and after the first year he knew what to expect. So he started rebuilding and trying to come up with a solution. He encouraged more young men to try out and became closer to the players than any coach has. During his next season his team won only one game but Coach never gave up. He said, llNext season were going to put everything together? This past year Coach Smilols team won only one game but everybody saw a different Cowboy team. Not a team which would quit when they were losing, but a team who gave the opposition "Hellll from start to Finish. Many coaches would quit but Coach Smilo isnlt a quitter. This past year he was selected COACH OF THE YEAR by City League Coaches. To be a Coach llYoulve Gotta Love It? And here at Libbey, llHe Loves It? 83 LIBBEY TEAMS ARE ON THE MOVE ,4: L . If we had gotten a few breaks along the way maybe we would have improved our record. The main stays for the freshmen ball team were: Bernard Oliver, Ken Harris, .Douglas Smith, Mark Johnson, Granvil Isom, Bobby Sawyer, Jesse Hayes, 'David Jones, Scott Baucom, Bruce Heard, Leland Ulis, Charles McLain, James Russell, Rickey Morris, and Bryant Frazier. Our first game was played against Woodward. We beat them 49-31. Our we won 46-38. Our next game was against Cardinal Stritch. We came out on top by the score of 51-34. Our. last two games were very impressive with victories over Start 151-371 and Waite 147-441. next victory come against Macomber 62-501. We traveled to Central wheret We could have done much better if some of the players had really set their minds on basketball and grades. One thing I can say for the Freshmen Basketball team is: Time and practice will make them or break them.
